The book, A Young People’s of the History of the United States chapter 1, became an eye opener to me. I was somehow surprise to see how all my life I have portrayed Christopher Columbus as a hero. Throughout my life, my teachers have always mention the heroic part of Christopher Columbus, but neglected to mention other features about him that are not as great. For instance, the fact that he lied to the queen about being the first one to spot land and to see a lot of gold in that new land. In addition, he began exploiting Indians and using them as slaves. I feel as history is based on lies and on parts that best fit a nation/state. Although, I can understand why certain parts are omitted in elementary history books, it is still important for students to understand the full story. …show more content…
For instance, in the book Black Ants and Buddhists chapter 8, the teacher exposed the students to different stories behind Christopher Columbus. I really liked the activity she used to help the students understand the emotional aspects of the Tainos side and the Englishman. I would like to incorporate that activity in my class were the students can mimic what happened by changing the people involved such as using aliens and students playing with toys, as it will make them better understand what happened. In addition, history books from different states interpret certain events differently which will be important for students to view those different perspectives. I feel that by having the students interpret historical information based on different sources can help them form their own

Christopher Columbus: Hero Or Hero?

...To some Christopher Columbus was a brave explorer who went out to the unknown and discovered new land, new people, a new world, some may even call him a hero. To me, he's better described as a greedy, destructive being. August 1492, after thirty-three days at sea, Christopher Columbus and his crew discovered new land for Spain. What they thought was Asia, was actually the Caribbean Islands. Columbus was an explorer who tried to find a shorter route to India. He'd been trying to make this exploration happen sooner but didn't have the money. Eventually, after asking many to help him with this quest, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella finally agreed. When he discovered the “Indies” he met new people. The Taino people Columbus discovered...

Christopher Columbus: A Hero Or Hero?

...Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer, navigator, and colonizer who is well known for “discovering” North America. In reality Christopher was trying to get to China and thought he was in Japan all 4 times he went to North America. He was actually in what is now the Bahamas and Cuba. And really Christopher didn't even discover America. The Native Americans beat Columbus by thousands of years. Many people when they were younger, including myself, were taught that Columbus is a hero and an amazing person who discover the New World. We were all told that Columbus’s purpose for sailing thousands of miles across the Atlantic was to come here in search of undiscovered land. Columbus DID want land, but he was expecting to get that land from...

Christopher Columbus: A Hero Or Villain

...Most people know the name of Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus was a Portuguese sailor who sailed for Spain. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (of Spain) sponsored his voyage. Some people think Columbus is an important hero because of his many discoveries. Especially, his discovery of the Americas in 1492. Others think he was a villain because he took advantage of people. Christopher Columbus is both a villain and a hero because he took credit for other people's discoveries, he killed many innocent people, and he brought knowledge back to Spain. Most people think that Christopher Columbus discovered America. But actually 500 years before he was even born Vikings discovered America. There crew of 35 vikings was led by Leif Erickson....

Christopher Columbus: A Hero Or Villain?

...Is Christopher Columbus a hero or a villain? Based on the documents I read, the info told me that Christopher Columbus was a hero. But I personally think that he was both. He did discover land, and traded with Indians but at the same time he did kill a lot of people, and he was not very kind to everyone. The documents that i read also showed that he was a villain and a hero, but in most of the documents it stated that he was more a hero than a villain. In document 1 the info tells me that Christopher Columbus was a hero. In his diary he was a hero because he was being nice to the native American. The native Americans came up to there boat in big canoes and brought balls of cotton, parrots, and javelins to trade with them. Most people would...

Why Is Christopher Columbus A Hero

...Is Christopher Columbus A Hero Or A Villain? Christopher Columbus is a hero and a villain. Christopher Columbus is a hero because without him discovering the Dominican Republic he wouldn't have open the gateway for exploration into the new world. The gateway for exploration in the new world was great because it brought over many things that weren't native to this land. For example Cattle, Horses, Rats, Sugar, Wheat, and etc. This gateway was called the Columbian Exchange. The Columbian Exchange didn't just bring animals and food it also brought diseases such as smallpox, Influenza, Measles. These diseases almost wiped out the Native American population, but there was another reason their population diminished but we'll get into that later. Even though I don't want to admit it without Christopher Columbus the Triangular Trade might have never happened and that would've meant slaves wouldn't have been taking from Africa and brought to the United States and that means African American people...

