Week Eight Assignment: Community and Problem-Solving Policing

Community and Problem-Solving Policing

Shawn Morris

Axia College

There are three main topics of policing that we have among us today which are Community policing, problem-solving policing and federal government’s integration into community policing that all work together as one to keep our streets safe and secure. In recent years, the philosophy of community-oriented policing has gained a significant position in American law enforcement procedures (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1999). This process has come to be known as the problem-solving process of policing. These problem-solving strategies focus on crime generators and hot spots that plague law enforcement agencies in the United States (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1999). There are many ways to reduce these hot spots with community programs in policing. This could include neighborhood watch groups and local business owners to control the rate of crime in the community. This increases surveillance within the community and cuts down on the number of police in these areas. The citizens in these communities and local business owners can report the findings to the local police for further investigation. Why focus on hot spots? Residential locations can generate as much as 85 percent of the repeat calls for service. Moreover, research indicates that in many communities, more than 50 percent of the calls for service come from only 10 percent of the locations Identifying these hot spots through crime analysis and crime-specific planning can lower the level and the fear of crime (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1999). With these hot spots out of the way, than your local law enforcement officers can focus more on other high crime ridden areas within a town or city.
Community policing is, in essence, collaboration between the police

Legal History

...Bombay High Court 1 1862 - 2012 A Journey of 150 Years through some Memorable Judgments Part 1 2 PREFACE A tiny kernel of an idea planted by Justice Mridula Bhatkar took root, and has resulted in a humble effort to present before you a compendium of the crux of some of the judgments of the Judges who have served the Bombay High Court since its inception in 1862.1 The initial idea was to document one judgment of the First Court from each year which was modified to include a judgment of the Bombay High Court of each year. I soon realized that it was too expansive an idea to merit a single judgment a year. I could collect and collate, as many as ten judgments which would qualify to show the development of the law we desired to portray. Having found too vast a number of such judgments, I had to settle at a more reasonable figure of about five judgments each year to showcase the progress this Court has made from its illustrious beginnings. Our Chief Justice Mohit Shah and our Justice Chandrachud wholeheartedly supported the idea to complement the Book published on this the sesquicentennial of our Court. As the number of Judges grew, fewer judgments of each Judge would be selected as illustrations. These judgments are not the only path-finding groundbreaking ones; they are also ones with simplicity and legal elegance. The number of judgments we settled upon just would not permit all deserving judgments to be compiled; only a few have been picked from each year as the first in...

Business Communication Law

...Law and its application for settlement of disputes (highlights on ADR) Lecture |Largely ADR | |Two categories | Informal & indigenous mode of ADR formal or court-annexed ADR (As old as the society itself) (Since the decades of 17th in USA) USA-since 1970s, public talk- against civil justice system because of excessive delay, expense, inflexibility and technicality In a speech in 1976, Warren Burger (CJ) of USA discussed with the problem of delay, high costs unnecessarily expenses and diminish the velue of the judgment. CJ made several suggestions –reform, including giving a greater role to ADR. He urged for “divert litigation to other channels”, particularly the channel of Arbitration. ‘Multi-door Courthouse’ Burger Harvard (law professor) Frank E.A Sander proposed that court be transformed into “dispute resolution centers”, in which ‘the grievance would first be channeled through a screening clerk who would then direct him to the process most appropriate to his types of cases. The ‘dispute resolution centers’ would have a separate room for screening, mediation, arbitration, fact finding, malpractice, a civil court and an ombudsman. ADR history in Bangladesh (To be traced two different view points) 1. History of informal (shalish) and quasi-formal (village court) ADR: Informal ADR is as old as the society itself. Shalish is a non-state justice system and a reformed version of shalish is being...

Child Depression

...Risk and Protective Factors for Depression: Implications for Prevention Depression in Children and Adolescents Linking Risk Research and Prevention Judy Garber, PhD Abstract: The National Institute of Mental Health has called for translational research linking basic knowledge about vulnerabilities that underlie mood disorders to the development of effective preventive interventions. This paper highlights research about risk factors for depression in children and adolescents and links it to current knowledge about interventions aimed at preventing depression in youth. Basic epidemiologic and clinical research indicates that increased risk for depression is associated with being female; a family history of depression, particularly in a parent; subclinical depressive symptoms; anxiety; stressful life events; neurobiological dysregulation; temperament/personality (e.g., neuroticism); negative cognitions; problems in self-regulation and coping; and interpersonal dysfunction. These vulnerabilities both increase individuals’ chances of encountering stress and decrease their ability to deal with the stress once it occurs. Although several existing depression-prevention studies have targeted one or more of these risk factors, the efficacy of these various prevention programs for youth with different combinations of these risk factors needs to be investigated further. Most existing depression-prevention programs in youth have used cognitive– behavioral techniques, with some success...

With the sincere hope and plea that some findings and thoughts of this dissertation will contribute to reducing tuberculosis and poverty. “The appalling global burden of tuberculosis at the turn of the millennium, despite the availability of effective control measures, is a blot on the conscience of humankind. For developing countries, the situation has become desperate and the "cursed duet" of tuberculosis and AIDS is having a devastating impact on large sections of the global community. The investigation was conducted from both a theoretical and an empirical point of view. The contribution of the same industry to the world economy is considerable. Many countries are now dependent on this sector for foreign currency earnings. Every destination country is trying to achieve more gain by developing this industry. The expansion of the tourism through out the world has increased competition among the tourist destinations, trying to attract more tourists by adopting appropriate marketing techniques and strategies. Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple

...Preface A well-developed knowledge of clinical microbiology is critical for the practicing physician in any medical field. Bacteria, viruses, and protozoans have no respect for the distinction between ophthalmology, pediatrics, trauma surgery, or geriatric medicine. As a physician you will be faced daily with the concepts of microbial disease and antimicrobial therapy. Microbiology is one of the few courses where much of the "minutia" is regularly used by the practicing physician. This book attempts to facilitate the learning of microbiology by presenting the information in a clear and entertaining manner brimming with memory aids. Our approach has been to: 4) Create a conceptual, organized approach to the organisms studied so the student relies less on memory and more on logical pathophysiology. The text has been updated to include current information on rapidly developing topics, such as HIV and AIDS (vaccine efforts and all the new anti-HIV medications), Ebola virus, Hantavirus, E. coli outbreaks, Mad Cow Disease, and brand-new antimicrobial antibiotics. The mnemonics and cartoons in this book do not intend disrespect for any particular patient population or racial or ethnic group but are solely presented as memory devices to assist in the learning of a complex and important medical subject. We welcome suggestions for future editions. 1) Write in a conversational style for rapid assimilation. 2) Include numerous figures serving as "visual memory tools" and summary charts...
