Personal responsibility and college success are one in the same. According to Merriam and Webster, responsibility is the quality or state of being morally, legally or mentally accountable. To be a successful college student, one must be responsible and held accountable for one’s thoughts, words and actions. Self-advocacy is an individual’s ability to convey effective skills of communication relating to one’s own interests. This entails making sound decisions, taking responsibility for those decisions and knowing your strengths and weaknesses.

Self-advocacy is an individual’s ability to convey effective skills of communication relating to one’s own interests. The communicator needs to be an effective listener as well. Not just do all of the talking. Allow whomever is talking to present their views and decide what you would like to take from what they are saying and make it pertain to you. Self-advocacy is also speaking up for yourself and learning how to assert yourself effectively. It’s making decisions that pertain to you and your life. It’s also finding out who will support you on your journey to success in college and future endeavors.

Another important factor in being successful in college as well as in any endeavor and being responsible is knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Utilize your strengths to your advantage. Be direct yet tactful when relaying your strengths. It is always important to respect others. For example, if you are a leader, speak with conviction without being inconsiderate. Also, allow those that you lead to give input. Listen carefully to what the person is saying and ask questions so that you have a clear understanding of what it is precisely that they are relaying to you. Your strength of effective communication in college can lay the foundation to a plethora of successes in your future. With this in mind, this may be one strong component that is needed to help you to choose a major and help you to create future goals associated with your strengths. This will greatly increase your chances of achieving your goals for success.

I find that communicating is one of my strongest qualities. I enjoy listening to what others have to say and I think that this will allow me to succeed while in college and in the future. Upon graduation, I will have received my bachelor of science in psychology. I will also be pursuing my masters in this field as well. Utilizing my strength, which is communicating will help me to reach my goal of becoming a counselor. I have come a long way with the fact that I can now communicate effectively. When I was married, I was not communicating at all. There were walls that were built and used for a defense mechanism. Which of course led to my marriage ending. I let that be the catalyst for me to improve my communication skills. Being divorced now has allowed me to take notice of how important it is for me to be and advocate for myself. It has opened doors for me as far as having a better relationship with my daughter especially but with everyone I encounter. In school, it helps me to say what I need to in a respectful manner but still get my point across. I think teaches me what personal responsibility really is and will allow me to achieve my goals of being successful in my college endeavors.

The most important reason that self-advocacy is your ability to relay effective communication and relating those interests to yourself is that this quality ensures that you will make sound decisions and takes responsibility for those decisions. You have an obligation to yourself to reap the benefits or suffer the consequences to whatever they decide. You may think that this is being unaware of other’s feelings but the only responsibility you have is to yourself and all that concerns you. By taking true responsibility for you frees you. Without taking responsibility, you fail to realize that you hold your destiny in your hands. To be conscious of what taking responsibility is in your life. ACT! Don’t react.

In conclusion, although it is important to listen effectively to others input in an educational setting this should not sway your decisions. Self- advocacy is an individual’s ability to convey effective skills of communication relating to one’s interests for two main reasons. First, knowing your strengths and weaknesses. But most importantly, making sound decisions and being responsible for those decisions. So if you want to be successful in college be an advocate for yourself. State your commitments and your convictions and prove them. Prove it to yourself.

Personal Responsibility and College Success

...Responsibility and College Success Andrew More Gen/200 August 20, 2012 Prof. Cassandra Smith Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal responsibility for me is an important concept composed of three parts. It is a continuous process, starting with the recognizing of social standards, which leads into the formulation of a plan as an effort to comply with these standards, and ends with the acceptance that failures are a direct result of my own shortcomings. These components are every bit as important as the whole, all intrinsically tied in with long term college success. Personal responsibility commences with the recognizing of social standards. People do this automatically without even knowing it. It is the constant desire to fit in, the interpretation of what is socially acceptable or not. This is where I choose what social group I wish to belong to. Each social group has its own different set of standards, yet they are always polarized into success or failure. My understanding of these standards is the basis for my perception of what failure is, and what success is. According to Haskins (2009) “When applied to education, personal responsibility means that students accept the responsibility to study hard and to learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity.” It can be said that students in general wish to be perceived as successful. The first thing I as a student do is evaluate what success means in my......

Success in college relies on many things. Dedication, a positive attitude, and good time management skills are just a few of requirements for a successful college experience, but without the one most important component, college success is not possible. The most important component in the equation for s successful college experience is personal responsibility. Personal responsibility is necessary for college success. An example of a car can be used to demonstrate college success. A car may have all of the necessary components to run; an engine, transmission, wheels, etc., but without fuel, the car will go nowhere. No matter how good all of the parts of the car seem to be, without fuel, the car will not move. In the case of college success, personal responsibility is the fuel. Just as a car goes nowhere without fuel, college success cannot happen without personal responsibility. A college student may have everything they need for college; the course......

Cycle Of Success In College

...Achieving success is primarily an individual’s ability to value their experiences in life. Whether it is success in education or competing in a particular sport or event, success is primarily the conscience recognition of an accumulation of many small or significant moments of progress and therefore can be considered a success. For example, at birth we are automatically exposed to an immediate unconscious attraction to a cycle of success and since we have taken our first breath of air, a valuable sense gains control and helps support our attraction or need for oxygen. The exposure of countless meaningful occurrences of success can lead to a cycle of positive recollection and meaningful experiences. Similarly, a cycle of success occurs when...

College Admissions Essay: The Success Of Failure

...The Success of Failure Since the day I could walk, I have been obsessed with greatness. Or afraid of failure, whichever way you want to look at it. Whether it was school, sports, or just being a friend to someone, I had a burning desire to always make the people in my life proud. Although this was true for everything I was involved in, it was especially true for cheerleading. I was a cheerleader from grade school all the way up until my senior year of high school. I loved it and it always came natural. When I made it to high school however, things started changing. After an unimaginably nerve racking tryout, I made the JV competition team as a freshman, which was my goal entering in. The year went by and I could see myself improving little by little everyday. I was sure by the next year’s tryouts I would make the Varsity competition team easily. My family kept telling me how excited they were to see me on Varsity and they just knew I would make it. The next year’s tryouts came around quicker than I realized, and even quicker came the disappointment of seeing my name on the JV competition roster, AGAIN! The disappointment I felt was unlike any other I had experienced. Nevertheless, cheerleading was the one thing I loved most and quitting was not an option. I began to develop a more positive attitude about the upcoming season and...

Especially, for those like myself that have been out of school for many years or even for those who had hard times in high school. It is my first quarter in college and I have found that college does not have to be challenging. If one such as myself, just takes the initiative to learn the ways to make it not such a trying time we can become very successful. There are many different study skills that can help us succeed in college. Note taking is one of the skills that I have found very helpfully in my first quarter in college. Taking notes can be used for many different reasons and help in many different ways. Notes can be used for teachings in class that have no related textbook. Writing down things like questions the teacher asks as well as the answers to those questions, these can reveal the teachers goals and objectives of the subject (“Study Tip #09”) . Even if there is a textbook to the teachings, notes can save time in having to go back through a chapter of the book to find the information needed. Writing down everything from titles to organize the notes to new words or concepts, even diagrams and forms can all be very useful. These notes are very helpful to look back at to study for upcoming exams. If one does not take notes all they have is memory to rely on, the odds aren't very good. “Most people can keep information in......
