Investigating an Everyday Cleaning Product For the disinfectant and antibiotic resistance assignment, I found Clorox Disinfecting Wipes in my dorm bathroom. Disinfecting wipes kill 99.999% of bacteria, cold and flu viruses, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Salmonella enterica, and Streptococcus pyogenes. The active ingredients in the disinfecting product are Alkyl C12-18 Dimethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride and Alkyl C12-14 Dimethylethylbenzyl Ammonium Chloride. The chemicals are both quaternary ammonium compounds. The mode of action for the chemicals are to bind to the phospholipids and proteins of the bacteria cell membranes to damage them.
