College Student Should Not Have to Fund Their School Expenses After high school, did you ever fear the words, “part-time job?” I think majority of graduates do; however, people like me, and many others work their life away before even beginning high school. In the article, “College and Allowance,” Silverman explains, “I know there is an allowance in my future when I head to college in a couple of years.” (Silverman 261) Silverman received an allowance because her brother, who attends Duke, did also. Although many college students today expect handouts from their parents, many of us are not as privileged to receive that same treatment, and with that comes self-responsibility. I know I could have been a better scholar had I not had two steady jobs and tried to be a “social butterfly” as well. Jobs can consume much of a student’s time when they allow it to and can highly affect your grades in the negative direction. From my person experience, students shouldn’t have to put themselves through school because being employed hinders academic performance.
If you are going to make a commitment to be a student, you should push that priority to the top of the totem pole. As a previous college student, a full-time mother and employee, I know being a student is definitely a challenge. In my previous experience, I found myself putting my job in front of my studies and not to mention that my home-life was a hindering factor as well. Yes, I was making money, living comfortably, but I was not going to achieve a college degree by putting these factors first. After working late hours and coming home to homework, sleep deprivation became a factor as well. Working students can’t be good scholars when they miss class by accidently sleeping in because of the long night before.
Students who work full-time are more likely

How College Students Manage Their Allowances

...Learn the Most Important Reasons to Save Money   By Miriam Caldwell Money in Your 20s Expert You may be asking yourself why is there so much pressure to save money. If you have enough to pay for everything you need, why should you worry about putting any aside each month? There are a variety of reasons to begin saving money. Different people save for different reasons. You can start by saving ten percent of your income each month. Here are seven reasons that you may consider saving your money. Eddie Hironaka/ Photographer's Choice/ Getty Images 1 . Save for Emergency Funds It is important to have an emergency fund set aside to cover unexpected expenses. This could cover an unexpected car repair, your emergency appendectomy or a sudden job loss. Ideally your emergency fund should be about three to six months of your expenses. If you are just starting out you should put aside at least $1000.00 for this. In addition to your emergency fund you need to make sure you have a plan and good insurance in place to help you survive the unexpected financial events in your life.  2 . Save for Retirement Another important reason to save money is your retirement. The sooner you start saving for retirement, the less you will have to save in the future. You can put your money to work for you. As you continue to contribute overtime you will be earning more interest on the money you have, then you put in each month. You should at least be contributing up to your employer's match and eventually...

Knowledge and Perceived Factors Related to Smoking Habits of College Students at Selected Departments on a Private School in Iloilo City

... as they enter college. Aside from looking for ways to quit smoking, researchers have also conducted surveys and numerous studies on what causes most students to start smoking. Furthermore, they’ve observed that student’s habits and behaviour can determine attitudes and reasons why they currently smoke. It is essential to find out more about the reasons and compulsiveness of the college smoker in order to help the smoker cope with situations that cause them to smoke. College students have had lower smoking rates than people the same age who are not in college, but the gap is narrowing. It shrunk from 20.0% in 1980 to 10.0% by 1999 (Halperin, 2002). Surprisingly, most of the people who start smoking in college only smoke socially and when around others. Most of those who exclusively smoke during parties do not even consider themselves as smokers (Kimberly Waters 2010). The rest who were smokers before they entered college are mostly the ones that smoke cigarettes habitually and by themselves (Patterson, F 2004). For many students, smoking is synonymous to college life. Most college students are bound to enjoy partying and found freedom when they reach the legal drinking age. Many develop the habit of smoking when they are drinking. Students may believe that smoking calms them during high-stress situations like class workload, earning money while at school and social difficulties (Ireland, Jae. 2010). Social statuses were a factor in why students smoke. Areas where...

Personal Responsibility

... We would be feckless. This paper will touch on how personal responsibility should be taught to children, how it can be used toward college success, and how to apply it to the work environment. How personal responsibility should be taught to children First, personal responsibility is something that needs to be taught to children. Parents should give their children chores to have them pull their own weight. They should take out the trash every week, wash dishes, mow the lawn; do something of importance that helps out around the home. Children have wastes so they should empty the trash cans. They dirty the dishes with food, so they should wash them. They need to be taught to take of their home, so they need to mow or do some gardening. Of course, the little ones probably will not like it because it will take them out of their comfort zone, but it is all about teaching them values and character. Parents should do this so their children can learn personal responsibility and be prepared for when they get out on their own. Furthermore, personal responsibility can be taught to children by giving them allowances. It teaches them to save money and how to budget. As soon as a child is old enough to know that he or she needs money in exchange for things wanted, that is the time to start an allowance. With that, parents should discuss what the allowance will cover, consequences of wastefulness, and when to give to charity. Children need to be taught that the parents will pay for the basics...

