The City That Became Safe
Over the last ten years the United States has experienced a dramatic decrease in crime since the early 1990’s. New York, has maintained their remarkable drop in crime over the last twenty years in comparison. So it is only logical that criminologist would want to study this phenomenon to get to the root of its success. In “ The City That Became Safe” Zimring decides to go beyond New York’s surface success and find the causes in these decreases. Through his analysis of the New York’s constant decline in Zimring says: “We now know that life-threatening crime is not an incurable urban disease in the United States.” He takes the stance that improved policing strategies and systems explain New York’s constant decreasing in various area’s of crime. Dr. Zimring will further assert his stance through finding the causes of the decline and explain what else can be learned though criminological theories and crime control policy.
As previously According to Zimring, New York’s decrease in serious crime is unprecedented among America’s biggest cities. In the 1990s the entire country experienced the largest documented crime decline of the twentieth century, in which the typical big city experienced approximately 35 to 40% reductions in felonies. But in most urban areas the downward trend ended around the year 2000. In contrast, Zimring notes that New York’s decline has so far lasted twice as long, and the average felony rate drop has been twice as large. The city’s felony rates have plunged by an average of about 80%, and they have continued to stay at that low level or to decrease even further in the post-2000 period.
Before proceeding further, it should be noted that criminologists John Eterno and Eli Silverman have raised troubling questions about possible data manipulation within the New York City Police Department...

Even though crimes may be handled somewhat differently depending on your geographical location they all face the same battle. This battle is ever going and leaves law enforcement asking how do I stop this crime from happening again? Like most problem they begin as acute, but eventually turn into something much bigger and become ongoing. The juvenile court system has been developed to handle crimes within juveniles and develop a system to help combat crimes from its lowest and earliest stage. Juvenile crime rate is on the rise and more and more violent crimes are happening daily within juvenile’s Society today is shaping children and young adults into accepting violence as the “norm” and is allowing children to think it is acceptable to commit these crimes daily. Recently the “knock out” game swept across the country. These was a “game” played by young adults and juveniles where they targeted defenseless individuals walking the streets and would sneak up on them and strike them in the face. The goal of this so-called “game” was to knock the person unconscious with one strike to the head or face area. This alone tells me that there is a problem with violence among young adults today. Crimes like this happen daily and the popularity of violent......

Research Process and Terminology Paper

...Research Process and Terminology Paper Tomanika Nicholson December 12, 2012 CJA/334 Christopher Franks Research Process and Terminology Paper Introduction This essay will discuss four main topics, which are terminology I learned for the reading, how will the terminology and knowledge apply to a career in criminal justice, how can the knowing proper terminology affect me as I conduct criminal justice research and how will knowing these terms be an asset to me when evaluating and analyzing research studies. Terminology I learned from reading I will include terms for chapter one and chapter two. I will define what the terms I learned mean and how I perceived them. I will define the terms that I learned from chapter one first. There were many terms that was new to me that I have never heard before, however, I will only define three terms form chapter one. My belief of this meaning is that something takes place out of the human control such as ghost or the supernatural. The second word is “Scientism,” which means, the belief that the assumptions, methods of research, of the physical and biological sciences are equally appropriate and essential to all other disciplines, including the humanities and the social sciences (dictionary.reference, 2012).
