Outline for Final Project-Unit 8- Sharing Your Insight

I. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your life

A. The college experience is one of growth and discovery. The first advice and best advice I can offer you is to keep an open mind. College is nothing like high school, so try not to compare the two. You don’t have someone watching over you all the time; your parents aren’t going be there to walk you through everything. You have to become independent and strong minded to make it.

B. This is the rest of your life. The choices you make now, from this point on, are the ones that will effect how you will be in the future. From the job you pick, to your daily routines, and just life in general. Whatever career you want to do, or learn, your life will revolve around that. So pick wisely and have an idea of what drives you, what awakens your passion for growth and learning. Then, take that knowledge and head in the right direction.

II. The Road to Self-Discovery

A. Self Discovery, I know it sounds scary to actually have to analyze yourself, but you are your worst enemy, and also your best friend. You hold the key to discovering who you are and who you want to be. With college, it is important to analyze your strengths and skills, so you can know what your good at and what you may need to work on. I learned through the Kuder Assessments what job was best for my personality, values, and career goals. I found out I am a perfect match for a chemist job, or a political person. Two careers I never in my life thought about, yet they are a perfect match for me. I never thought answering a few questions could give me such insight on who I was. But it opened my eyes to new career options I had never

College Life

...As colleges weigh this year’s round of applications, high school seniors are not the only anxious ones. Just as nervously, colleges — facing a financial landscape they have never seen before — are trying to figure out how many students to accept, and how many students will accept them. Typically, they rely on statistical models to predict which students will take them up on their offers to attend. But this year, with the economy turning parents and students into bargain hunters, demographics changing and unexpected jolts in the price of gas and the number of applications, they have little faith on those models. “Trying to hit those numbers is like trying to hit a hot tub when you’re skydiving from 30,000 feet,” said Jennifer Delahunty, dean of admissions and financial aid at Kenyon College in Ohio. “I’m going to go to church every day in April.” In response, colleges are trying new methods to gauge which applicants are serious about attending: Wake Forest, in North Carolina, is using Webcam interviews, while other colleges say they are scrutinizing essays more closely. And they are making more vigorous appeals to try to convince parents and students who will be offered admission in April that theirs is the campus to choose. But mostly, they are guessing: Will pinched finances keep students closer to home? Will those who applied in December be feeling too poor to accept in May — or show up in August? Colleges have been in the catbird seat for the past decade or...

Life of a College Athlete

...The Life of a Student Athlete in Another Country Ever since I was a little boy, I wanted be a student athlete in America. I was just a young child from Australia with a dream. It was all I wanted: it was plan A, B and C. However, this determination and dream blinded me from reality, and now that I am here it is a real shock to the system. It is not all glitz and glamour like portrayed on television and in movies. Being a student athlete in another country comes with a lot of struggles. It is a constant juggling act trying to perform both in the classroom and on the court as well as trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, all whilst being on the other side of the world from my support network, friends, family and comfort zone.  As student athletes, we are always told that student comes first, and it is true that in order to maintain my spot on the team, I have to perform in the classroom first. For the average students all they see is that I am on the basketball team, and the perks that come with that. People do not see just how demanding the lifestyle is: all they see are the rewards that come with being a student athlete, and it creates assumptions. Fellow students assume that everything is handed to us: people see me falling asleep in class and assume that I was up partying the night before, or people see me missing classes for games and think that I am lucky, but they do not see the extra work and time I have to put in to catch up. They do not see that when I get home from...

Go to College Before Life Happens

...A college education opens doors for many opportunities for those who pursue one. Obtaining a college education is not an easy feat, especially if it is postponed until after you have a spouse, children and a full time job. We as parents need to realize the positive influence we can have on our children’s future plans and pursuits. Most parents want the best for their children; they want to see them succeed in life. One way to help ensure their success is by influencing their decision to pursue a college education when there is less distractions in their life, which is right after high school. If our children choose not to attend college after high school, life might become so occupied with other things it may postpone or prevent our children from obtaining a college degree. Speaking as a parent who first entered the work force and started a family, I understand how difficult it is attending college in the midst of raising a family. The stress is real, and the pressure is felt by all, when a working mother or father begins to obtain a college education. Granted, there are benefits to taking a year off after high school in order to regroup and relax, but the risk of not returning is highly possibly. Attending college right out of high school is the preferable option, and we as parents should encourage our children to make this most sensible choice. College conversations with our children should start early. Many parents begin to discuss college with their children around...

