I wouldn’t say the last nail has been driven into the coffin on the George-Anne’s recent move to reduce publishing one edition each week, but the coffin is right outside in the hallway. Being a part time student for the last six years I have seen several changes in the paper that seem to indicate the paper is in a downward spiral. It used to be I would encounter enthusiastic students handing out the paper at the stadium bus stop Tuesdays and Thursdays, now there are stacks of bound up papers that never get unwrapped, the same situation near Lake Side Cafeteria. I have seen maintanince people loading the papers in trash bags, while still encased in their plastic straps. I have to ask why, is it that current students don’t read the paper, are

Persuasive Speech: Should College Students Take The ACT And/Or SAT?

...I. Attention Getter: Students across the United States stand by their mailboxes, or in modern days, constantly hit the refresh button, anxiously waiting for the score that will seal their academic fate. II. Connection to Audience: Raise your hand if you ever took the ACT and/or SAT? Everyone in here should have because most colleges require either or in order to be accepted and admitted into the school, including Mizzou. I myself took the ACT three times (credibility). Therefore, we have all experienced the heavy amount of pressure, the nerve-racking time limits, and the “oh my gosh I only have more five minutes but two whole columns left to bubble” feeling. But most importantly, we all understand how much college admission hinges on how well we perform on these standardized tests. III. Thesis Statement and Preview: However, standardized testing has long-standing problems of inaccuracy, inequalities, and inducing test anxiety which I will later discuss in detail. Because of these flaws, the college...

How to Prepare a Persuasive Speech

...How to Prepare a Persuasive Speech Public Speaking Tips for College Students Aug 19, 2009 Carol Rzadkiewicz When it comes time for students to deliver a persuasive speech, if they follow certain guidelines, they can deliver a speech that is both powerful and effective. Students are required to take public speaking in college as part of any undergraduate program of study; and of all the speeches students will be called upon to deliver, the most difficult and challenging will probably be the persuasive speech. There are steps, however, that students can take to help them prepare an effective, perhaps even outstanding, persuasive speech. Choose a Speech Topic The first step is to select a topic. When it comes to selecting one, though, students should keep two things in mind: • Since they will be expected to conduct research, preparation will be far less tedious if they select a topic in which they are truly interested and about which they would like to know more. • Ideally, they should select a topic that deals with an issue about which they genuinely care, for if they care, their passion will be evident and passion often helps sway an audience to accept a speaker’s opinion or argument. Sample Persuasive Speech Topics Although there are countless possibilities when it comes to topics for persuasive speeches, a few that students might consider include the following: • Should capital punishment be abolished? • Should marijuana be legalized? • Does intelligent...

Gay Vs. Loman Convocation Speech On Gay Marriage In America

...Authors of both speeches, Gay marriage in America and Georgia tech freshman convocation speech, are persuasive in their own way. The first one is about gay marriages. The speaker talks with confidence as he is homosexual and has experience of bad treatment from other people. Thus, he is more capable to attract the audience attention. Not that emotionally, he describes awfulness of treatment to homosexuals describing the situation when two partners of the same sex have no opportunity to be with each other to the last minutes of live. His speech was well organized and logical from the very beginning to the end. The second speech is mostly based on emotions. Homw School vs Public School

...It seems unfair that you were handed such a poor topic for a persuasive speech as Anit-Homeschooling surely is. It’s kind of hard to be ‘persuasive’ without facts and statistics to back up your (assigned) stance. And, unfortunately (for the sake of your assignment, at least), the only *statistics* and *facts* out there put homeschooling in a decidedly favorable light. What you *will* find are mere opinion pieces arguing against homeschooling. However, keep in mind these articles provide no substantiating evidence to support their “anti-homeschooling” stance. Such articles, unfortunately (for your assignment, at least), are based on mere myths--some of which have been expressed right HERE by some of your responders. To wit: A) quote:“Home schooled people [will] be passed over for someone that has been through a school that has testing standards as well as requirments (sic) and guidlines (sic) for the teachers them selves.” Wrong. Homeschooled students consistently outperform public school students on standardized tests. [http://www.academicleadership.org/empric... and elsewhere] Moreover, it is no secret that our public schools are failing and that we are far behind other industrialized nations in academic achievement. Cicero

...What are some of the qualities of effective persuasive writing? How do Cicero’s strategies help to prepare us to address specific audiences? Please give examples to support your answers Rhetorical devices have proven to be quite useful in effective pieces of persuasive writing. Eloquence and assiduous choice of words, coupled with the principles rhetoric, can augment the persuasive nature of a piece of writing. To be effective, persuasive writing must contain purpose, context and exigency, tone, and a targeted audience. Of those qualities, a targeted audience is one the most essential. Exerting effort to persuade the wrong group of people would be a waste of time and effort, and most likely be ineffective in persuasion. In the height of the Roman republic, Cicero crafted many orations and pieces of writing with the principles of rhetoric. In his work On Rhetorical Invention, he stresses the importance of sculpting an argument based on the audience. Cicero believed that there was several causes a speaker must make based on their audience: honorable, astonishing, low, doubtful, and the obscure. For example, “The obscure cause addresses those who do not fully understand the issues involved” (Austin, 571). With this in mind, a speaker can adjust the content of their speech. If a writer knows how their audience is predisposed to respond to their work, they will know how to change their wording accordingly. Cicero explained that, “In the kind of cause I have called obscure, it...

