Introduction
Schools play a vital role in inculcating desirable traits and values among students through a wide range of programmes and activities. Apart from the academic lessons focused in the classrooms, the schools ensure that students participate in the varieties of co-curricular activities (formerly known as extra-curricular activities) and try to instill acceptable values in order to produce industrious citizens.
This assignment is about values of co-curricular activities. It will define what co-curricular activities are and its concepts, role of co-curricular activities in a student life, educational values of co-curricular activities and a deep insight into a co-curricular activity, which is English literary club.
Definition and concepts of co-curricular activities:
According to Mohamad (2011) “co-curricular activities are activities that support students to acquire new knowledge, enhance classroom experience and promote the development of organizational skills” (p.150). Co-curricular activities include uniformed groups, sports, games, club activities, organizing special project, taking leadership training courses, participating in volunteer work and so on. Through various activities, schools play a vital role in strengthening and enhancing the concepts that students learn which ultimately develops the character of the students.
As per Sulaiman & Amri (2011) the concepts of co-curriculum are divided into two parts. Firstly, the co-curricular activities should be a part of curriculum in which all students must take part. Mostly based on the nature of the activities, they are carried out, in and out of the classrooms. For example, teachers can conduct fieldtrips where all students can participate. Normally field trips are carried outside the classroom with the intention to let the students explore more about the concepts of the lesson taught.
Secondly, co-curricular activities focus on hidden traits such as values, skills and talents which are required for the development of the student. For example, a child who participates in school band helps him/her to become more routine and discipline. In addition, it enables to inculcate team-spirit, co-operation, punctuality and diligence.
Similarly as other countries, in Maldives even co-curricular activities are incorporated in the school curriculum, which is used to inculcate hidden aspects such as, values, beliefs, attitudes among the students in order to prepare their minds to help students to score good grades in academic subjects. Based on the policies established in the schools, it is compulsory for every student to participate at least in one activity they prefer. Due to limited space in two session schools, most of the school co-

curricular activities are carried out after school hours. However, one session schools conduct co-curricular activities in their session time. Co-curricular activities such as sports, cadet, and band are carried out by skilled people. Their hard work is always recognized by the school.

Role of co-curricular activities in a student life:
Co-curricular activities are incorporated as part of the school curriculum to provide lot of experiences for the students. According to Sulaiman & Amri (2011) co-curricular activities emphasize on increasing and enhancing students’ learning in the classroom. The roles of co-curricular activities in a student’s life are as follows:
1- To acquire new skills to face the unforeseen situations
Since co-curricular activities are supplemented as a part of the school curriculum, it enables students to develop their potentiality. As a result students acquire new skills and talents to meet the needs of the unexpected world. According to Dash & Dash (2008) students who participate in co-curricular activities such as sports and games, are active and energetic which assist them to overcome difficulties easily as they develop courage, stamina and mental alertness through activities. Thus, they have physical ability to work at hard times.
2- To cultivate social values and societal spirit among students
Today, cooperation and collaboration among citizens is considered as one of the essential demands to foster public spirit Ahmad (2011). It would be difficult for teachers to foster these kinds of spirits constantly in the classroom through subjects like mathematics, science. Therefore, co-curricular activities have created a platform for students to acquire social values by interacting with their colleagues. As a result of these activities students accept fair play, feel intimacy, tolerance and create unity, harmony and togetherness among students.
Since, most of the co-curricular activities are carried out in a competitive environment, it enables students to work together to achieve a common goal. In addition, it provides students to enhance their basic leadership skills, develop their characters and social spirit among themselves. According to Fritscher (2013) children who engage in

Depending upon pre-test scores, 200 students of 10th class were divided into two equal groups (n=100) named as experimental group and control group. The experimental group was involved in co-curricular activities and the control group did not participate in any activity beyond the classroom. There were two types of co-curricular activities. First physical i.e., games, athletics and P.T (physical training) etc and the other was debates, drama speeches etc. The experimental group carried out activities for forty minutes daily for twelve weeks. The post-test was administered after twelve weeks. The pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups served as data for this study.
