As the CEO of Chipotle, it is my job to ensure all operations are ran smoothly and efficiently. It is also my responsibility to take care of my employees and ensure ethical behavior is upheld in the workplace. In order to fulfill my responsibility has Chipotle’s CEO, a code of ethics/conduct is created to reflect the company’s values and give guidance to all employees. In this essay I will discuss specific areas of our code of conduct policies and how abiding by these polices can have a positive impact of our business.
According to McGowan, “A code of ethics is a formal written document that defines the ethical standards of an organization and gives employees the information they need to make ethical decisions across a range of situations” (p 289). The first significant area of Chipotle’s code of conduct is the Ethics and Conflicts of Interest Policy. This policy states that employees “are expected to use good judgment, adhere to high ethical standards, and avoid situations that create an actual or perceived conflict between your personal interests and those of Chipotle “(chipotle.com). In other words, all employees must display integrity. Integrity is the quality of being honest and fair (Merriam-Webster.com).As a CEO, it is important that I’m able to trust my employees to make good decisions when I am not around. A second significant area of Chipotle’s code of conduct is the Protection and Use of Company Assets. This policy states that one may not use company property, information, or their position for personal gain. All employees should protect Chipotle’s assets and use them efficiently. It is important to take proper care of all assets because negligence of assets can have a negative impact on Chipotle’s profits.
A third significant area that is important is Recording and Reporting Information. Record keeping is a critical part of the business and ensures that all obligations are being met within the company. According to Chipotle.com, “all records, including employment, payroll and financial data, checks and payments, as well as other essential data, must therefore be prepared with accuracy and care” (2012).
A key step to ensure that my employees are following the code of conduct is quarterly training sessions. During these sessions, all polices are thoroughly explained. We demonstrate scenarios displaying issues regarding ethical behavior, conflict of interest, and the use of company assets. These scenarios are to ensure that employees know the correct way to handle these type of situations. We also have hands on training on completing all paperwork. During these sessions, employees are divided up depending on their position. This is to ensure each person knows the correct way to record and report transactions.
A second key step to ensure employees are following the code of conduct is to constantly enforce all polices. According to Morely, “A policy is only effective when it is enforced” (2015). At Chipotle, we hold weekly staff meetings with question-and-answer sessions to keep communication flowing both ways. These meetings boost morale in the workplace and allows any confusion regarding policies to be addressed. Those who continuously violate policy face disciplinary actions which could led to termination.
One way in which Chipotle can engage in socially responsive activities in the community is by supporting the veterans. Chipotle proudly supports the men and women serving in the military, therefore we continuously contribute to charities that supports the veterans. A second way is by showing customer appreciation. Since we value our customers, Chipotle has implemented a loyalty program to reward them. This program consist of one free meal after every tenth purchase. This motivates our customer to return and is also a way of thanking them for their business. Lastly, we created a smartphone application for Chipotle. This app allows us to inform our customers of our menu items as well as any promotions available. This application allows us to expand our business by reaching customers all over the world.
In conclusion, having a code of conduct keeps businesses flowing and implements guidelines for employees. According to McGowan, “codes of conduct work best with monitoring, enforcement, and a commitment to find solutions that work for all parties involved” (p 59, 2012). As the CEO, I respect our employees and encourage them to comply with our code of conduct polices. However, I also encourage them to present any concerns they may have so we can work together in helping Chipotle continue to grow successfully.
