However when I actually went inside and got to take a look at all of the pieces, I was pleasantly surprised. I felt like many of these pieces were very good, however the ones that really stood out to me were Xenobia Bailey’s Paradise Under Reconstruction in the Aesthetic of Funk along with Joyce J. Scott’s wooden figure, and Januwa Moja’s Queen of Spades. Bailey’s piece easily grabbed my attention simply because of some of the elements she used in it. Her quilting patterns in particular were brilliant and resembled a style of ghanaian kente cloth with a twist of native american craftsmanship. Scott’s use of plastic beads, glass and various cloths to decorate her wooden figure stayed true to the theme of “Brides of Anansi”, however it also added another element of diversity due to the fact that some of the decorations looked asian as well. The two pieces being right beside one another was especially eye popping for me because I thought they were initially done by the same person, and I really liked how they complemented each other. Moja’s Queen of Spades was similar to Scott’s wooden figure in that they were both pieces that used humanoid figures, however that is where the similarities end.
