Sometimes having one’s talents or strengths being under utilized in the workplace isn’t always in our control. During the last several years of my work as a paralegal, I was just “going through the motions” doing the same nonsense day in and day out.

In the world of insurance defense, productivity was the ultimate sign of success. The maxim, “if you breathe, you bill” was a way of life and the more work you got done efficiently and accurately, the better.

The Clifton StrengthFinder® survey revealed that my top strength theme was Learner. According to Dr. Clifton, a learner has a great desire to learn and to continuously improve. He further opines that the Learner enjoys the “deliberate journey from ignorance to competence”. (Clifton, D.O.,

...Strengthquest Shawna Davis Kaplan University Strengthquest Shawna Davis October 25, 2013 FIVE TOP THEMES I. Strength: How has this strength manifested in your current practice (please be specific)? Individualization: I try to approach each or my patients, my patient’s family members, and my co-workers in a non-judgmental way. I like the challenge of trying to figure out what makes people “tick” or what motivates others. People have always told me that I Am really good at reading people. I enjoy finding out what makes each person unique and I enjoy learning how everyone is different. I think this is an invaluable skill as a nurse. Using kindness, tolerance, and empathy, I try to understand how each person can best receive information and then try to tailor my style or approach so that we can find a common ground or perhaps even a bond. I learned this skill early on in my nursing career as a psychiatric nurse but I have used it in every area I have worked in. I also try to use it with my co-workers. It’s an excellent skill to have in a team situation, I really enjoy getting everyone to work together. II. Strength: How has this strength manifested in your current practice (please be specific)? Positivity: I have always loved being a nurse but I am especially lucky to bring life into this world, most days I go to work. It is an incredible honor to be there guiding the way for my patients and their family members. I have been a part of so many...

...Full Theme Descriptions Strengths Achiever Your Achiever theme helps explain your drive. Achiever describes a constant need for achievement. You feel as if every day starts at zero. By the end of the day you must achieve something tangible in order to feel good about yourself. And by “every day” you mean every single day — workdays, weekends, vacations. No matter how much you may feel you deserve a day of rest, if the day passes without some form of achievement, no matter how small, you will feel dissatisfied. You have an internal fire burning inside you. It pushes you to do more, to achieve more. After each accomplishment is reached, the fire dwindles for a moment, but very soon it rekindles itself, forcing you toward the next accomplishment. Your relentless need for achievement might not be logical. It might not even be focused. But it will always be with you. As an Achiever you must learn to live with this whisper of discontent. It does have its benefits. It brings you the energy you need to work long hours without burning out. It is the jolt you can always count on to get you started on new tasks, new challenges. It is the power supply that causes you to set the pace and define the levels of productivity for your work group. It is the theme that keeps you moving. Activator “When can we start?” This is a recurring question in your life. You are impatient for action. You may concede that analysis has its uses or that debate and discussion can occasionally yield some valuable...

...A. Identify a current nursing practice within your healthcare setting that requires change. DEVELOPING OR CREATING AN INDEX TO MINIMIZE RISKS OFPRESSURE SORE 1. Describe the current nursing practice. An instrument specifically designed to aid health care workers evaluate the dangers of pressure sores that a patient faces is called the Braden Scale. After assessment, the victim is categorized depending on six aspects: capability of physical activity, hydration and nutrition status, capacity to alter position, the ability to respond after sensing discomfort related to pressure, shearing or exposure of the skin to friction during locomotion, and skin exposure to moisture. If the overall score is lower it means the risk of pressure sore is higher (Changing Practice, Changing Lives: 10 Landmark Nursing Research Studies, n.d). Prior to this Change, Skin assessment was based on non- formalized risk assessment which varies with each clinical practice. 2. Discuss why the current nursing practice needs to be changed Using non-formalized risk assessment in Predicting pressure ulcer resulted in non-uniformity and personal clinical judgement which varies from one person to another. Using Clinical judgement is more effective where the staffs are experienced and their experience assist in appropriate predictability, but with novice staff, the use of clinical judgment is inappropriate. In a multisite trial, Braden scale was tested by clinics bringing together skilled nursing facilities...

Strategic Thinking strengths are the ones who keep us focus on what could be. They are constantly absorbing and analyzing information and helping the team make better decisions. People with strength in this domain continually stretch our thinking for the future. I agree with the strengths finder assessment because I’m also told that I’m also serious and that I think too much at times. I’m always being told to light up and I try to for the most part, but it seems more like a task, because it a natural thing for me, I’m assuming that is where the deliberative aspect is recognized. I tend to be selective with whom I spend my time with and how I spend my time. I would rather be home reading a book, looking at documentary or something that I can learn and grow from. Before making a decision I like to take my time and think about all the scenarios that could happen and try to come up with a contingency plans just in case the original or back up plans fail. Once I’m comfortable with my choice or decision I will add my thoughts whenever possible I tend to read a lot and hold on to my books for future use, I’m also thinking a time is going to come when...