What to and What Not: Adapting to College Life

...The transition of High school to College is a very challenging experience for us students. It includes establishing new identities and managing new emotions. College requires us to have a strong ability to adapt. According to Organista, a blogger, “Moving into a new environment and meeting new people means leaving everything that’s familiar. The past may have been great, something that’s hard to leave behind; or maybe it was more difficult, you struggled just to get through, and what you’re facing may be a welcome change”. We can make these new changes as an inspiration to be better. We may encounter stress and anxiety, but we have to surpass it. We may consider stressors such as figuring out new living arrangements, redefining your role in the community, managing finances, and long distance relationship with your parents, how you will deal with your new classmates, and even your roommates can mean extra demands that you may not have been prepared for. Adapting to changes, learning new coping mechanisms, or revisiting some familiar ones is all important strategies that can help you feel grounded. People would always quote, “you have to dance with the rhythm of the environment” which is true. We have to adapt to our new environment. Life is survival of the fittest. But how will we overcome anxiety, stress, and adapting to college life? First, we got to have a good time management. By having an organized schedule, you can stay on track of your priorities and tackle each...

College Admissions Essay: The Autobiography Of My Life

...When I take a look back on my life story and wonder what to write an autobiography about, my thoughts focus around control and excellence. Control has been something I have craved since a young age, however not only control over other people and situations, but control over my own life. When I was younger I didn’t have a say over what happened to me, where I moved, or what my situation in life was going to be like, and that deeply bothered me. Craving control is in turn what has inspired me to strive for excellence. As a kindergartener, there was not much I had a say in about my life, but no one had a say in the way I acted and what I could do for myself. So, I dove into education. The way I acted at school was the one thing I had for myself, and I decided that I would strive to be the best so that then I could have control over my life and what surrounded me....

College Admissions Essay: The Experience That Changed My Life

...Socrates declared that to understand the mysteries of the universe, one must know himself, and there’s no better tutor than life itself. It’s true that life teaches us in mysterious ways, and often what we expect is not what we get. But what stays with us is the experience obtained during the process. We can learn from it and strive for a better future, or we can blame others for being the reason of our failure and drown ourselves in the pool of sorrow. There have been many experiences in my life that have shaped me into the character that I am now, especially this experience. It all began last school year when I joined Model United Nations. I thought it would be a great society to join to learn more about international issues, ideal for someone like me, an International Baccalaureate Candidate, who aims to bring changes to mankind. Sadly, I realized many of the members were not active. Clearly demonstrated through the small number of delegates that partook in last year’s major conference. Although, we won a golden gavel, I was disappointed about the number of attendees. As the sands of time...

The Prevalence of Facebook: Help Youngsters to Adapt to the College Life (Extract)

...Segueing to Chickering and Reisser’s next vector, “Developing mature interpersonal relationships” is quite a logical step for students to make as they move into adulthood. Whereas students in high school or recently removed might have had extremely limited exposure to diverse populations, the college environment readily presents a great deal of new types of people to the student to grow to know and understand. Through the exercise of these new friends and companions, a student is able to decide with whom he is going to build long-lasting relationships. The advent of Facebook allows for students to more closely examine the profiles of their friends and groups to determine with whom they will be more compatible in the long-term, mature level. Facebook’s impact on students holds true in one final vector of Chickering and Reisser’s theory “Establishing identity.” While one could argue the development of student identities takes place during the creation of a profile, the development of the students’ true identity is something that a profile is likely dependent upon. A student’s Facebook profile will not stay the same throughout the duration of a student’s career, but instead grows and changes with the student as they move along a path of self-discovery. It is through the assimilation of friends, relationships, activities, experiences, education and other factors that a student truly defines a sense of self that can be reflected both corporally and digitally. It is in this vector...

College Admissions Essay: This Is My Life

...This Is My Life There is not much about me that I would like to share because I’m just a person that keeps my feelings to myself than to express them. I’ve always felt like this since I was in elementary school. At a very young age, I was repeatedly told that "whatever goes on in this house, stays in this house" with that being said, I just didn’t open up or talk to anyone like everybody else does. My family think that I need counseling or some sort of therapy especially anger management but I always ignore them because I don’t see anything wrong with me. One thing that I can recount on a significant event that changed my perspective was when my mother got severely injured by a man she spent 10 years of her life with and in my eyes, who I saw as a father figure. I know I'm not the...

...Zitian Lin Due date: August 1st, 2013 The Street Fight illustrates Cory Booker, an impressive graduate of Stanford and Yale Law School and a Rhodes Scholar runs for mayor of Newark in 2002 against the 16-year incumbent and old-fashioned politician Sharp James. The campaign, as the titles refers, denotes that two people in the streets of Newark use different ways to show their leadership and power to win. Leadership is a process that could be practiced by everyone. Moreover, a leader asks people to share his goals. He allows conflicts to be stated by the people and he accepts as well as explains with what is the reality to those goal alignments. There are three steps that leaders can practice in order to gradually achieve their goals. Firstly, a leader must articulate a vision, which means the leader must show his people where he is going to take them. In the very beginning of the documentary, Cory Booker argues that Newark, New Jersey needs a new mayor because there has been no change in this city under mayor Sharp James who takes over the position since 1986. Moreover, Booker hope to build a more open and honest government. This city needs a new leadership, which Booker can bring this here. Secondly, a good leader should define the reality by letting his community of followers knowing where they are right now, where they will go, and when they will reach the goal. When this documentary was made, residents in Newark area were still living in poor neighborhoods with poor schools...
