...| It Is My Responsibility To Be A College Success | What I Need To Do To Achieve Success As A College Student | | | There is a correlation between personal responsibility and college success because a student has to be willing to put forth the effort required to achieve a successful college career, develop relationships with instructors, and choose what type of success they want to have throughout their college profession. | When thinking about the phrase, personal responsibility, several different definitions come to my mind. It means taking accountability for my own welfare. Personal responsibility can signify that I am responsible for the choices that I make in my life. I can go on and on about different ways that this phrase can be interpreted. However, I think it would be best if I began by breaking down the phrase into two parts, and deciphering each word. Let us start with the word, personal. Merriam-Webster defines personal, in its adjective form, as “done in person without the intervention of another”. The word, responsibility means “the state at which one is held accountable for one’s conduct and obligations”. [ (Encyclopedia Britannica Company, 2012) ] If we were to take both of these definitions and combine them, you would get my definition of personal responsibility. A person demonstrates personal responsibility when s/he is liable for any actions that they perform, and any choices that they choose to make. This definition not only places responsibility...

...students of any age whom are learning and developing their minds. However, when the discussion constitutes that of “college success”, personal responsibility plays a much larger role. Many factors contribute to a person’s eventual success in college. The student has to take full responsibility for his or her success. While families and instructors will have some effect on a student’s success, each individual is personally responsible in his or her achievements in college. As Michael Korda, editor-in-chief of Simon & Schuster once said "Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibility . . . . In the final analysis, the one quality that all successful people have is the ability to take on responsibility" (Quotes on Responsibility). II. What Personal Responsibility means to me So now that now we have an understanding on how having personal responsibility is extremely important, we need to go over how personal responsibility works, how it ties in to college success and how motivation plays an integral part in both. For example, all throughout elementary, middle, and high school you always had someone on your back about homework assignments, projects, exams and so on and so forth right? Whether it was your parents or teachers, you had all the opportunities in the world in order to succeed. However, once you finally reached your freshmen year in college, or adulthood rather, half of the resources that you once had at your disposal disappeared, and for the most part...

Mastering the subject or skill does not happen overnight, but requires concerted effort and repetition over time. Inability to apply concepts to different situations: Learning something new requires going beyond the facts. To truly understand a concept you must be able to apply it. Until you have a thorough understanding and are able to recognize its application in a new situation, you don't have a true understanding. College-level work calls for the application of concepts in new situations. Inability to complete tasks: Everyone gets "stuck" sometimes. The wise person seeks assistance. Work through the task and identify the area that is giving you problems, then seek appropriate assistance. Fear of failure: Failure is a fact of life. ...responsibility. In contrast, there are those who accept their responsibility and succeed far beyond their expectations. Throughout this essay I will describe the personal responsibilities I have and how their association will ensure successful completion of my college education. My own definition of personal responsibility is the ability to do positive things for myself and taking full responsibility for my life. For many adults, personal responsibilities are endless, just about every adult has bills and for those like me, with a spouse and dependents, those personal responsibilities are much greater. Paying the mortgage and bills on time, keeping food on the table and providing whatever other needs are not just things you would do, but are now personal responsibilities. When I get out the bed in the morning to go to work regardless of how I feel takes responsibility, because I have to maintain a career in order to handle all of my financial obligations. Even though I will try my best, things still go wrong in life and I think one of the best things about taking personal responsibility is taking ownership for the mistakes I make and build a stronger foundation from that point. The relationship between personal responsibility and college success can be compared to the relationship between a job and...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility In today’s academic society, I believe that personal responsibility is the key to great success. The first step to this however is, we have to define personal responsibility. What does having personal responsibility mean, how do we define it in our lives? I believe being personally responsible goes hand in hand with being accountable for your actions. The follow up question for that will be; what is being “accountable”? “Much of the academic literature on accountability is rather disconnected, as many authors set out to produce their own specific definition of accountability.” (Bovens, 2010, para. 1) With accountability used so loosely in language, we have to make a decision as to its meaning. For me accountability is the definition for success. Whatever my choices are in school, I have to be responsible for them. If the decisions I make during the years I attend college are responsible and I hold myself accountable to be successful, there is no limit to what I will be able to achieve. Career Student Personal responsibility will lead to more substantive decisions in your career. I have never met anyone that their goal in life is to be a career student. That being said, some students do feel like their whole life has been spent in school. If for such a long period of time, you are in school, why would you choose to not be successful? Having personal responsibility for your decisions will help ensure that you do not truly spend your entire...

