Gm Ignition Switch Scandal

...engineers experience problems with ignition switches on the Ion. The exact problem was with a mechanism in the car that is supposed to hold the ignition key in place. According to GM’s records, an internal report shows that the problem was resolved when the switch was redesigned and fixed. Not too long after this initial issue in 2004 a GM service technician sees a Saturn Ion stall while being driven stating that "several other keys on the key ring” was the issue. The technician then records within the same report that "the additional weight of the keys had worn out the ignition switch." (Valdes-Dapena, 2014) Another major ethical dilemma occurred in the testing and manufacturing of another GM car, Chevrolet Cobalt. In 2004, A GM engineer bumps into the key in a Chevrolet Cobalt during testing, thus causing it to immediately lose power. In 2005 General Motors receives increasingly more reports of Chevrolet Cobalt’s engines turning off when keys are accidentally bumped or moved out of the "Run" position. It was reported that engineers came with the idea to fix the problem. The idea was to head of the key be redesigned so that the various objects that may be hanging from the key chain are less likely to move or jostle it. That proposal is initially...

Cobalt Systems and Siverlight Electronics

...1.      Present the discrepancies of business practices, policy and strategy between the 2 countries Cobalt Systems is a multinational corporation present in more than 50 countries divided into regions. Cobalt Systems is a highly centralized organization as all the operations throughout the world are overseen by 13 US based ‘Management Board’ members. The company large number of layers between the Management Board and the local employees (hierarchical organization) doesn’t allow much room for empowerment. It is an ethnocentric company with a people oriented culture that provides all its local employees around the world with extensive training in order to socialize them to the Cobalt culture. Moreover, Cobalt Systems insists on fully owning its foreign subsidiaries as they are seen as “national assets” (where national refers to American). Therefore the company doesn’t trust its foreign subsidiaries and is paranoid about losing technological secrets to competitors. Silverlight Electronics is a Korean based company selling its high tech products in Korea and abroad. It is part of the SiverLight Chaebol; a family of firms held together by cross-ownership and close personal ties. The SilverLight Chaebol offers a horizontal multi-industry integration. Therefore, SilverLight’s products are mostly the result of the SilverLight Chaebol’s work rather than from SilverLight Electronics itself. The company has enjoyed the government’s help and national protectionism over the past 40 years...

Mining Industry

... is rich in resources. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is home to vast reserves of a wide variety of natural resources – primary among them being metals such as cobalt, copper, gold and precious stones, including diamonds. DRC is believed to contain around 4% of the world‟s copper reserves and one-third of its cobalt reserves. The mining industry, like the rest of the economy in the central African nation, had suffered due to an unstable political environment, coupled with widespread strife caused by the six-year civil war that ended in 2003. However, there are indications that investors are now willing to discount the political risk premium of investing in the DRC, given the high prices of minerals on global markets, and therefore the potential of holding mineral rights within the country. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Africa's largest nation, has abundant mineral resources including, cobalt, copper, gold and diamonds. A majority of the mineral resources are concentrated in the southern and eastern provinces of the nation. The DRC is the world's largest producer of cobalt. However, the production of cobalt is not expected to chart an exceptional growth path, with many small mining players switching from the metal to copper. Constrained supply and political instability are pushing up cobalt prices. All mineral deposits in the DRC are state-owned and the holder of mining rights also gains ownership of the mineral products for sale. Governed by the National...

Qunatfying Soution Compostion

...Composition In investigation #6 we worked with a stock of 10ml of .250M of Cobalt(II)Chloride. The ratio was 5 to 10. I diluted 5 milliliters of Cobalt(II)Chloride with 5 milliliters of distilled water into test tube 1. After I took 5ml of test tube 1 and applied it too test tube 2, which had 5ml of distilled water. I repeated this process with test tube 3 and test tube 4 and test tube 5. The concentration levels of the Cobalt(II)Chloride decreased along each test tube, you could tell since each test tube became a lighter shade of reddish pink. The reason to this was because I needed to determine the wavelength and absorption of the colored solution in each solution. The absorption spectrum(absorption spectra) is used to measure the absorption of radiation as a frequency or wavelength due to the interaction of the substance with the sample. It is used as tool to determine the presence of a particular substance and the quantity of the substance present in the sample or samples, as in this case I have 5 test tubes. The absorption spectrum for cobalt(II)chloride with the color red has a wavelength of 680nm(nanometers). This means that the solution did not absorb a lot of the color red. From the graph we can see that green was absorbed the most which had a maximum wavelength of 551nm(nanometers). Since the green was mostly absorbed, it was not reflected through the sample when hit with light. The absorbance of the cobalt(II)chloride is found first because with that we are able to find out...

