Museum description;
This museum is dedicated to providing the public information about the understanding of natural science, environment, and cultural history of the coastal region of the Carolinas. It provides an understanding of the earth, solar system, and universe.
Subject matter; Natural science, environment, and cultural history of the coastal region of the Carolinas.
Target audience (Is it clearly identified? Describe the targeted age groups.);
The website seems to advertise programs for every age group. Their target audience does not seem to be very apparent on their website. The museum does seem to provide more programs …show more content…
It states it aims to teach visitors about the cultural history, natural science, plant and animal environment along with other information related such as the effects the rest of the world has on this particular coast.
How is object-based learning presented? Give examples;
The object-based learning within the museum included many different kinds. Exhibits containing sea creature’s skeletons, shells, replicas of islands, replicas of animals on islands, and prehistoric and historic artifacts from the Coastal Carolina’s human occupation were all object-based within the museum. Each of these objects/artifacts listed and more are set in an exhibit for interpretation. The exhibits all include a brief description of the pieces. Each description is not overwhelming with its information, but simply introduces each piece, leaving it open for further thought by the visitors.
Most of the museum is object-based learning. A few exhibits demonstrate a phenomenon. One entire room is painted and set up like the bottom of the ocean. Sea creatures are exhibited on the bottom floor and hung from the ceilings as if they were swimming. Each creature is positioned where it habitats. Plaques are set up around the walkthrough to help visitors identify the creatures around …show more content…
The exhibits in place focus on the studies of paleontology, archaeology, mammalogy, and geology. The exhibits listed on the site range from prehistory and history of Virginia, Ice Age, Fossils, Watersheds, social cultures, and even discovering the Reef. This museum seems to cover a vast majority of subjects under its Natural History theme.
Target audience (Is it clearly identified? Describe the targeted age groups.);
From what is being presented mostly on the front page of the website as well as most of the links and tabs, it seems to be that this museum is geared toward schools groups from kindergarten through till high school grade levels. They seem to focus on the standards of learning set by Virginia, which corresponds to target audience. The site also seems to focus on other organized groups such as having programs and downloadable documents for scouts, birthday parties, youth volunteers, summer camps, and even offering special student tours and programs.
Are the learning goals and objectives clearly defined?

Be sure to explicitly apply the rules of ethical decision-making in determining your answer. “A marketing team presents a children's cereal brand manager with a ‘Less Sugar’ ad campaign for three of her brands.  Large print and dynamic type on the package exclaiming ‘75% LESS SUGAR’ will catch the parent’s eye and increase sales. Concerned about their children’s weight gain, parents will purchase the cereal.  The carbohydrate content of the less sugar product, however, is the same as high sugar version, at best only10 fewer calories per bowl, so it offers no weight loss advantage.  The brand manager’s immediate reaction is ‘This marketing campaign is unethical.’” (Hamilton, J.A., 2009). Hurricanes

...Hurricanes, A Natural Disaster! COM/215 May 3, 2011 Hurricanes, A Natural Disaster! According to Dictionary.com (2011) a hurricane is “A storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone…a wind of force 12 on the Beaufort scale (equal to or exceeding 64 knots or 74mph). As I read through the National Hurricane Center website by NOAA, our National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration it shares with us what a hurricane is, and how it reaches hurricane status. A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone, which is generic term for a low pressure system that generally forms in the tropics. The cyclone is accompanied by thunderstorms and, the Northern Hemisphere, a counterclockwise circulation of winds near the earth’s surface. Much like the trim levels of a vehicle, Hurricanes have a similar ranking. Starting off with a system of clouds, thunderstorms, and maximum wind speeds of 38 mph, the system becomes organized and categorized as a Tropical Depression. A step above that brings you into the category of a Tropical Storm where you will find: stronger winds speeds from 39 mph to a max of 73 mph, stronger thunderstorms, and a defined surface with an eye. Finally starting at 74 mph the storm becomes classified as a Category I Hurricane. Once the system reaches its Hurricane status, there are five categories. |Category |Wind Speeds (from xxx mph up to xxx mph) | ...

Shoes are what the company is known for but they also sell a variety of products including t-shirts, hoodies, beanies, watches, socks, hats and backpacks. The very first Vans shoe store opened at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California on March 1st, 1966 by Paul Van Doren. Van Doren worked with a shoe company on the East Coast, but was unhappy with the company so he and his partners moved to Southern California to create Vans. The Van Doren Rubber Company was unique in that it manufactures shoes and directly sells them to the public. Vans wanted to create a shoe that could stand up to any situation and be strong and durable, so they created their trademark waffle pattern on the bottom of the shoes with extra rubber for strength. Oceanic Damage: What Have We Done to Our Planet?

