First, a person with a college degree has a sense of accomplishment. When I receive an A on my Database midterm, I feel accomplished. This accomplishment showed me; I could achieve anything with dedication and hard work. Again, getting a 4.0-grade point average makes me feel like I did something right, and I feel successful. Feeling successful helps build self-confidence which, is projected in everyday life. Being invited to join the National Honor Society, called P.T.K. at UA Rich Mountain, was one of my most significant achievements. With these academic achievements, my confidence rose, and it showed in my everyday life. …show more content…
Minimum wage is $8.50 an hour, and with a college degree, a person has the capability of making more. More money means more spending and that helps the economy. Companies such as Fred's give raises with classes taken, and this is great because someone not only gets to enrich their knowledge they get financial incentives. In fact, companies like Westat, a leading data collection, and management company, require a degree before considering applicants for employment. Many companies need some sort of education past high school. Companies that require higher education include UA Rich Mountain and Baldor. A Student Portfolio is a paper or electronic collection of documents that summarizes your academic and personal accomplishments in a way that effectively communicates with academic advisors and potential employers.1 At a minimum, your portfolio should include the following: Minimum components of a Student Portfolio • an up-to-date professional résumé. • a listing of courses in your major and related fields of study. • a listing of your extra-curricular activities and any leadership positions. • documentation of your career readiness in terms of skills and learning outcomes. The purpose of a Student Portfolio is twofold — academic assessment and career readiness. 1. Academic Assessment Goal The Student Portfolio serves as an ongoing academic assessment tool that documents your learning and academic accomplishments. As you progress through a curriculum, the portfolio depicts the progress you are making in acquiring the skills and competencies necessary to be successful in lifelong career pursuits. Over time, your portfolio will become increasingly sophisticated in the range and depth of learning and accomplishments that are documented. A well-prepared Student Portfolio is a very effective way of summarizing your academic achievements in consultation with both faculty advisors and professors. 2. Why Collge Is Important to Me

...Why College is Important to Me College is important to me for a couple of reasons. The reasons that going to college are important to me are so that I can prove to myself that I am capable of completing something as challenging as college and to show my children that no matter how long it takes, you can complete your goals and dreams. At the age of sixteen I dropped out of high school. I was not being challenged, the work was boring and the drama of high school was more than I wanted to be a part of. I had dreams of becoming a model and someday having a family. I began working immediately and was very happy. At the age of 18, I became pregnant and got married and soon had two children. I don’t believe that I am a typical college student, most students are looking to further their career or make more money; to find that new career. For me, it’s not about a new job or more money, but a sense of personal accomplishment and a desire to be an example to my kids. College View advises “more than ever, attending college provides opportunities for graduates which are not as widespread to those who have not received a higher education.” I didn’t believe that a college education was important. I thought that having a job, being a mom and being a functioning part of the society was enough. Until now, it was. I now have four children and each of them are starting their futures with a college education. I want to teach my children how important a college education is. According...

Standardized Testing Informative Essay

...The first standardized tests appeared in America during World War I as a means of placing U.S. Army recruits into military roles that suited their skills. Later the psychologists that created those tests created the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT. The objective was to create a full-length test to judge the overall intelligence of a student applying to college. The ACT was later created in 1959 with a similar goal. The two tests today contain sections for reading, writing, math, and in the ACT, science. Today, standardized tests are defined as any examination that is managed and scored in a standard way. Throughout time standardized tests have been progressively changing in their measurement of individuals. Today there are two noteworthy sorts...

...RESUMES WHAT IS A RESUME? A resume is a custom designed, written summary of your background. It provides a thumbnail sketch of your education, experience, and qualifications to a prospective employer. An effective resume targets a specific type of position and relates your skills and experience to that position. WHO WRITES A RESUME? A resume is written by anyone seeking employment, both part-time and full-time. Although there are companies that provide resume-writing services, the most effective resumes are written by the job seeker--after all, who else knows you, your qualifications, and your experiences better--someone you just met, or you? WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A RESUME? A good resume (in combination with a cover letter) will provide you with an interview. The employer will select applicants on the basis of how well their skills match up with the job requirements. Sometimes, the difference between getting an interview and being placed in the “no” pile is a well put-together resume. GENERAL RESUME GUIDELINES: Length: • A one-page resume works for the recent graduate. If you have extensive work history, two pages are reasonable. Remember to limit pertinent to what is important to the current job objective. Appearance: • Developing a well organized, readable layout determines if it gets read! Direct the reader’s eyes to the format. • Avoid dense text appearance, which is difficult to read. • Use high-quality white or off-white paper--stay conservative...

...Joseph Temples Effective College English I Professor Waltman, Bradley 8/22/2013 Poetry Analysis The poem "Fisherman” by Kurt Brown is a story of a man struggling with his accomplishments or expectations, but not willing to give up. We all struggle and doubt ourselves. When it comes down to our own lives, we tend to judge ourselves harder than others do. By doing this we put unneeded stress or pressure in our lives that are not necessary. A man spends his whole life fishing in himself for something grand. It’s like a lost lunker, big enough to break all records. (1-2) (Brown) In my opinion the author is stating in our everyday lives we have a routine, searching for our best accomplishments. We are looking for one that is bigger than what we feel is expected of us. Maybe it is one that will surpass everyone’s expectations of us. But he’s only heard rumors, myths, vague promise of wonder. He’s only felt the shadow of something enormous darken his life. Or has he? (3-5) (Brown) We hear praises from others about thing we’ve done or accomplished, but do not believe that our great accomplishment exists. We feel we can do better and often judge ourselves hard; thinking that perhaps someone else has done better. Through all the praises we still feel confused or uncomfortable accepting the praise from others. Maybe it’s the shadow of other fish, greater than his, the shadow of other men’s souls passing over him. (6) (Brown) In the part of the poem, the...

