The theme of this book is individual-rights verses public-order, specifically; the rights guaranteed by the constitution to criminal suspects and law abiding citizens need to be upheld and defended. On the public-order side of things, the needs of communities to be protected from unlawful and/or harmful behavior must be recognized as well. These two sides have opposing groups: individual-rights advocates and public-order advocates. Individual-rights advocates focus on just that. They make sure the rights of citizens and suspects are both upheld (like the right to a speedy trial and bail). Public-order advocates are there to make sure that the public (communities) are also protected from unacceptable behavior... Describe the American experience with crime during the last half century. What noteworthy criminal incidents or activities can you identify during that time, and what social and economic conditions might have produced them?
The American experience with crime during the last half century has been especially influential in shaping the criminal justice system of today. Although crime waves have come and gone, some events during the past century stand out as especially significant, including a spurt of widespread organized criminal activity associated with the Prohibition years of the early twentieth century; the substantial increase in “traditional” crimes during the 1960s and 1970s; the threat to the American way of life represented by illicit drugs around the same time; and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (Dworkin, 2005).,
The American experience with crime during the last half century has been the main reason for the way our courts, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system operates the way that it does today. There have been many crime waves and other events that have played a key role in shaping the system as it is today. Some of…...

...Leroy Thomas HIS 211 Topic A Jimmy Hampton June 2, 2014 Jonathan Edwards evoked vivid, terrifying images of the utter corruption of human nature and the terrors awaiting the unrepentant in hell. Jonathan Edwards’s famous description of the sinner as a loathsome spider suspended by a slender thread over a pit of seething brimstone in his best known sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”(1741) The First Great Awakening also gained impetus from the wide-ranging American travels of an English preacher, George Whitefield. Although Whitefield had been ordained as a minister in the Church of England, he later allied with other Anglican clergymen who shared his evangelical bent, most notably John and Charles Wesley. Together they led a movement to reform the Church of England (much as the Puritans had attempted earlier to reform that church) which resulted in the founding of the Methodist Church late in the eighteenth century. During his several trips across the Atlantic after 1739, Whitefield preached everywhere in the American colonies, often drawing audiences so large that he was obliged to preach outdoors. What Whitefield preached was nothing more than what other Calvinists had been proclaiming for centuries that sinful men and women were totally dependent for salvation on the mercy of a pure, all-powerful God. But Whitefield and many American preachers who eagerly imitated his style presented that message in novel ways. Gesturing dramatically, sometimes......

Do you agree or disagree? Why? Although either answer is acceptable, the question of data usage versus customer privacy has generated impassioned discussions by students. On the one hand, the frequent shopper cards can provide a plethora of data about the shopping habits of particular consumers, potentially allowing stores to achieve customized marketing for individual customers. At the same time, frequent shopper cards could violate customer privacy in the sense that certain customers might be uncomfortable that stores have access to such detailed data about them, particularly if the data includes frequent purchases of potentially “embarrassing” products (e.g., laxatives). 13.  Discuss the best of breed and single integrator approaches. ...innate or just part of general cognition? The specific way that we acquire language is a contentious debate in the field of linguistics. Some researchers believe that humans are born with an innate, specialized mental module which facilitates the acquisition of language in young children. Other researchers believe that language acquisition occurs through general cognitive capabilities that are not necessarily language-specific. For this topic, you may either a) Choose a position in this debate and defend your position, or b) based on your research into these two sides, discuss what type of argument or evidence would be required to settle this debate in favour of either side. Whichever approach you choose, make sure to focus on specific types of evidence, whether they are phonological, syntactic, or otherwise, and how that evidence bears on the larger question. ...a way of approaching a task, taking into consideration the unique needs of each group member and their contributions to the group work. The CLC exercises in this course are designed to give you a better understanding of collaborative and interpersonal skills need to work with others successfully. Your grade for each CLC assignment is based partly on the quality of the work submitted and partly on the demonstration of group dynamic and “group think.” * How the CLC Works The instructor will assign students to teams during Topic 1 in preparation for the CLC assignment that is due in Topic 3. Each team will be assigned a color code. Your team will use the CLC forum, located in the Discussion Forum folder, to communicate with each other while working on the assignment. Chapter One Topic Questions

