College Admissions Essay: Seventeen Years And Change

Submitted By
Words 547
Pages 3
Seventeen years and change is still coming. I have lived in San Antonio Texas my whole life, with the same parents, in the same home, with the same problems. These problems have come to shape me into the man that I am today. That being said responding correctly diversity and adapting to change is my forte. But just because I consider it my forte does not mean I enjoy it being around.
Growing up with two loving parents and a brother has always been a blessing to me. My mother and father have always provided for me growing up. Putting me through private schooling all my life, select sports teams, extra learning courses, and the list goes on. We were never rich and nothing was ever handed to us. My parents have always worked hard for what we …show more content…
I attended an amazing school with my brother who has been going there two years prior to my arrival. In the beginning of the school year everything inside and outside of school was going smooth, I made good grades and learned how to live out a great catholic lifestyle. Towards the end of the year was when my once amazing and healthy childhood started drastically going downhill. Outside of school at this time my father stopped working completely, not because he choose to, but because he was not physically healthy enough to. Throughout sophomore, junior, and now senior year nothing has changed and it is only getting worse financially. This caused me to struggle at times in and outside of school. But with a positive mindset, friends, family, and the way I was brought up as a child, I was able to persevere through all the change. Now it is just me, my mother, and father at the house. Ever since my brother left to Texas A&M University I have been the “man” of the house, doing all the work my father once did.
This whole experience has really changed my outlook on life, and has made me realize that everything in your once “amazing” life can quickly change. Through this experience I have become a very mature and independent person. I started making my own money for myself, and even for my family when needed. I believe these characteristics I have adopted through this experience have molded me into a great young man who is ready to take on any and all

Standardized Testing In Schools

...Having a test-optional policy will strengthen the diversity of colleges and open more opportunity for those who need it to be successful. A standardized test is not a proper strategy to determine whether a student should be admitted to a school or not. They do not exemplify most of the specific qualities a student could bring to college or gain in the future. Due to colleges eliminating the necessity of standardized test during the admission period, students are being accepted to schools that can properly hone the skills needed in their future, and schools that they can excel at if attended. An additional amount of schools are beginning to view personal essays, and extracurricular activities as a way to gain a better sense of person’s work...

Personal Statement

...Subject: Successful Princeton Applicant Through all of my accomplishments and disappointments, I have always been especially proud of the dedication and fervor I possess for my personal beliefs and values. Unfortunately, it has often been difficult for me to remain outwardly firm and confident in a town where most people think alike and reject exceptions. Whenever I have expressed my position as a pro-life advocate, peers have badgered, accused, and ridiculed me for simply believing in something that they scorn. Despite all the pressure, I never waive red from my belief, yet I became frustrated and began to lose the courage to publicly express my opinion on this controversial topic. To gain some insight and reassurance for myself, I attended the New Jersey Right to Life Convention in the spring of 1995. This experience uplifted me and offered great inspiration and enlightenment. At the convention I received an overwhelming amount of support and encouragement from wonderful people who advocate the very principles I believe in. This convention was so inspiring that the next day in school I was able to relate my experience to one of my biggest opponents on the subject. Also, the abundant information available at the convention enabled me to defend my position on abortion more effectively. Attending this convention accomplished two things. It proved my commitment to my belief, in that I took the initiative to strengthen and support my opinion, refusing to give up or lose heart. Unlike...

The Fate of Empire

...father was posted for a three-year tour of duty. At the age of ten he was sent to school for a year in Switzerland. These youthful travels may have opened his mind to the outside world at an early age. He entered the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich in September 1914, and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in April 1915. He served throughout the first World War in France and Belgium, being wounded three times and awarded the Military Cross. In 1920 he volunteered for service in Iraq, as a regular officer, but in 1926 resigned his commission and accepted an administrative post under the Iraq Government. In 1930, however, he signed a contract to serve the Transjordan Government (now Jordan). From 1939 to 1956 he commanded the famous Jordan Arab Legion, which was in reality the Jordan Army. Since his retirement he has published seventeen books, chiefly on the Middle East, and has lectured widely in Britain, the United States and Europe. We look back on our behaviour when we were young and think how foolish we were. In the same way our family, our community and our town endeavour to avoid the mistakes made by our predecessors. ...denigrate the importance of cognitive intelligence, and even more, the tests that measure it. I will demonstrate that not one of them says what Goleman claims it says, and many say the opposite.3 No one denies that emotional strengths and social abilities often contribute to social and occupational success. But Goleman knew two crucial facts about them that he did not tell his readers. In the introduction to Emotional Intelligence, Goleman wrote (pages xi-xii), This mapping [of emotional intelligence] offers a challenge to those who subscribe to a narrow view of intelligence, arguing that IQ is a genetic given that cannot be changed by life experience … That argument ignores the more challenging question: What can [Goleman’s italics] we change that will help our children fare better in life? What factors are at play, for example, when people of high IQ founder and those of modest IQ do surprisingly well? I...