...–Richard R. Wright Sr. “Sir, tell them we are rising” (Richard R. Wright Sr.) was a statement targeted to northerners that southern blacks had just been freed from slavery and were on the come up. By come up, I mean that they now could go beyond picking cotton in the fields and receive an education, join the army or do whatever they wanted to because they were free. The freeing of slaves led to great things for President Wright. He served in the army, became very successful and had a lot of involvement with National Freedom Day. He strived to make African Americans a part of history according to Kachun (285). Richard Wright Sr.’s accomplishments and hardships influence my mission statement as a future SSU graduate and complies with an analysis of National Freedom Day and why it is important. My understanding of Richard Wright Sr.’s accomplishments and hardships is that no matter where people came from or how they grew up, if they want something they should fight for it. Things are not just handed to them and to become someone special and have a legacy, it is not going to happen overnight. “If a former slave can become an educator, politician, bank entrepreneur etc.” (Wharton Alumni Magazine) anyone in this world can be successful. Everyone goes through certain things and sometimes it is hard but people can’t let that stop them. Whatever it is, they should take it as a lesson learned and move on. No one should mourn about their problems or misfortunes but see what they can do...

Factors Affecting College

...Factors Affecting College Students’ Motivation A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of requirements for the College of Arts and Sciences Major in Psychology By Imelda Tolentino Josan Alejandra Valle Charize Faith Laciste Mirriam Calimlim Arellano University-Pasig September, 2013 Chapter I Introduction Studying is said to be the primary key to achieve academic excellence, but what factors really driven students to study? Others might say that fears motivate students while others might claim that you should give them tough classes and they will pull through. Some teaching faculty would say that students are motivated because of their personal goals in life. Yes, you could ask everyone but they would just answer in different opinions. The disagreement about the sources of student motivation makes the question of academic motivation sound a great deal like that of workplace motivation. Management theory abounds with contradictory theories about what makes employees work. Maslow (1968) argued that needs drive behaviour, and that workplace (and, presumably, academic) motivation is determined by the level of the needs hierarchy at which the individual is operating. McClelland (1966) claimed instead that motivation is driven by an innate need to achieve, and Herzberg (1959) proposed that the content of the jobs themselves was the source of the elusive employee motivation. The purpose of this research was to align explanations for student motivation with classical workplace...

...Brocrick McCall Training and Development Excelsior College In today’s business world, companies looking to improve their profits and increase productivity are constantly looking for ways to boost employee performance and effectiveness. Skills development and training programs help organizations achieve these corporate objectives and enhance their overall corporate culture. “Once training requirements have been identified using needs analyses, training objectives and priorities can be established by a “gap analysis,” which indicates the distance between where an organization is with its employees capabilities and where it needs to be” (Mathis, R. & Jackson, J. 2011, p. 178). A big performance gap within the 22nd Recruiting and Retention Battalion is recruiters performing poorly. This poor performance contributes to the state not making its accession mission for the fiscal year. It is important for each Soldier assigned to know his/her formal command chain and the roles and responsibilities at each level of the recruiting organization. This enables each recruiter to comprehend how the military organizational structure works and where she/he fits into that organizational structure. Once a recruiter understands this, it enables them to understand their importance for mission accomplishment within the recruiting battalion, the Army National Guard and the United States Army. The recruiter’s team leader, 1st Sergeant, and Sergeant Major comprise the recruiting...

...English 1001- Rhetorical Analysis Essay: You Deserved Rejection! Or At Least Your Essay Did… In the article, “To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me”, Suzy Lee Weiss addresses a multitude of reasons why she believed herself along with others were not accepted into various colleges. Published on March 29, 2013, it is one of many articles Weiss has contributed to The Wall Street Journal. The Wall Street Journal viewed at wsj.com is a business focused, English language international newspaper based in New York City where her article is placed under the commentary. It is clear from the essay that being rejected from her dream school was her kairos event that prompted and gave her the motivation for this writing that is important to her. Weiss--a senior at Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh—has written this among many other articles posted in the NY Daily News and others. Presenting her thesis early in her article, Weiss creates a foundation for the six arguments she establishes in defense for her claim that colleges lied to her; however, due to her lack of specific examples, statistics, and false claims, she fails to support her argument sufficiently. In her article, Weiss strengthens her ethos and logos drawing in on her very own feelings and thoughts for the varied audience of wsj.com. With her supporting evidence, she entreats the viewers to realize the devastation caused by Ivy League colleges telling applicants to “Just be yourself”. She goes on to claim this...

...Chapter I Introduction Being in college is the most difficult phase of education. College students have to finish a specific number of units in order to graduate. These units are based from the subjects of the student’s chosen program. A college student does not only have academics to deal with. There are lots of other aspects in life such as co- and extra-curricular activities, social life, family gatherings and personal interests and hobbies. A college student: may be an officer or a member of one or many organizations; may have many engagements outside school like events, workshops, lessons, parties, gatherings and other involvements or can have preoccupations being alone. A college student also has errands and minor tasks to do and he or she may also experience problems along the way or experience sudden turn of events and eventually, time is unexpectedly consumed and it is up to the student how he or she will handle his or her duties, responsibilities and keep up with maintaining his or her academic performance. Going through college requires maximum effort and time for it will reflect in their academic performance.
