Business Valuation

...Q&A Introduction CASE = AMAZON.COM IN YEAR 2000 Version: 4/12/10 This case analyzes Amazon’s growth strategies up to June 2000, and critiques Lehman Brothers’ credit analyst Ravi Suria’s report of that month. Suria report was one of the first to be publicly critical of the cash flow prospects Amazon and the dot com sector in general. He did this because he was a credit analyst and Amazon was rare among dot coms to have a lot of debt. The case provides a variety of learning opportunities: (1) an evaluation of a company’s strategy and performance from a credit analysis perspective; (2) an appreciation of the potential value of contrarian thinking in fundamental analysis; and (3) the analysis of the type of strategies and market conditions that fueled the dot com bubble. Q1. 1.1 Regarding the long-term viability of Amazon's business per the case: What was Amazon’s original business model? (2 pts) I shall define a for-profit firm’s business model as the set of plans and strategies for the future that the firm has in place for earning at least normal profitability in the long run. Viewed through the lens of a statement of cash flows, a business model requires: Plans for financing; strategies for converting the cash raised by financing into investments of tangible and/or intangible assets; and strategies for generating abnormal profits from those assets through operations. Note that in their investing and operating activities, firms are less likely to be price......

...Data Sheet was designed to obtain from the respondents’ brief demographic information necessary for this study. Their GPA during the first semester of the present school year was used in order to determine their academic performance. The profile variables of the respondents were also investigated to find out if their adversity quotient and academic performance would be influenced by such factors. SPSS computer software was utilized in the calculation of the research data, the result of the t-test found out there was no significant difference between the adversity quotient and the sexes. However, the researcher found that there is a significant difference in the adversity quotient of the respondents when the group was tested according to course and year level through One-way ANOVA. Lastly, the results of the Pearson product moment correlation (Pearson r) showed there is a significant relationship between the adversity quotient and academic performance of the respondents in this study. The present study concludes that the adversity quotient is a factor which affects academic performance. However, not all the three variables namely sex were found to influence the adversity quotient of the respondents in this study. Of course, any errors and all opinions are our own. ----------------------- Page 4----------------------- Over the course of the past few decades, the cost of higher education at public colleges and universities has risen rapidly. Adjusting for the availability of state and federal financial aid, growth in the costs of higher education has outpaced inflation and even health care. The rise in tuition has been driven by a number of factors, including a pervasive trend in the use of cost offsetting in public higher education (Johnstone, 2004), and real and even nominal declines in appropriations due to state revenue shortfalls (Koshal & Koshal, 2000; Rizzo & Ehrenberg, 2003). By late 2008, with economic conditions weakening and financial pressures on state budgets......

...north Vietnam round a 120 kilometer long coast line and is literally translated as “Bay of Descending Dragons”. The top tourist attraction in Vietnam, Ha Long Bay features thousands of islands, each topped with thick jungle vegetation, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves, others islands include lakes and some support floating villages of fishermen. Pho-This simple staple consisting of a salty broth, fresh rice noodles, a sprinkling of herbs and chicken or beef, features predominately in the local diet -- and understandably so. It’s cheap, tasty, and widely available at all hours. Cha ca-This namesake alley is home to Cha Ca La Vong, which serves sizzling chunks of fish seasoned with garlic, ginger, turmeric and dill on a hot pan tableside. A good banh xeo is a crispy crepe bulging with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, plus the garnish of fresh herbs that are characteristic of most authentic Vietnamese dishes. This pork noodle dish from Hoi An is a bit like the various cultures that visited the trading port at its prime. The thicker noodles are similar to Japanese udon, the crispy won-ton crackers and pork are a Chinese touch, while the broth and herbs are clearly Vietnamese. Authentic cau lao is made only with water drawn from the local Ba Le well. The crispy shell with a soft veggie and meat filling dunked in a tangy sauce gets the gastronomic juices flowing before a main course. In the north these......

...the states and the people, with some small exceptions, were free to continue exercising their sovereign powers. When states and local communities take the lead on policy, the people are that much closer to the policymakers, and policymakers are that much more accountable to the people. Few Americans have spoken with their president; many have spoken with their mayor. It was clear in the minds of our founding fathers while they were framing the constitution that federal government was supposed to indulge itself in external matters, such as war, peace, negotiations and foreign commerce, also included was the power of taxation. The state government was able to exercise their power over all other objects, which included the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. Yes, the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the commerce clause in Wickard v. Filburn oversteps the limits on the federal government envisioned by the founding fathers. The Commerce Clause was meant primarily to restrain state power: to ensure the free flow of goods and services among the states, Congress was given the power to regulate such commerce, to make it "regular." The case of Wickard v. Filburn is as following: Facts The Agriculture Adjustment Act of 1938 (AAA) set quotas on the amount of wheat put into interstate commerce and established penalties for overproduction. The goal of......