...I. Introduction Recently, we’ve noticed that students spend most of their time doing recreational activities. They are convinced that we should enjoy the last days of our high school life. This research will help understand the connection between their temptations—internet, social-networking sites, TV, movies, and music—and their studies. II. The Statement of the Problem Our focus is about the study habits of the students of SLCV—particularly of St. Vincent. We noticed that they are always out to entertain themselves, and that usually concerns the amount of allowance they are given. We want to know: How are the grades they receive when they don’t really spend a certain amount of time studying? How much allowance do they receive? Where do students spend their allowance? These are the questions we want to answer through our research. III. The Significance of the Study A majority in our community are unemployed. Those are usually the ones who went easy along when they were in their last years of schooling. This research will help in pointing out the students who will need more focus in their grades, and in the process, discover new methods of motivation for them to better discipline themselves into putting more work into their studies. IV. Theoretical Framework Some of the theories we based this research on: The first is, we observe that students are convinced that since they have made it to the graduation year that they will actually be graduating. They believe...

Implication of Gender and Social Status to Food Allotment of College Students (Introduction Part)

...of Gender and Social Status of College Students to their Food Allotment Population: All college students in the University Belt Sample: Select only five universities, 100 students for each of the five universities Introduction College years are imperative in shaping one’s future. This is the time when students give their best shot in everything and become conscious of the consequences of their deeds because they want to secure life after college. During those years, students do not get the usual time of sleep that they should have. Most of their time is spent in studying for exams, doing loads of school work, attending late classes, and socializing. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health (one of the world’s foremost medical research centers), college students are one of the most sleep-deprived populations. Sleep deprivation has been attributed to different conditions such as weight gain. Sleep researchers from the University of Colorado have found out that staying up late and getting just five hours of sleep, increases a person’s metabolism. Particularly, based on the findings published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in March 2013, sleep-deprived participants burn an extra 111 calories a day. Naturally, this calls for more food intake. As one of the most sleep-deprived populations, college students also have higher food consumption. This means that a relatively large part of their allowance is used up for food. This research...

The Level of Involvement in Smoking and Drinking Among High School Students in Cotabato

...CHAPTER I Introduction It seems to be a "coming of age thing" when a student goes to teenage life and encounters vices such as drinking and smoking is very rampant nowadays. Such vices cannot be ignored anymore as to the more students seem to be detaching from their spare time or even they intend to cut classes just for this so called vices, they seem to be enjoying freedom too much. A student may be influenced to be involved in any of the stated variables. High School is far different from being a college student. A person will have a new life when one goes to college. New environment which one has to adapt, new set of friends which one have to treat nice, and new subjects or topics that one has to study based on what course you will get. Although drinking, smoking, and drug-use for some usually result in adverse health consequences, there are some perceived benefits or advantages of these behaviors particularly from the point of view of the adolescents and youths. Adolescents may view drinking and smoking as privileges of adults and may want to engage in them to feel grown up and to present themselves as adults to others. Some of the reasons given are: the availability of cigarettes at home, parents being model of smoking and drinking behavior and consequently parents lack the credibility as advocates for non-smoking or non-drinking.(Aroyo 2001) Smoking and drinking are two of the most important risk factors explaining early mortality, accounting for an estimated...

Determinants of Study Habits

...AFFECTING THE HOURS SPENT BY CBAA STUDENTS ON STUDYING REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Success in school is not so much determined by sheer intelligence as knowing how to study. Studying is a skill. Being successful in school requires a high level of study skills. Students must first learn these skills, practice them and develop effective study habits in order to be successful. Very often the study habits and practices developed and used in high school do not work for students in college. Good study habits include many different skills: time management, self-discipline, concentration, memorization, organization, and effort. Desire to succeed is important, too( TermpaperWarehouse.com). College students have many obstacles to overcome in order to achieve their optimal academic performance. It takes a lot more than just studying to achieve a successful college career. Different stressors such as time management, financial problems, sleep deprivation, social activities, and for some students even having children, can all pose their own threat to a student’s academic performance as well as the hours they spend on studying (Womble, 2004). Study habits are the ways that students study- the habits that they have formed during their school years. Study habits can be good ones, or bad ones. Good study habits include being organized, keeping good notes, reading the textbook, listening in class, and working every day. Being organized means the student can easily access his or her school...