...Oceanic Damage: What have we done to our planet? Negative press, research, and reports from around the world raised issues regarding our problematic oceans. Misguided and crucial errors humans make harm oceans using unsustainable practices which eventually eliminate many species of sea creatures and destroy the water they inhabit and we need for our survival as well. Countries around the world have been heavily positively praised while some have been lauded negatively, for instance, the United States. A crying shame how most countries on Earth seem in continuing spiraling towards ecological harm in an abundance of forms, regarding ocean garbage, coral reefs and oil spills over a twenty-five year period have caused our oceans’ ecology suffering to escalate. Incidents regarding a floating garbage patch in the Pacific, even cruise ships repeating sewage and garbage dumping are atrocious. The problem is, most people do not pay attention and take situations such as these as non-existent. Evidence documented over decades suggest our oceans’ trouble will continue unless change happens sooner rather than later. Change in how we respond to problems should not take years for resolution, because some of the damage may be minute and builds up over time, while some comes in big bunches that there is not time to waste in resolving. In some of these cases, years elapsed before any significant progress had been made, resulting in more damage than first observed. The problems have similarities...

Video Games: an Innovative Approach to Education

...Hayes 1 Kimberly Hayes GLS 502-800 Ashley Hudson April 23, 2013 Video Games: An Innovative Approach to Education Ten years ago, I’d have scoffed if I heard video games and education used in the same sentence, and I know a lot of other parents who would still have a similar reaction. In more recent years, however, I’ve been forced to change my opinion, and the person who influenced the change the most is, of all people, my children’s pediatrician, Dr. Jim Poole, the founder of Growing Child Pediatrics in Wake Forest, N.C. Having two children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) isn’t easy in the educational environment present in schools today, and through Dr. Poole’s work with my children, I have come to understand that the reason for the difficulty is that traditional curriculums that teachers have to work with aren’t flexible enough to allow them to tailor to children with learning differences. So what does this have to do with video games? A LOT. Video games have the potential to break down educational barriers that exist in the traditional classroom by providing alternative learning approaches that cater to kids with ADHD and other learning differences, and by building cognitive skills that can help all children succeed in the classroom. When I first discovered that my oldest child might have ADHD from his eighth grade teachers, they all told me that he needed medication before entering high school. I didn’t like the idea of medicating my child, so I began...

Maritime Power of Chaina

...The Maritime Strategy of China in the Asia-Pacific Region Origins, Development and Impact HUANG, AN-HAO Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2009 School of Social and Political Sciences Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT This thesis aims to examine how and why a continental-oriented China has shifted its maritime strategic orientation and naval force structure from its coast toward the far seas in an era of interdependent international system. Generally, China is an ancient continental land power with an incomplete oceanic awareness. With the transformation after the Cold War of China’s grand strategy from landward security to seaward security, maritime security interests have gradually become the most essential part of China’s strategic rationale. Undoubtedly, the quest for sea power and sea rights has become Beijing’s main maritime strategic issue. Given China’s escalating maritime politico-economic-military leverage in the Asia-Pacific region, its desire to become a leading sea power embodying global strategic thinking means that it must expand its maritime strategy by developing its navy and preparing for armed confrontation in terms of international relations realism. Conversely, Beijing’s maritime policy leads at the same time towards globalization, which involves multilateralism and strategic coexistence of a more pragmatic kind. This research...

Food Tourism

...this dissertation concerned identifying the underlying dimensions of food tourism, developing a conceptual framework that explains participation in food tourism, develop taxonomy of food tourists by segmenting the tourists based on their participation in food tourism, and finally identifying the variables that predict membership in these food tourist segments. The effect of sociodemographic variables on participation in food tourism, and their association with the food tourist segments were also examined. Further, all the findings were analyzed within the theoretical framework of the world culture theory of globalization and the cultural capital theory. Based on the survey responses of 341 tourists visiting the four coastal counties of South Carolina, the analyses revealed that food tourism is composed of five dimensions or classes of activities. These include dining at restaurants known for local cuisines, purchasing local food products, consuming local beverages, dining at high quality restaurants, and dining at familiar chain restaurants and franchises. The conceptual variables...

Global Warming

...GLOBAL WARMING: Energy, Fall 2005 v30 i4 p36(2) It could get a lot warmer. (GLOBAL WARMING) Full Text: COPYRIGHT 2005 Business Communications Company, Inc. If humans continue to use fossil fuels in a business as usual manner for the next few centuries, the polar ice caps will be depleted, ocean sea levels will rise by seven meters and median air temperatures will soar to 14.5 degrees warmer than current day. These are the stunning results of climate and carbon cycle model simulations conducted by scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. By using a coupled climate and carbon cycle model to look at global climate and carbon cycle changes, the scientists found that the earth would warm by 8 degrees Celsius (14.5 degrees Fahrenheit) if humans use the entire planet's available fossil fuels by the year 2300. The jump in temperature would have alarming consequences for the polar ice caps and the ocean, said lead author Govindasamy Bala of the Laboratory's Energy and Environment Directorate. In the polar regions alone, the temperature would spike more than 20 degrees Celsius, forcing the land in the region to change from ice and tundra to boreal forests. "The temperature estimate is actually conservative because the model didn't take into consideration changing land use such as deforestation and build-out of cities into outlying wilderness areas," Bala said. Today's level of atmospheric carbon dioxide is 380 parts per million (ppm). By the year 2300, the model...