Evaluation Essay

...am a student at a Community College. I am currently enrolled in a speech class. In this speech class, we were required to present a persuasive speech. This fourteenth of November, I evaluated a speech given by a classmate, Karina Cervantes. Ms. Cervantes chose to speak about Electronic Distractions while driving. My evaluation of her speech will determine its effectiveness. If the speaker hopes to give an effective speech, they must know how to choose a topic. Topic selection is an important element to giving a successful speech. In selecting a topic, the speaker should be required in knowing the audience’s likes and dislikes. Doing so should help the speaker catch the audience’s attention. As mentioned before, Ms. Cervantes chose Electronic Distractions while driving as her topic. Ms. Cervantes spoke about the dangers of being distracted while driving. She was able to provide both problems and solutions of her topic. Her speech was sturdy as she gave her own real life experience, and consequences that appeared within. Being organized while preparing and giving a speech helps both the speaker and the audience. To have an organized speaker helps the audience maintain the information more clearly. An organize speech not only looks professional, but also helps the speaker follow a guide. Ms. Cervantes followed a guideline and organized her speech dividing it in sections. Her introduction had an exceptional attention getter. Starting off her speech with the words, “Could you imagine...

Political Speech

...One of President Reagan's purposes of his speech given at Moscow State University in 1988, was to lecture the Soviet people about freedom and its relationship to economic progress. He also said "It is a message of peace and good will and hope for a growing friendship and closeness between our two peoples." I believe he used techniques such as logic; pathos, appeals based on emotions; and ethos, appeals based on the speaker's credibility. "Pathos is an effective way of arousing passions is in appeal to values. Ethos uses trust, and focuses first on the speaker, showing the speaker as a person of integrity and good character" (changingminds.org, n.d.). President Reagan's reputation is quite known across the world. He has a lot of creditability being President of the United States, he witnessed first hand of these new technologies as well as the different countries coming together. I do believe that President Reagan was connected to his audience. At the beginning of his speech he had said "zhelayu vam uspekha" which means "I wish you success" in Russian. For me, it feels like he said that in their native language, because it was his way of showing respect for them and their country. He also included his wife's regards to the people of Moscow State University and also a message from our country stating "It is a message of peace and good will and hope for a growing friendship and closeness between our two peoples." This speech took place in May of 1988 and then the technology they...

Ted Ferris: Rhetorical Analysis

...Ferris, a podcaster, and author, delivers a persuasive speech on a very interesting concept on why should you define your fears, instead of goals. The specific purpose of his speech, is to inform the audience how important it is to be in control of your fears, learn to manage your fears and face them head on by setting by a plan of action. His target audience was college students and business owners. In his speech, he mentions how in his college days he was suicidal because he couldn't handle his fears of failure and rejection. He was very clear about his thoughts on suicide, and a speech coming from a former college student who contemplated suicide is a very powerful message for his target audience. He goes on to say that in his business, he took time away from his business to take a much needed vacation in order to unwind, recharge, and learn to distress from daily obstacles. Similarly, the message to business owners is the same concept, those who don't take risks for fear of loss or failure of making the wrong decisions that can impact their goal setting ways, will always face the fears without taking action....

Speaker Evaluation

...Speaker Evaluation I attended “The Speak Up!!” event at the little theatre in Chabot College. It was on May 15, 2014 at 6:00pm. The Chabot College Forensics Team hosted this event. The stage where the speakers were performing was in the center of the theatre. There were rows of seats surrounding three sides of the stage. The audience was mostly a young crowd of Chabot students. The audience seemed to enjoy the speeches. The Duo Interpretation of Literature speech seemed to be the crowd’s favorite. There were a total of six speeches through out the event. My favorite speech was delivered by Franciska Karpovich. She delivered a Persuasive Speech about Gender Shaming. The speech focused on “Slut Shaming”. She spoke about the psychological effects of Slut Shaming. The purpose of her speech was to persuade her audience to boycott stores like Victoria Secret and Abercrombie and Fitch for over sexualizing young girls. She also suggested for schools to start teaching boys how to treat girls. Karpovich claims that girls are bullied for drinking too much and that they are embarrassed of their sexuality. She used current issues about boys taking advantage of girls while they were intoxicated as evidence to support her claims. She talked about people taking sexual assault as a joke because the victims are accused of provoking the boys. According to Korpavich, people think promiscuous girls are worthless. She blames the media for sexualizes girls and eventually leads to slut shaming. ...