...saturated magnetization and coercivities for CoFe2-xZnxO4 powders as a function of compositions calcined at 900 ºC for 48 h. The magnetization value of doped samples increased sharply with the external magnetic field strength at the low field region. The highest saturated magnetization can be obtained in x = 0.1 Zn doped cobalt ferrites. Increasing in saturated magnetization can be attributed to influence of the cationic stoichiometry and its occupancy in specific sites. The magnetic order in the cubic system of ferromagnetic spinels was due to occurrence of the super-exchange interaction mechanism between metal ions in the tetrahedral A-site and octahedral B-site [20]....

...Chapa University of Phoenix TEC/401 – Week 1 Individual Assignment Dr. Isidro Grau July 22, 2009 Technology and Management Functions I am currently working at an investment firm as an Accounts Payable Clerk and I am in charge of entering bills as well as cutting company checks. In this firm, the owner of the company has invested in a variety of companies of different industries. For instance, he has invested, also in partnership, in an Oil and Gas, Commercial Real Estate, and a Wireless Service Company. Although all these companies are overflowing with numerous types of technology, I am focusing on one in particular, the wireless data company called Cobalt Broadband Corporation. Personally, I feel this company’s technology has plenty of pros and cons that could be beneficial as well as harmful for their business. Cobalt Broadband provides high-speed wireline and wireless services that is not only affordable but enables many people from the country to gain access to wireless internet services. This company has been in business between five to seven years and servicing more than seven hundred customers. Many of our customer base are located in country setting areas, outside of Houston, as in Liberty Hill, Bellville, Hempstead, Waller, San Marcos, Lexington, Columbus and a couple of other small towns around Houston. The reason we don’t service in Houston is mainly because of all of the competition as in Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. There is no way we could...

Art History and Storytelling

...Art and storytelling go hand in hand in many cultures. The art ancient Egyptians, early Christian’s and the Muslims were designed to help tell the viewers a story about what that culture found important. There are similarities which connect these three distinct cultures’ works of art, but each’s specific iconography directed and distinguished the art to their own culture, and thus reflects the storytelling needs of each culture. An example of ancient Egyptian art is The Funerary Stele of Amenemhat, c.2000 BCE is an 11”x15” piece of painted limestone housed in the Cairo Museum. The background is painted gray. Across the top of the Stele, between two incised horizontal lines, are engraved hieroglyphics inviting food offerings for the deceased. The names of Amenemhat, his wife Iyi, son Antef and daughter Hapy are also etched into the limestone just beneath the line that separates the hieroglyphics from the carving itself. Shown on the left side of the Stele, Amenemhat, Iyi and Antef are seen sitting atop a white padded, black lion-legged bench. Antef sits between his mother and father, facing and embracing his father, while his mother is embracing him. Under the bench is a light tan basket holding a black instrument. At the right of the Stele is Hapy. Her right hand is on her chest while her left arm is at her side. Between Amenemhat, Iyi, Antef and Hapy is a white table zigzagged with black lines that holds enormous food offerings. The creator of the Stele must...

