Final Project: Fiction versus Reality
CJS/220
May 7, 2011
Timothy Hanson

There are many aspects of a working courtroom, and each aspect has a special value that it adds to justice proceedings. However, the courtroom proceedings seen in movies, or on television, are rarely the same as what. The reality of what happens in a courtroom has been completely sensationalized to make it more exciting. The complexity of what takes place in real life courtrooms has remained consistent throughout the years. Looking at the novelty of fictional drama and comparing that to what takes place in a traditional courtroom will show the differences, if any. Take into consideration the movie, “My Cousin Vinny.” This movie is mostly held in a courtroom. Included are the judge, the prosecution and defense attorneys, the jury, the bailiff, court recorder, witnesses, even an audience included in the scenes and processes of the case. While in a completely fictional movie, the roles and actions of each individual seem to be indicative of reality. Keeping in mind that there has been a major amount of comedic properties added to the characters of the movie to make it more entertaining, the true roles of the characters stayed very true to reality. The defense and prosecuting attorneys exchange information during discovery, and interviewing witnesses. Also involved, are the examinations and cross examinations done by the attorneys are very comparable to reality. Then there is the court reporter, the bailiff, the jury, and even the witnesses. All of these characters portrayed in the movie, acted just the same way that reality shows. The bailiff was responsible for maintaining order in the courtroom, swearing in the witnesses, and handing information from the attorneys to the judge. This is the same in reality. The court reporter took down the proceedings on the recording...

Key Social Issues

...Regina Woodford CJ 100: Preparing for a Career in Public Safety January 29, 2014 The three key social issues that contribute to the need for criminal justice practitioners are sex offenders, drug abuse, and gun control. The first key social issue is sex offenders. Sex offenders are required by state law to register in the system and allows the public to know where they live and what offense was made (Perlam 2006.). A sex offender is an adult, or child having consensual or nonconsensual sex with a minor. Having a sex offender in your neighborhood can prove not to be a good thing for schools or homes because of the children. When individuals register as they are supposed to, it allows people in the community to be aware of them. The second key social issue is drug abuse. This issue requires a need for criminal justice practitioner in for different reasons. Drug abuse is a social and physical problem. The physical problem is the pain that a person inflicts upon themselves intentionally and unintentionally while high. Drug abuse can lead to life threatening addictions and can also kill a person. Therefore, it contributes for a need of a criminal justice practitioner; the CJ practitioner can promote a lack of narcotics to prevent individuals from spending the rest of their lives jail. When a person abuses drugs, they do not see their problem as an issue. A criminal justice practitioner role would be to help drug abusers by, sending them to rehabilitation centers or locking...

Behavior Theory

...Troy Margoni Final Project NMU CJ 530 Behavior Theory December 9, 2013 Introduction Behavior theory is a theory that identifies the behaviors distinguishing leaders who achieve desired results (Ortmeier & Davis 2006). Behavior theorists suggest that cicumstances can cause an individual to take a leadership role. Scholars also add that those who engage in behaviors are likley to achieve desired results. Those who study the behavior theory approach to leadership focus on two general types of behaviors. The first being task behaviors which facilitate goal accomplishment. An example a command officer directs a line officer to secure a crime scene. The other behavior is relationship behavior. Relationship behaviors help others develop comfortable feelings about themselves, other people, and the situation. For example, the command officer consults with the line officer about the best way to secure the crime scene (Ortmeier & Davis 2006). I beleive that leadership skills are learned through time and it is not something that you are just born with much like Childers believes and behavior theory. Many people will argue that trait theory is the best way to define leadership i disagree. Refreneces: Agolla, J.
