...FIELD REPORT: Observing Electronic Devices Usage in Class and Discussing Whether College Teachers Should Allow Students Use Laptops In Class By Bingqian Zhou Reporting Period: Autumn 2012, October 9–16 Abstract As technology become more advanced and widespread, people are able to purchase various personal electronic devices at a lower cost. It also leads to the trend that more and more students bring their personal electronic devices to class. I observed the use of electronic devices in three different courses, and I also interviewed two instructors with unique teaching styles and asked them their opinions about whether should allow their students use laptops during lectures. The reason I did this report is that I have seen many students bring their laptops to class for different purposes, and also realized that college teachers have different policies on the use of personal electronic devices. I observed student’s behavior in several classes, 70% of the students brought electronic devices to class, which only 20% of them actually used them for class related work. I also interviewed two instructors about their attitude of using laptops during class. One of them believed that it was helpful and convenient for students take notes on the computer and follow up with course materials. The other teacher argued that it was distractive to others if some students use their laptops to do non-class activities and was also disrespectful to the instructor. The conclusion of this report...

...How did the group benchmark assignment relate to your observation assignment? The benchmark assignment was really beneficial as I went into the classroom because I was able to see those things in action and notice what the teacher was doing that was good at this specific age group. It helped me to pay attention to things that were beneficial and things that might need to be altered a little bit to be more conducive to the kindergarteners. How did the BYU Preschool or Kindergarten observation help you write the PowerPoint? I loved doing the observation because it gave me ideas of things we could do to implement the benchmarks and Utah state learning objectives in the classroom. It helped me to notice what would be good to use and things that would be better for a different age group. My observation experience gave me insight into the responses that children would give to different activities and to the teacher. How can you implement the information gained from all assignments in your future classroom--even if you don’t choose to work with preschool or kindergarten-age children? Something that I think is a really good activity is having children have buddies from a different grades. So no matter which grade teach, I can make note of the benchmarks and have buddies in different grades and implement those to make sure they get the best experience possible. In general, it is important to take the benchmarks and apply them to the presentations of the curriculum, so they can...

...measurable learning outcomes, content outline and its relationship to other elements within the course. There will be an intervention designed for the course that will include the following: the topic, the time it will take, the room setup, the interactions of the students, the media, materials, learning objectives, Gagne Level, Taxonomy Level, Instructional strategy and the assessment plans. The conclusions that are drawn will be discussed. Fire Safety for Special Needs Students Project Name: Fire Safety for Special Needs Students Project Mgr: Linda Lee Learning Intervention It appears that the students in Ms. Lee’s special education class seem to be having difficulties learning basic survival skills. The classroom for children with special needs is designed like a home. Children are taught basic survival skills so that they will know what to do in an emergency. During a recent fire drill, the students held their hands over their ears instead of lining up at the door. Once we got them to the door we told them we are now going outside and four of the students turned toward the gym instead of toward the door that had been opened for them. In another case, while role-playing, the students were told that a classmate’s dress was on fire and was asked what to do, instead of answering that they should grab a blanket, throw it over the classmate and pull them to the ground, while patting the fire out, two students said throw water on it, six students said...

...Academic Literacy in the Classroom Vincent Bordi Grand Canyon University: SED 535 February 6, 2013 Abstract Presented in this paper is a class and student profile concerning literacy traits as observed in a 9th grade health class at Lathrop High School. From classroom observations and personal research the class as a whole was analyzed on how they were able to read and write while also observing the strategies the teacher used to promote these literacy skills. To better understand literacy skills used by the teacher in the classroom there was a meeting between him and I where we discussed different strategies that he incorporates into his lessons. Attached are the observation summaries along with a Venn diagram that is based off one student that was individually observed. Introduction What do you need to know to become an educator for adolescents? It is obviously a requirement to master the content being taught and having the ability to manage a classroom; however educators are sometimes oblivious to one trait and that is teaching literacy. Most information in the secondary classroom is extracted from text and a common misconception is that it is not the responsibility of content instructors to teach literacy. It is often thought teaching how to read and write is up to English teachers while a content educator only needs to focus on their content. Observed Classroom as Whole From the little time spent observing the classroom a lot of information was...

...Confidentiality in the Classroom RD Grand Canyon University: EDU 536 December 21, 2011 U.S. Education – Current and Future Trends Confidentiality is a hot topic – in the classroom, in business and in everyday life. Guarding personal information prior to the onslaught of identity theft was important but not to the extent that it is today. In today’s classroom protecting confidential information is a 3-fold process – protecting the student’s records, protecting personally identifiable information from the student’s record and allowing parent’s access to their child’s information. There are federal and state laws that govern confidentiality and how schools can and cannot utilize that information as outlined under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA, a federal law, applies to educational agencies or institutions that receive federal funds and protects the privacy of student educational records and assures parents the right to access those records. FERPA also allows authorized educational personnel the right to access and review student records without prior parental consent and in situations where conduct “poses a significant risk to the safety or well-being of a student, other students, or other members of the school community” allows the district to release information from a discipline record without consent to employees who have a legitimate educational interest in a student’s behavior. In Confidentiality issues: parental rights each...

...Rotman – Problem Solving Challenge In an interview back in 2013 when asked about the future of education with respect to wearable technology Bill Gates said that wearables was cool but he did not see a connection with education. I would like to disagree with him and believe that wearable technology has massive potential and can change the way we learn both inside and outside the classroom. While we have just started exploring the concept and many of the developments being made in just the past 2 years, the wearable technology is is still in its infancy with many companies just testing the waters and seeing where it leads. Current use of Technology in the Classroom When the ipad was released in 2010 it was initially dismissed to be a luxury item with no exact purpose but just in a couple of years it has sold more than 240mn units till Jan 2015 and has found its way in many industries including education. There are many schools and universities using tablets to facilitate the learning process. There will be a similar growth in the wearable technology sector. It will majorly affect the media, entertainment and enterprise industries and in a few years find its way in the education sector. ...After watching the English language learner parent video, the information I would use to build a strong home and school partnership with parents of the students that is in my care would be to encourage parents to get more involve with their child in school and at home. Parent’s involvement can make a huge difference in a child’s educational focus. Educating parents about education reform for English language learners is very important for the future of their child. The educational process help parents to be more involve with their children learning process by regulating their homework, communicating with the teacher on a regular bases and attending all teacher and parent conference. English language learners parents that are involve with their children education believe that a good education will teach life values, independence, high self-esteem and tools for employment. In addition, I would encourage parents to attend all workshops that can improve parents and teachers relationships. Workshops have proven to be very helpful in educating English language learners to be more aware of what’s going on with the school environment. Becoming more directly, involved with the school system parents can put their input on their child’s education. These involvements not only include the school environment but home as well. Parents should be encouraged to ask their child for homework assignments and offer assistance if needed. Also if the parents don’t understand the homework there...

...Parents are involved with the program at all levels. Some of the area that parents have an input in is program planning, policy development, program governance and curriculum that is taught in the classroom. In 2013, 2,582 parents volunteered in the classroom, attended parent meetings and policy council meeting, all with the goal of improving the Head Start program for their children and the children to come after they leave.
