Climate Change and Its Effects on Accounting Practices

...predicted outcomes might work in the business environment. The environment affects us all and any sort of change, contingency, or preparation has to be accounted for, so this work is designed to find out how it is being done, and things that could be done to improve business. The triple bottom line The age old practice of businesses being concerned strictly with profits and how it affects shareholders is becoming a thing of the past. The short-sightedness of executives has in large part contributed to climate change and has helped erupt the business world into scandal over the past 20 years or so. The tendency to only look at quarterly profits or pressure accountants into employing “creative” practices has led to the downfall, and in some cases, the...

In general, the term Islamic banking is not only typically based on evading internet-based transactions that are strictly prohibited under the law of Shariah, but also discards any sort of unsocial or unethical practices (Ahmed, 2011). With this concern, it can be affirmed that Islamic banking is regarded as the procedure of transforming predictable money lending into transactions that are fundamentally based upon real as well as tangible services (El-Gamal, 2006). This banking system, if successfully operated, eventually results into attaining financial prosperity in the longer run (IIBI, n.d.). In earlier years, it can be apparently noted that Islamic banking has witnessed worldwide growth rate of nearly 10 to 15%, representing......

...Toy Story - analysis of the Jot case study Adrian Sims of BPP Professional Education provides some initial analysis of the pre-seen material for the TOPCIMA Part B – Case Study exams on February 28th and May 24th 2012. I’m writing this article in late December 2011 to help candidates prepare for the March and May 2012 T4 (TOPCIMA) exams based on the pre-seen material for Jot- toy case. Some previous T4 cases have lacked fun, but toys are fun. I’m sorry, but I decided to combine this article with quotes from the three Toy Story movies (Disney/Pixar). The Toy Story quotes are in italics, a bit contrived, and probably of no use for the exam. They made me smile and gave me (and you) an excuse to watch the Toy Story movies again. But my newspaper today rather kills the joyful mood. It has the headline ‘Sales boom may not save High Street big names: analysts predict failures within days’. It reports that the December sales boom has been insufficient and has left many stores with unsold stocks and unable to pay their outgoings. This has afflicted markets as diverse as camping equipment and lingerie. This brings us to the heart of the Jot pre-seen material. Jot makes toys and is part of an industry for which November and December sales are critical. It depends on retailers to sell its products, but retail in Europe is facing terrible times as a consequence of the recession caused by the sharp reductions in government spending and collapse of bank lending. It has a perilous cash flow...

Case Study

...CeeCee retail fashion case study Industry overview Over the last decade, the European clothing market has grown by almost 20% (as measured by sales revenue). However, this headline sales figure hides many of the underlying tensions involved when competing in this market sector. The clothing market has suffered from strong deflationary pressures due to the influx of `value’ retailers and intense competition. `Value’ retailers are defined as low price retailers which import low cost clothing manufactured principally in Asia. These `value’ retailers include some high street chains as well as supermarket chains that sell clothing. Generally, it is accepted that there are three tiers of clothing retailers, which are: couture houses and top designer labels high street retailers of fashion clothing `value’ retailers (as defined above) which retail at the inexpensive end of the market. There are a wide variety of retailers which compete in high street and shopping centres all over Europe (and some globally) whose prices, quality and branding varies greatly. Historically, clothing-only retailers dominated the market, taking nearly two thirds of all sales, with large department stores coming second. More recently large supermarket retailers, known principally for their grocery lines, have gained market share with a major push into non-food sales. Furthermore, in an increasingly competitive market, `value’ retailers are also growing quickly. The major force for change in the clothing......

The credibility of the profession is threatened when the ideals of integrity, independence, public service and ethical standards come under suspicion. Well-known scandals of one of the major leading accounting firms in the United States Arthur Andersen coupled with alleged unethical acts committed by Enron have arouse the conscious of the public and stakeholders as to the moral decline and unethical posture of public accountants unveiled a decline in moral reasoning and ethical standards of public accountants (Dellaportas, 2006; Esmond-Kiger, 2004).
