Chris McCandless and Suicide His life withered away as he perched in a bus he claimed as home, he tried to thrive as a part of Alaska, but unfortunately mistakes were made. Christopher weighs only sixty-seven pounds and is confronting the fact that his life is slipping away. Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer depicted Chris as an individual with a hunger to discover all of life's true meaning. Chris voyaged to the north to discover life's meaning, but was faced with many issues along the way. This eventually led to his unfortunate death, but it was not because he killed Himself. Upon deciphering the frail state of his health McCandless knew he had to at least try and live. Unfortunately Chris was under 100 pounds and had little energy to make a trip out of Alaska so he was stuck attempting to save himself with words. The tragic note read “S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out of here. I am all alone, this is NO JOKE. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August? (Krakauer, 12)” This cry for help sets in stone the idea of Chris not committing suicide. McCandless was trying with all of his might to remain alive, if he was actually considering killing himself he would’ve given up by now.

Chris McCandless can be proven as not suicidal from the evidence presented above. Chris simply wanted to retreat from our materialistic society and travel to the Alaskan wilderness. McCandless intended to return from this journey and never expected to die. It was seen through his eyes as an adventure where he would find his true self, but hubris, a river, and more led to an unfortunate fate. A lust for adventure lead to the accidental death of “Alexander Supertramp”, he didn't take his own