How Is Christopher Columbus A Hero

...even now, we were always taught that Christopher Columbus was America's hero. Many people believe that, but maybe it's time to step back and look at the facts. I believe that Christopher Columbus is a villain not a hero. I'm gonna give you my insight on why I don't believe Christopher Columbus was a hero to America. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer discovering new land for the king and queen of spain. He got money from them to sail and find the water route from Asia to Europe. He accidently landed in America thinking it was a different country. He and they Indians were friendly with each other and so on so forth took America and claimed it to be his. “Half a millennium before Columbus “discovered” America, those Viking feet may have been the first European ones to ever have touched North American soil.” (http://www.history.com/). Christopher Columbus: Villain Or Hero?

...Many people believed that Christopher Columbus was a very mean and cruel man, however, some of the attributes that he portrayed was very heroic. Christopher Columbus was a very strong willed man, he did however treat his people very badly. The only reason Christopher Columbus treated his people like that is because he wanted to have success, I’m sure that we all would do anything for the amount of success that Christopher Columbus got. As his soldier Columbus got his work done, and not just done but done to the best of his ability. As one of his most valued and important soldier, I would never call him a villain, above all he was a hero. He should be respected and thought very highly of. Christopher Columbus made sure that all of his...

Christopher Columbus: A True Hero

...1. In Christopher Columbus’s extracts he is described as a hero for being the first to discover the “New Land” which to me, is very admirable. Christopher spent several years to get sponsored by the Queen of Spain to sponsor his first voyage with much hope and expectations for this journey. He set sail in 1492, finding the new land and meeting the “Indians” now known as, the Native Americans. Christopher brought a few men back from the New Land, receiving gifts such as, “balls of cotton thread…and many other things such as glass beads and hawk’s bells” (Columbus). Hopeful thinking for what else Christopher could discover with more time. Thus, becoming a true Hero. 2. Las Casas views about Christopher Columbus as a hero contradicted how Columbus...

Was Christopher Columbus A Hero?

...A hero is someone who is admired for their courage, has achieved outstanding accomplishments throughout their life or their noble qualities, such as honesty and loyalty. At an early age we were taught that Christopher Columbus was a hero, that he sailed across the Atlantic ocean and found a new world with people who were already living there. He was also considered a hero because he brought back some of the natives, and gold for the King and Queen of Spain, who sponsored his expeditions. The most prudent position for me is Columbus is not a hero, because he enslaved the natives, used violence against them, and murdered the ones who didn’t obey him. One argument that strongly supports my position on the issue of Christopher Columbus is not...

Why Is Christopher Columbus A Hero

...Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Many believe that he is a hero but in fact he isn’t. He really was an invader because he wasn’t invited. Therefore Christopher Columbus is a invader not a hero as many think. The first reason Christopher Columbus was an invader believed in slavery. Columbus and his men enslave the people of the west indies and they were subjects of violence and brutality. After enslaving them he would force them to christianity with the use of violences. And who ever left behind when Columbus leaves is forced to search for gold in mines and work on plantations. Next important reason is Columbus and his men were brutal to the natives. How Is Christopher Columbus A Hero

...What makes someone a hero? It is defined by the dictionary as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Did Christopher Columbus not utilize his courage and nobleness when traveling across the dangerous Atlantic Ocean? Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was courageous and unique, he created a bridge from the old to new world, and he provided his country with material riches. Without his exploration of North America, the world we live in today would be completely different. Columbus originally set out to find a shorter sea route to Asia. Christopher Columbus Villain Or Hero

...Christopher Columbus is one of the most controversial figures in history. While his discovery was monumentally important in the development of America as we know it, it is my belief that Columbus himself was ultimately a villain. In the process of revolutionizing the Western World, Christopher Columbus established European control of the Americas through committing unjustifiable and unforgivable atrocities. Furthermore, he committed these atrocities not with noble intentions, but rather with selfish and avaricious motives. When determining whether Christopher Columbus was a hero or villain, it is important to know his intentions in discovering and conquering America. These intentions are revealed to us through our historical knowledge of Columbus’...

Christopher Columbus: Hero Or Villain?

...Christopher Columbus: Hero or Villain? I think that Columbus day should be renamed. By having a day named after Christopher Columbus, people think that that he is a great person and he discovered the country we live in today, but that is not true because Christopher Columbus is a selfish person and only explored for his own benefit. In my opinion Columbus is a villain and we should either rename the holiday or just demolish it all together. Columbus Day celebrates the landing of Columbus at the New World. The holiday first took place in 1792 for the 300th anniversary, but it became a federal holiday in 1937. People dress up in costumes and dance to Native American music all for a very selfish man. The first piece of proof that Christopher...