...shortfalls, challenges, and successes, then learning to adapt and overcome all that is necessary to become who or what you would like to be. College students are faced with many challenges as well as having to balance work, school and personal responsibilities. I believe to be successful you need to identify your challenges and plan how to overcome them. I believe the key to being successful in anything is to know the challenges you are up against and planning how to get around these challenges for success. This idea can be applied to any aspect of your life – from planning to buy a house, getting a pet or for me, continuing my college education. The main challenges for me are the time requirements and balancing the stress of school/work/personal time. I believe that for me to achieve my goals I need to manage my time properly. Furthermore, I have to be able to understand how to best deal with the pressure that comes with school. The various deadlines that have to be met will increase my stress levels. If I don’t manage my stress levels I will most likely become overwhelmed and start to fall back in my studies. The decision for me to return to college was not a decision that I came to quickly or easily. Earlier in life I went to college off and on after high school because I felt it was what I had to do. My parents were encouraging with college but not overly so and I didn’t feel that overwhelming urge to get a degree. I began working full time after high school to support myself...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility This essay will explain the difference and the relationship in personal responsibility and college success. It will also explain some examples of personal responsibilities and college success. At the end it will include a plan to practice personal responsibilities that will lead to college success. Personal Responsibility is when a student is being held responsible for everything they do like their job, finances, relationships, school, and family. As children we are taught to be responsible, it is as we grow into adults that we learn personal responsibility so we can be successful for not only college success but for our everyday living success. Also personal responsibility occurs when one finally accepts the truth that they have to be responsible for their own actions. Most of the time when we make a mistake we find a way to point the finger at someone other than ourselves. Instead of pointing fingers we can accept responsibility by saying it was me, or I am sorry I made a mistake. This would make you a better person because it takes a stronger person to say I am sorry, than to put the blame on someone else. I would rather that person be in charge of things instead of someone that only cares about him or herself. I believe confidence is the main key to any success. If you have confidence in yourself you can achieve anything you set your mind to and it gives you the strength to say the things like I was wrong and leads you to succeed. Some...

...Literature Review Investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and academic success Cheng Zhang PSY 301 LAB Jason Wallin 23/10/2013 Literature Review: Investigating the relationship between self-efficacy and academic success During the past decades, the importance of self-efficacy has been receiving much attention from many scholars from a variety of research fields such as psychology and education. Scholars want to find the relationship of self-efficacy and the outcome of academic performance. According to the self-efficacy theory proposed by Bandura in the late 1970s, self-efficacy is the individual’s perceived capability to perform a given duty successfully (Bandura, 1977). As Bandura stated in a more recent article, the belief that a person possesses the power to generate expected effects by his or her actions is the fundamental basis of any factors that serve as guides and motivators. Without such a belief, it is quite hard for a person to find sufficient incentive to take actions or overcome difficulties (Bandura, 2002, p. 2). Pajaresand Schunk(2001) summarized that Bandura’s social cognitive theory emphasizes the important role of self-efficacy belief in the process where individuals make decisions and ultimately take actions to pursue their goals. Alternatively speaking, it is more likely for people to engage in activities when they feel confident and have competence than those that they do not. Meanwhile, according to Hackett and Betz (1981), expectations...

Personal Responsiblity

...Personal Responsibility The last twelve months of my life have been a sea of change. I decided to leave my job of six years, undertake a weight loss journey and pursue a Bachelor’s degree. I thought about doing all those things year after year but never did. One day, it really hit me, my job wasn’t opening doors for me, my education was lacking and I was unhealthy. As a result my quality of life was suffering. In order to gain new opportunities and improve my quality of life I needed to take personal responsibility. In the following few paragraphs I will state my definition on personal responsibility, describe the relationship as I see it between personal responsibility and college success, and outline my plan to practice personal responsibility during my education. My Interpretation of Personal Responsibility Responsibility as defined by Merriam-Webster (2012) as “moral, legal, or mental accountability” In my opinion, personal responsibility has many facets. Personal responsibility is the ability to take care of yourself by means of being healthy, managing emotions and keeping a sound mind. In addition personal responsibility is about being accountable to yourself, your family, and your career by making decisions which are not necessarily easy but will help you in your journey to new opportunities, achieve college success and overall well-being. Personal responsibility is also about taking ownership and being accountable for your life choices and not blaming family...