Using Brain-Based Techniques to Increase Academic Achievement in Students with Learning Disabilities and General Education Students

...Abstract The objective of this action plan is to introduce researched based strategies into a fifth grade collaborative classroom to increase students with learning-disabilities academic performance by incorporating brain-based strategies into daily lessons and implementing parental involvement. These students display poor test scores, low motivation and behaviors that negatively impact their learning. The purpose of the plan is to determine if incorporating brain-based strategies would help raise test scores and improve student behaviors. Researched based strategies will be included through the following methods: teaching to the brains natural learning systems, and BrainSMART strategies to increase the students’ ability to retain information. The success of this plan will be measured through examination of students’ Georgia Criterion Reference Competency Test (GCRCT), Quarterly Benchmark Assessments (QBA), a teacher-developed observation checklist, and a parent survey. As a result of this plan students will show an increase in academic performance in reading and math and appropriate learning behaviors. Introduction Although research suggests that the specific teaching of thinking skills is proven to dramatically increase student achievement, these skills are seldom taught systematically in American schools. At the same time, studies suggest that IQ without such specific teaching may account for only 4% to 10% of life success (as cited...

Inclusion Outline

...“Inclusion is a philosophy that brings diverse students, families, educators, and community members together to create schools and other social institutions based on acceptance, belonging and community.” (Salend 6) “Inclusion recognizes that all students are learners who benefit from a meaningful, challenging, and appropriate curriculum, and differentiated instruction techniques that address their unique strengths and needs.” (Salend 6) “Inclusion programs provide all students with access to a challenging, engaging and flexible curriculum that helps them to be successful in society.” (Salend 6) Inclusion not only benefits those children who are disabled but also the children without disabilities because it is an opportunity for them to learn about disabilities and learn to accept the differences that everyone has. While inclusion may not be for every child out there, the benefits greatly outweigh the negatives, thus why an inclusive classroom has been more and more pushed as the way to go for education of younger children. (Browne 117-118) “Children with disabilities need the same things in their environment as other children. They need an environment that is safe, secure, and predictable and one that provides a balance of the familiar and novel, so that there are materials and activities that provide for their development.” (Browne 342) There is no one law that forces classrooms to be inclusive, but when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in...

...John Maxwell The 360-Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization (Thomas Nelson, 2005) Summarised by George Wells This summary was written as a weekly email to the staff in George’s Department. The “Some things to think about” sections are by George and were geared for the staff in their context. In this book, Maxwell deals with an important topic: not everyone is called to be the top leader in an organisation, and so we need to learn to lead from "the middle". The idea of 360-Degree Leadership is that we should be able to "lead up", influencing our leaders, "lead across", influencing our peers, and "lead down", influencing those lower down the organisational hierarchy. As usual, Maxwell gets his points across with a series of fairly brief, pithy chapters dealing with various practical issues. He introduces the first section, which deals with myths about leadership, by reflecting on the sorts of people we instinctively think of when we think of "a leader": William Wallace, Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi, etc. He points out that this is misleading as "99% of all leadership occurs not from the top but from the middle of an organization". Taking this further, all of us can lead effectively, even if we're not the Vice Chancellor or the CEO. He notes that many people are good in one direction (e.g. they have influence with their boss, but alienate the people who report to them, or are great with their team, but do no get along...

Garments Business in Bangladesh

...1. Introduction After independence in 1971, Bangladesh moved to a private sector led export oriented economy in late 1970’s from a highly protected government led economy in search of prosperity and growth. Even though there was little growth and development in the country as a whole; one particular sector, the Readymade Garment (RMG) industry was the beneficiary of privatization. From 0.2 percent in 1980’s, it came to 75 percent in 2004-05 of country’s total export. This industry employs 1.8 million people of whom 90 percent are women. Trade liberalization as a form of globalization followed by the imposition of quotas by US was the key input while entrepreneurs played the anchor role to take advantage of these conditions. Government also came forward with favourable policies for further growth. However, the quota oriented worldwide apparel trade came to an end on December 2004. What is going to happen in the Bangladesh apparel industry, which was predicted to lose its stake in an open market? This dissertation aims to discover the condition of the apparel industry as a whole at present and how the firms adjust to the situation with their internal rearrangement. Additionally, issues considered as vital for industry’s growth, such as infrastructure, information technology in the form of database, internet and software, and capacity building will be discussed. The dissertation starts with the global picture of apparel trade, and with a brief description how this trade...