...CHAPTER ONE TOPIC QUESTIONS 1. What are the three components of the C.I.A. triangle? What are they used for? The three components of the C.I.A. are: confidentiality (assurance that the information is shared only among authorized persons or organizations); integrity (assurance that the information is complete and uncorrupted); and availability (assurance that the information systems and the necessary data are available for use when they are needed). These three components are frequently used to conveniently articulate the objectives of a security program that must be used in harmony to assure an information system is secure and usable. 2. If the C.I.A. triangle is incomplete, why is it so commonly used in security? The CIA triangle is commonly used in security because it addresses the fundamental concerns of information: confidentiality, integrity and availability. It is still used when not complete because it addresses all of the major concerns with the vulnerability of information systems. 3. Describe the critical characteristics of information. How are they used in the study of computer security? Availability - enables users who need to access information to do so without interference or obstruction and in the required format. The information is said to be available to an authorized user when and where needed and in the correct format. Accuracy- free from mistake or error and having the value that the end-user expects. Cjs/221 Week 1

...Crime is predominantly an intra-racial event involving victims and offenders of the same race. Group discussion, Week 1, CJS/221 2/29/2016 Beaux David Lee During a quiet evening at home with friends, I put out the question of crime and race. Race is not unnoticed in my group as I am part of an inter-racial couple, my wife being black and myself white. We talk about race issues daily, and it is an open dialog with friends and family. The topic of crime is also talked about since we both are in Criminal justice programs but in two different colleges. The feeling that crime is mostly same race has to do opportunity, as we all agree. We as humans live in our comfort zones, with familiarity. Violent crimes tend to be done to people we personally know. This would convey the issue of same race. It is universal on the thought that violent acts are done within a community and familiarity in that community. This is also believed to be why crime is steady in the same race. Hispanics and blacks have harder times getting jobs, and thus cause friction. The feeling of neglect and loathsome can cause a desperate need and thinking. The fact that the lower class can’t afford lawyers and often use the public defenders mean they accept the fact they will not get out free or easily. We as a human look onto our own race as a safety, for example, a black woman would not worry as much seeing a black male coming into a store. She wouldn’t think twice about talking with him or......

...Topic 1: What career would you like to choose after leaving school Model answer: Today, it is not easy to choose a career. Hundreds of students pass various examinations every year and compete with one another for positions in the various professions which are not so many as there are applicants. I would, however, like to choose teaching as my career. Teaching is an interesting career for several reasons. As a teacher I can learn many things, especially if I teach to an udder-secondary school. If I teach History or English, for example, I have to read many books to make my teaching lessons more interesting to my pupils. Thus, I can acquire more knowledge of the subjects that I teach than what I can learn from the class text books. It is indeed a fact that a teacher learns a lot from the class text books; but that is hardly enough to make the teacher's lessons interesting to pupils. A good teacher must therefore read many other books. Again, as a teacher, I have to speak well so that my pupils will be able to understand my instructions well. In this way I can improve my powers of expression. Even my pronunciation of words will improve to great extent. Further, as a teacher, I shall have enough leisure to read and prepare for various examinations. It is possible today to sit for many important examinations by studying entirely at home. Thus, I can acquire important qualifications. Finally, as a teacher I will be respected as an educated person. People will......

Topic 1: Discussion Question 2

...Topic 1: Discussion Question 2 I reminisce to the excitement of the first day of school as I begin the next chapter of my educational journey. The sweet feeling of unknown, the butterflies in the stomach bring about childhood memories. I am looking forward to expanding my knowledge, the joy of overcoming the challenges and most importantly, earning my BSN. I have my goals set clearly before me and my motivation is strong. I know I can overcome my fear of failure as I have done in the past. My fears almost caused me to give up during my LPN to RN bridge program. I felt overwhelmed and lost confidence in myself. Thankfully I had a strong support system. I was able to refocus on my goals, prioritize and utilize my resources to overcome my fears of failure and succeed. With hard work and determination I regained my confidence and drive to become a professional and a scholar. From that point there was no turning back. I have too much at stake to allow self-doubt to interfere with my goals. Although I encountered a setback during my bridge program I was able to complete it and earn my associate degree. I am glad I had that experience. It made me more confident in myself and more aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a student. I think it is naïve for a person to believe they will never fail. That mid set handicaps a student’s mind. I feel that knowing and accepting one’s fears is the best way to not fall into their depths. References: Lake, A., & von Baeyer, C.......
