Introduction
The Institute of Certified Management Accountants (ICMA) is publishing this book of practice questions with answers to help you prepare for the CMA examination. Each question is referenced to the Content Specification Outline (CSO) and the Learning
Outcome Statements (LOS). These questions are actual “retired” questions from the
CMA exams and are intended to supplement other study materials.
These practice questions will help you test your understanding of the concepts and rules included in your CMA study materials by requiring you to apply those concepts and rules to unique and varying situations. You will encounter different scenarios and applications on your actual examination so it is essential that you understand the underlying concepts.
In general, it will not be helpful to you to memorize particular questions.
Essay questions appear in both Part 1 and Part 2 of the CMA exam and combine topics from the part in which they appear. No inference should be made from the lack of practice questions in any topic areas. All topic areas listed in the Content Specification for each exam part can be tested in the essay questions for that part at the difficulty levels shown. The CMA Program is a rigorous test of your skills and capabilities and requires dedication to be successful. We hope that these practice questions will be a valuable resource as you pursue your goal of certification. Good luck!

Blast

...John Bartlow Martin / The Blast in Centralia No. 5: A Mine Disaster No One Stopped Already the crowd had gathered. Cars clogged the short, black rock road from the highway to the mine, cars bearing curious spectators and relatives and friends of the men entombed. State troopers and deputy sheriffs and the prosecuting attorney came, and officials from the company, the Federal Bureau of Mines, the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals. Ambulances ar- rived, and doctors and nurses and Red Cross workers and soldiers with stretchers from Scott Field. Mine res- cue teams came, and a federal rescue unit, experts bur- dened with masks and oxygen tanks and other awkward paraphernalia of disaster. . . . One hundred and eleven men were killed in that explosion. Killed needlessly, for almost everybody concerned had known for months, even years, that the mine was dangerous. Yet nobody had done any- thing effective about it. Why not? Let us examine the background of the explosion. Let us study the mine and the miners, Joe Bryant and Bill Rowekamp and some others, and also the numerous people who might have saved the miners’ lives but did not. The miners had appealed in various directions for help but got none, not from their state government nor their federal government nor their employer nor their own union. (In threading the maze of official- dom we must bear in mind four agencies in author- ity: The State of Illinois, the United States Government, the Centralia...

Careers

...Careers Microcomputer Accounting II April 8, 2011 Find Out About Yourself I took the Career Interest Game. The three categories I selected were Conventional, Realistic, and Investigative which makes me CRI. My first choice was the Conventional otherwise known as “The Organizers.” I can relate to most of the list under the “Are You?” category. I am well organized, accurate, and efficient in most everything I set out to accomplish. I like things to be structured and organized. I always try to be polite but yet persistent in every task I pursue. I am practical and orderly and I like working with numbers. The methodical, thrifty and ambitious are probably the ones I do not agree pertain to me as a person. I agree with everything listed under the “Can You?” category since I do work with a lot of paperwork in a short period of time. My current position requires me to constantly work on a computer terminal and keep accurate records. I am also required to write business correspondence often and work in a team setting as well as individually. My job requires me to follow certain procedures and pay attention to detail. There is also a great deal of typing and data entry involved in my daily tasks. I also have to collect information and organize it in a specific manner. My work revolves around numbers and currency figures. The only thing on the list that I do not agree with is shorthand; I never took a class for it nor have I ever used it. Under the Conventional category...

If you ask many Canadians about their health care system they do address the fact that they are fortunate and happy to have universal health care but do have some issues with it. To fully understand Canada’s health care you must start to understand it from its core. The mismanagement of health care has resulted to long wait times and made it the biggest political issue facing Canadian health care (Rachlis, 2005). Wait times in Canada has become a major issue in the health care system and a major set back in providing good quality health services to Canadians. Along with addressing the issues of wait times I will also include the problems of packed emergency rooms, what exactly these wait times are and how it can improve. When ill or in pain, there is nothing more frightening or frustrating than having to wait for treatment. M Ssozi Abstract: Efficient conduct of monetary policy in a currency union demands that partner states have similar business cycles, inflation convergence and strong economic ties. The first essay investigates inflation convergence, which is important for a number of reasons: avoiding inflation bias and is an indicator of structural similarities. The essay goes beyond the traditional pairwise unit root tests and applies an unobserved dynamic factor model to test asymmetry in inflation variation. Convergence is measured by the percentage of variation in inflation that is common across countries. The results suggest inflation convergence in the EAC. The main contribution of this essay is the use of an unobserved component model to estimate the degree of inflation convergence in the EAC. The second essay investigates the degree of business cycle synchronization and the evolution of synchronization over time. Inflation divergence is an indicator of structural differences between countries....
