Columbus: A Sight to See Like many of the people in this class, I have lived near Columbus, Ohio my entire life. I grew up near this bustling city and until just recently had forgotten to appreciate what an experience it is. "Columbus was founded on February 14, 1812" (Columbus, Ohio), and it is amazing how easily we can overlook things to that which we are accustomed. If you ask a few people from out of town or state about Columbus, they can usually tell you a handful of reasons to visit this vibrant city. People from cities all over the country come to shop at Polaris Fashion Place and Easton Town Center. Ohio athletics draw in thousands of people to the state of Ohio and Columbus specifically each year. With the cultural diversity in Columbus, …show more content…
Columbus offers places that have a distinct culture like the Italian Village and German Village. "Italian Village area was one of Columbus’ first suburbs, annexed to the city of Columbus in 1862" (Italian Village). This Village offers visitors a look at Italian heritage and their contribution to Columbus' melting pot; the Columbus Italian Festival draws in a crowd and helps to educate people. German Village has many places to shop and dine while experiencing the German culture. A German festival called Oktoberfest brings out people of German descent and beer drinkers alike to the Ohio Expo Center. This is a great chance for people to experience authentic culture like never before. Another great festival is the Asian Festival; this began in 1995 and has been a great tradition ever since. This festival includes a gala, food, games, a career fair, exhibits, performances, and dragon boat teams. This festival and parade is a tribute to the LGBTQ community and is one of the most controversial topics in Ohio topped only by legalizing marijuana and Kasich running for president. This forward thinking festival shows how Columbus have evolved and become tolerant of all people. Ohio Comic Con also invites everyone to see a different kind of people. Every year tons of people dress up and "cosplay" as their favorite comic book characters. This unique experience shows how obsessed people can become! Quite possibly the biggest event in Ohio is Red, White and BOOM! WNCI 97.9, NBC4, and Pepsi on the waterfront in Columbus host this all day event. There are streets lined with food, drink, apparel, and Fourth of July accessory vendors. WNCI 97.9 has speakers on every corner playing music to keep the party going. Many people camp out and party all day long in their taped off squares. I, personally, love to walk around and experience everything this day has to offer. A fun parade displays different sponsors and public figures while handing out candy to the kids. The end of the night is by far the best part of this event; it features a countdown to the biggest fireworks display in Ohio that is truly breathtaking.
