Statistics

...Statistics Marlies Parent CJS/240 August 02, 2013 University of Phoenix Statistics The Uniform Crime Report or UCR is a crime reporting program that was created in “1929 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police” to form a consistent statistic for the entire nation, by the nation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation started to run the Uniform Crime Report in 1930 by gathering, publishing, and archiving the statistics (N/A, N/A). Information from many law enforcement agencies is collected, for other law enforcement agencies to access these types of statistics. The UCR collects statistics on violent crimes like aggravated assault, forcible rape, robbery, and murder, as well as property crimes like motor-vehicle theft, burglary, and larceny-theft; all these offenses are considered Part 1 offenses, which also include arson, but there are no statistics available in the UCR for these offenses. Part 2 offenses include other assault or simple assault, forgery, fraud, stolen property, embezzlement, vandalism, drug violations, prostitution, sex offenses, weapons, gambling, offenses against family and children, DUI, liquor laws, drunkenness, disorderly conduct, vagrancy, suspicion, curfew and loitering laws, runaways, and all other offenses not covered by part 1 and part 2 offenses, this however excludes traffic violations (N/A, Department of Justice; Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2004). Since the data in the Uniform Crime Report is expressed as raw figures,......

...Bombay High Court 1 1862 - 2012 A Journey of 150 Years through some Memorable Judgments Part 1 2 PREFACE A tiny kernel of an idea planted by Justice Mridula Bhatkar took root, and has resulted in a humble effort to present before you a compendium of the crux of some of the judgments of the Judges who have served the Bombay High Court since its inception in 1862.1 The initial idea was to document one judgment of the First Court from each year which was modified to include a judgment of the Bombay High Court of each year. I soon realized that it was too expansive an idea to merit a single judgment a year. I could collect and collate, as many as ten judgments which would qualify to show the development of the law we desired to portray. Having found too vast a number of such judgments, I had to settle at a more reasonable figure of about five judgments each year to showcase the progress this Court has made from its illustrious beginnings. Our Chief Justice Mohit Shah and our Justice Chandrachud wholeheartedly supported the idea to complement the Book published on this the sesquicentennial of our Court. As the number of Judges grew, fewer judgments of each Judge would be selected as illustrations. These judgments are not the only path-finding groundbreaking ones; they are also ones with simplicity and legal elegance. The number of judgments we settled upon just would not permit all deserving judgments to be compiled; only a few have been picked from each year as the first......

The trend towards complexity has increased the risk associated with business decisions, making it more important to have a sound information base. To do well in such an environment, one will need to understand how to identify quality information and recognize the solid, reliable research on which one‟s high-risk decisions as a manager can be based. One also needs to know how to analyze the research findings. The study of quantitative techniques provides one with the knowledge and skills needed to solve the problems and the challenges of a fast-paced decisionmaking environment. Managers make decisions on a day to day basis and it is necessary for them to be able to analyze the data so as to be able to make optimal decisions. This module has ten lesson which cover matrix algebra, markov analysis, Linear programming, differentiation, applications of differentiation to cost, revenue and profit functions, integral calculus, inventory models, sampling and estimation theory, hypothesis testing and chi-square tests. iii MODULE OBJECTIVES By the end......

...A Library of Local Search Heuristics for the Vehicle Routing Problem Chris Gro¨r1 e Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 1 Bethel Valley Rd, Oak Ridge, TN 37831 cgroer@gmail.com Bruce Golden R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA, bgolden@rhsmith.umd.edu Edward Wasil2 Kogod School of Business, American University, Washington, DC 20016, USA, ewasil@american.edu The vehicle routing problem (VRP) is a difficult and well-studied combinatorial optimization problem. Real-world instances of the VRP can contain hundreds and even thousands of customer locations and can involve many complicating constraints, necessitating the use of heuristic methods. We present a software library of local search heuristics that allow one to quickly generate solutions to VRP instances. The code has a logical, object-oriented design and uses efficient data structures to store and modify solutions. The core of the library is the implementation of seven local search operators that share a similar interface and are designed to be extended to handle additional options with minimal code change. The code is well-documented, straightforward to compile, and is freely available online. The code contains several applications that can be used to generate solutions to the capacitated VRP. Computational results indicate that these applications are able to generate solutions that are within about one percent of the best-known solution on benchmark problems. Key words: vehicle......

First Course in Probability by Ross

...A Solution Manual for: A First Course In Probability: Seventh Edition by Sheldon M. Ross. John L. Weatherwax∗ September 4, 2007 Introduction Acknowledgements Special thanks to Vincent Frost and Andrew Jones for helping find and correct various typos in these solutions. Miscellaneous Problems The Crazy Passenger Problem The following is known as the “crazy passenger problem” and is stated as follows. A line of 100 airline passengers is waiting to board the plane. They each hold a ticket to one of the 100 seats on that flight. (For convenience, let’s say that the k-th passenger in line has a ticket for the seat number k.) Unfortunately, the first person in line is crazy, and will ignore the seat number on their ticket, picking a random seat to occupy. All the other passengers are quite normal, and will go to their proper seat unless it is already occupied. If it is occupied, they will then find a free seat to sit in, at random. What is the probability that the last (100th) person to board the plane will sit in their proper seat (#100)? If one tries to solve this problem with conditional probability it becomes very difficult. We begin by considering the following cases if the first passenger sits in seat number 1, then all ∗ wax@alum.mit.edu 1 the remaining passengers will be in their correct seats and certainly the #100’th will also. If he sits in the last seat #100, then certainly the last passenger cannot sit there (in fact he will end up in seat #1). If he sits in any of the......
