Homeless in Not Helpless

...HOMELESS IS NOT HOPELESS A Study of the Homeless Population of Santa Clarita BY RICHARD SJOLIN EG 371 RESEARCH METHODS It is unacceptable that in our society we cannot provide basic needs for the homeless community within our population.  My study of the homeless population provides information on the demographics of the homeless population, specifically in the Santa Clarita Valley. I wanted to look at this question; if semi-permanent housing services were free, would the population take advantage of those services? As a secondary question, can a homeless person make sufficient income to sustain permanent housing without assistance? Both of these areas are critical to a successful transition back into a productive lifestyle for the homeless family. In the future I would like to survey the guests of the Santa Clarita Emergency Winter Shelter, when it is open. I also believe it would be beneficial to repeat this survey, as conducted, at four different times, during different seasons throughout the year. I think that while the overall results would be similar, we could reach a greater number of the homeless and therefore provide even more powerful support for the needed assistance. In announcing a grant to assist the education needs of homeless children, the William Hart School District stated that in the 2008 – 2009 school year there were over 850 homeless children in grades seven through twelve. (Board, 2009). These children......

Goldilocks History

...Goldilocks was first opened in 1966 as a family business and started in a one-door apartment of a two-story structure on Pasong Tamo Street, Makati City. It has established 192 branches throughout the islands. Two young women, sisters Milagros Leelin Yee and Clarita Leelin Go, now affectionately known by everyone else in the business as "The Two Moms", started the original Filipino Goldilocks, buoyed by the compliments they received on their home baking, particularly the fabulous cakes they took to their friends and relatives on every occasion. Along with their sister-in-law, Doris, started this team long before there was a bakeshop. They decided to open a small bakeshop along to the Pasong Tamo Street, Makati. The sisters have already been dabbling in the business for some time ---Milagros, by supplying chiffon slices to a number of Manila’s canteens, and Clarita, by baking and decorating cakes during special occasions in Bicol --- when they decided to take their hobby one step further. They began in the family kitchen, with their family as their first "customer." And when they decided to open a full-fledged bakeshop, another sister suggested the name Goldilocks. The fairy tale character, they agreed, seemed to suggest luck. On the first day of operation, all Goldilocks products were sold out. It had a little to do with luck, of course, Goldilocks' brazo de mercedes, sansrival, marble and butter slices, among other bestseller goodies, were sold just as fast they could bake...

Drag Racing Called Possible Factor in 'Fast & Furious' Actor Paul Walker's Death

...Santa Clarita, California (CNN) -- Drag racing may have been involved in the fiery crash that killed "Fast & Furious" actor Paul Walker on Saturday, an investigator said Monday. Investigators got a phone call tip Sunday suggesting that another car was at the scene when the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, driven by Walker's racing team partner, slammed into a light pole and burst into flames, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Richard Cohen told CNN. "Naturally, from an investigative standpoint, we need to find out if that is one of the issues," he said. Even if drag racing was not involved, investigators are looking at the possibility that another car veered in front of the Porsche and caused the crash, Cohen said. Actor Paul Walker dies Actor Paul Walker dies Witness: Walker was not drag racing View scene of Walker's deadly car crash Jim Torp, a car enthusiast who was at the charity event that Walker attended before the wreck, said he doubted drag racing was involved. Walker was smiling as he got into the Porsche minutes earlier. Torp thought he heard a blast in the distance before the car slammed into a light pole, he said. "What the first explosion was, I don't know if their tire blew up, because it sounded like a tire blew on the car," Torp told CNN Monday. Tire skid marks on the asphalt near the crash site, which indicate a car was doing doughnut spins, also are being looked at, Cohen said. It has not been concluded that they are related to the Walker......

In not that long time, Lourdes found out that the ring was pledged to Dizon’s pawnshop after 3days from the date of transaction made. Actually the one who pledged it without notice to owner was her husband’s niece named Melia Sison for P2600 with Clarita. Suntay filed a case for estafa(fraud) case and Suntay asked Dizon to return the ring but Dizon refused, so Suntay presents the file against to Dizon. ...middle school. During my 6th grade year my grandparents were unable to care for me anymore so I went to stay with my best friend and her family. It was hard living with friends but for the first time in a long time I felt like part of a real family. I ended up living with my friend and her family for about two years. Things were great until her grandfather became very ill and was not going to make it through. He passed away and I was told because of the death that I would not be able to stay with them. So my only choice was to call my mother. By this time I was in the 7th grade and my mother and step father decided that they wanted to move out of the state to Texas. For once they did not mind if I went. So we all moved from Santa Clarita to Galt; which is a small town just South of Sacramento. Things were going good after we got there and for once in a long time I was with one of my parents. I continued to live with my mom through high school. In the 11th grade I found out that I was pregnant with my now 3 year old daughter. I knew right then and there that I would make sure that my child would always have me in her life and that I would try my best to provide for her. I do not hold my childhood against my parents and know that because of my past I am the mother I am today. Now I am 20 years old with a supporting boyfriend and a daughter that is my world. I did not let my past haunt me. I turned a bad memory into the best life I could for my child and I could not...

The survey asks parents the following questions: * “What language did this student learn when first beginning to talk?” (Peterson Henry, 2014, p. 1) * “What language do you use most frequently to speak to this student?” (Peterson Henry, 2014, p. 1) * “What language does this student most frequently use at home?” (Peterson Henry, 2014, p. 1) * “What language is most often spoken by the adults at home?” (Peterson Henry, 2014, p. 1) If the parent indicates that the student speaks a language other than English or if the parent indicates that the language spoken at home is not English, the student is labeled English Language Learner (ELL). Thereafter, at GVHS the student is given the California English language development test (CELDT) and a placement test in English and Math (Peterson Henry, 2014, p.1). The result of this test will determine if the student is an “English learner” or “fluent in English proficiency (FEP)” (Peterson Henry, 2014, p.1). Goldilocks Bakeshop, Inc.

...Once upon a time in 1966, two sisters, Milagros and Clarita and their sister-in-law Doris, decided to open a small bakeshop along Pasong Tamo Street in Makati. A third sister, Maria Flor, suggested that they name the enterprise “Goldilocks“, after the character in a fairy tale. The intention was to make it easier for children and their mothers to remember the bakeshop’s name, and also because it suggested luck and prosperity. Little did the founders know that this “Once Upon a Time” would flourish into a real-life “Happily Ever After”: through hard work, dedication, and an uncompromising commitment to total customer satisfaction, Goldilocks is now the largest Filipino-owned bakeshop chain in the world. Being the leading Quick Service Restaurant in the Filipino Food Category as well, the company has expanded to more than 350 stores in the Philippines, with nine manufacturing plants strategically located across the country. Consequently, the opening day total sales of P574 back in 1966 has multiplied thousands of times over, reaching system-wide sales of over P6 billion as of latest financial records. Perhaps more impressively, generations of Filipinos consider Goldilocks not only as a brand, but a time-honored family tradition. Now approaching its 50th year, Goldilocks continues to strengthen its position as a genuine Filipino Icon. Indeed, with each product you buy, you are not merely getting a delicious slice of cake or a scrumptious dish – you get a taste of something...