Water of Hydration

...WATER OF HYDRATION Experiment No. 5 I. Objectives 1. To be able to identify and know the different properties of hydrates. 2. To observe and test the reversibility of hydration reaction. 3. To test and compare substance for efflorescence and deliquescence. 4. To determine the percent water in a hydrate. II. Results and Discussions According to Hamak, Hydrates are ionic compounds (crystalline salts) that are bonded to water molecules thus having a definite amount of it as part of their structures. This “water of hydration” is released as vapor when the hydrate is heated in which it loses water and become dehydrated (anhydrous). The remaining solid is known as the anhydrous salt. The general reaction for heating a hydrate is: A. Identification of Hydrates Compounds of Nickel Chloride (NiCl2), Potassium Chloride (KCl), Sodium Tetraborate or Borax (Na2B4O7·10H2O), Sucrose (C12H22O11), Potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) and Barium Chloride (BaCl2) each in about 0.5 grams were heated on a Bunsen flame and their behavior was then observed specifically determining whether one is a hydrate. WCM has an opportunity to apply its experience in the mining industry in terms of management and production for short-term and long-term gain. By engaging in the project, WCM will improve its reputation, increase its goodwill because of a likely increase in its share price, and potentially establish a new considerable source of income. The risks, however, are substantial. Firstly, security risk that is considered high due to social instability of African countries may reduce the site’s revenue considerably and cost about $1 million annually to mitigate. Secondly, there is a medium exploitation risk because of quality of geologists’ reports. Moreover, economic...

The Bucket List

...The bucket list The Bucket List; what can I say? The Bucket List is a movie starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson about the exploits in life they never got to accomplish and set out to do so after discovering they were going to die. It is an interesting take on death and how to deal with death. It shows many different viewpoints on the subject of death not just from the view of Edward (Nicholson) or Carter (Freeman.) This movie really makes you think about how you live your life. The Bucket List was considered one of the most uplifting movies of the year. These men both view death in different ways. Carter in the beginning accepted death; if he did not accept death yet the movie would have been over fairly quick. You can tell he accepted death because he started writing his bucket list as a metaphorical contract that states he has given his life and is ready to die. However towards the end of the movie it seems Carter has no longer accepted death because he refuses to go back home to his family after starting the list. I think he feels this way because he thinks when he gives up on the list that will signify the end. Edward in the beginning does not accept death he refuses to deal with funeral arrangements and the passing down of his possessions. Towards the end Edward realizes that his life has been fulfilled not from completing the list but truly finding a lifelong friend in Carter. It makes you wonder how different these men’s lives would be if they were not to meet...

Abstract

...methods—chemical method, electrochemical and O/W microemulsion synthesis method were used to synthesize different structural types of PPy. The Four probe method shows that it has good conductivity (793.7 S.m-1).The TEM indicates that the PPy synthesized through O/W microemulsion has better controlled nano size and thus we chose the PPy synthesized by O/W microemulsion to interact with magnetic Co nanoparticles via ligand substitution reaction. The PPy/ magnetic nanoparticles composite material has unique structure with Co attach to the surface of PPy. Magnetic measurement shows that the after conjugation with PPy, the originally superparamagnetic cobalt nanoparticles display ferromagnetism, which proves that the PPy enhance magnetism of cobalt magnetic; the four probe method also shows the increased conductivity of the composite which proves that the cobalt nanoparticles, also...

Outbound Poem Analysis

...comment about difficulties we had. I said “We don’t know who the passengers are and why they are are train. What is the purpose of this journey?” Trying to come up for a sample metaphor she claimed was “stupid” Anna suggested, “Maybe passengers is referring to all people and its talking about life and how it always moves forward.” I asked for the meaning of the next line where a cobalt blur is described. “If this is a metaphor, for line two, what does “cobalt blur” mean?” Anna responded by posing the fact that it could be a metaphor or a real image. Nina then said “I did not understand lines 3-6 until I read the whole poem.” She explained the difficulty by saying, “If you are seeing a person picking roses obviously it [the train] is not moving fast.” I added on to this, “But then a [an image of] cobalt blur goes by really fast.” The difficulty was that if the train is moving fast, how would an image like a woman picking roses be so distinct also be out-of-focus which implies fast movement. Anna tried to explain that on a train an image can be fuzzy and then vivid and fuzzy again. If this is the case the cobalt (which is the blurry image) would transform into the vivid image of the woman and become fuzzy shortly after. This was difficult to understand because the blur should not transform into a vivid image if the train moves fast, it should move on to the next image. Anna used an analogy with a car to explain riding fast in a car images in front and behind you would be blurry but...
