Using Language Effectively

Using Language Effectively

...Using Language Effectively In today’s world, it is easy for people to have different listening barriers when their lives are hectic. I know from personal experience how easy it can be to have come across listening barriers in my life. Certain studies had found that we are less likely to listen to people we are close with than people we don’t know. It showed that married couples were more likely to interrupt each other when communicating. In school I always had trouble listening and remembering certain topics I found uninteresting. In 24 hours I would have forgotten everything the teacher taught us that day. Some of the most common listening barriers that I have experienced are unchecked emotions, listener apprehension, and being self-absorbed. One listening barrier I have faced is unchecked emotions. An unchecked emotion is when someone enters an emotional state and it affects how well they listen. In the last two years I have had hard times with my family. Most of the problems left me really tender to want to talk about and/or listen too. When I would come across the subject with my husband I would let my emotions get the best of me and not really listen to what he was saying I needed to do to help my family get better. It took me a long time to find strategies to overcome this listening barrier. I had to learn to take my feelings out of the situation because they were holding me back. It took me a long time to learn this. This also caused other barriers like being......

...Week Two Individual: Using Language Effectively Maria Lobitos XCOM/200 March 23, 2013 Ellen Riordan The importance of listening in communication is colossal. “The importance of listening in communication is often well illustrated when we analyze our listening skills with those closest to us.” (Staiano. 2006.) For example, when we are conversing with family members such as spouse and children. When our children are talking sometimes we respond with uh-huh when they are trying to tell us something. Then when we are asked with a question, we respond with, “I am so sorry but what did you say again?” We tend not to listen completely because we are occupied on coming up with a response. Also even when listening to a music. Our mind tend to wonder and not really paying attention to the words of the song we are listening to. One of my experience in the past in regards to having a hard time listening was when we had a staff meeting at work and I was not able to properly decode information that did not make sense to me. It is because my own attitude of “already know the topic” that I brought to the staff meeting had an effect to my ability to listen to the manager. Since I already knew the topic, I was not that focus to the what the manager was saying and when the time came and the manager asked a question, I was not ready to respond. I was more preoccupied with my own thoughts that I did not focus on the message. Also, since the topic has been discussed many......

...Proof of God’s Existence Charles Porter COM 200 Final Argumentative Paper Is the proof of God necessary? Proofs are used to prove, using a deductive method, that a given necessarily exists. Proof is often like geometry there are given and certain rules is used to arrive at a conclusion of why that given is true. The proof for the existence of ‘God’ has an ultimate goal to prove that God logically and ‘necessarily exists’. If the proof is successful, any rational person cannot find fault in the claim that God does exist. Within the proofs ‘god’ must necessarily exist not just contingently exist. An example of contingent existing would be a balloon is in my hand; prior to making this balloon the balloon did not exist and after the balloon pops and disintegrates it too will not exist. This balloon has contingent existence and it is not necessary. The proof that God exists must be a necessity and should be stronger than evidence that ‘God’ does exist. Something had to create the universe because it did not always exist, therefore God must exist. Many people dispute, thus saying that there is not actual proof that God does exist but that is where faith comes in the picture. Which argument for the existence of God is strongest and why? There are a few strong arguments for the existence of God. First there is the ontological argument which states that it is quite likely that a flawless being...

Letter of Advice Essay for Com 200

...Letter of Advice COM 200 – Interpersonal Communication Letter of Advice Dearest Adam and Sarah, The two of you are now husband and wife and have a wonderful future ahead of you. Learning to effectively communicate with each other will have a huge impact on how happy and fulfilling your marriage will be. Considering we have been communicating since birth and think we know how to communicate well with others, I want you to really take a look at your communication skills for self-examination. Learning to identify roadblocks, understanding how perceptions, emotions, and nonverbal expressions affect your relationship, and realizing how words have the power to create and affect attitudes, behavior, and perception are some things I want to share with you. I hope I can help you move past some of these barriers and on to a lasting marriage. A successful marriage depends on a lot of things with the most critical element being a compatible partner. The two of you seem to be very compatible and you need to continue to build on that compatibility with the second most critical element for a successful marriage, which is effective communication. According to Fischer & Hart (1995), “The most critical skill in marriage is communication. For whatever else marriage is, it is certainly a long conversation.” The two of you will be spending the rest of your lives together and you will want to make your long conversation interesting and purposeful. ...its kind (Sole, 2011, p. 22). I believe Life is the most precious gift in the world; moreover, empathy is the power that sustains the “gift” of life. In other words, when people in intimate relationships concern themselves with the problems and issues of others with compassion, and sympathy, life continues to advance. As imperfect and perfect as humans are, empathy serves as a yoke or connection that balances out what humanity can achieve. When couples communicate, it requires a sender (the root of the message), and the receiver (the person on the receiving end of the message) to engage in interpersonal communication. One of the keys to a strong and long lasting relationship is the ability to communicate well, and to listen effectively when someone else is talking. Occasionally, you may have to put up with or deal with uncomfortable situations from each other’s past e.g., children, and past friendships. I would not necessary worry about this, early in the relationship. From my experience as your relationship develops, these situations will correct themselves; thus I know each relationship is different. I’m lucky to have my parents help guide my footsteps in my relationship, and this is an example of it. My girlfriend endured my friends more than she would have like to for the first three years of our relationship, and believed she had to accept my friends as well. My father saw what was transpiring and read a Bible passage to me. (Genesis 2:24 King James Version),...

This article is interesting because one has never thought of how a simple conversation between someone would determine whether or not that person is willing to see or hear from you again. For instance with two people arguing at one another they are more prone to have a better language match then someone who is having a general conversation. Ones own opinion of language matching is more of how much you pay attention to that person and the conversation you have having with them. ...Letter of Advice COM 200 March 3rd, 2014 Wanda and Larry, today I am writing a letter for you that will hopefully give you some good advice on how to effectively use interpersonal communication. This will be key to a great marriage and maintaining a strong and healthy relationship. I want to tell you about some common misconceptions, barriers of communication, and the impact that your culture has on interpersonal relationships. By giving you a little advice, hopefully this will give you both a head start to a sustained marriage and give you a solid base to start on. It would be a lie if I told you that relationships aren't complicated in a lot of different ways. Relationships are delicate like a flower and should be handled very carefully. You have to exercise patience, be kind, and be thoughtful. More importantly, you need to know who you are and at the same time aware of your self-concept. “Today most researchers believe that who you think you are is a complex mix of how you see yourself; how others see you; what parents, teachers, and peers have told you about yourself; and what your society or culture tells you that you are or should be. Your self-concept is learned; it is organized, it is dynamic, and it is changeable” (Purkey, 1988). Listen to your significant other and listen to what they are telling you. Be open with each other. You can save a lot of time and heartache by doing this and in the end less......

My family members and I were using a lot of communication between us. Our verbal communication was that we didn’t pay attention to the words we were using. We just talked everyday like we usually do. In the article, “Functions words tap into verbal coordination between two people because these words are independent of conversation topics and require shared knowledge to be used effectively.” Bruce Bower, U.S. News & World Report, Washington: Nov 2010, pg.1. Because we communicate with others, and they understand us, the word must mean the same to everyone else as it does to us. (Kreidler, 1998). My language style matching score was 0.86, which was an average score. Interpersonal communication; we communicate with people. I don’t think that language style matching is a thorough to predict the quality of interpersonal relationships. Why? Interpersonal communication is a social process. I think it is within people we communicate with others constantly. Once you have conversation with others you learn, listen, and observe people and he world around your. This is how we build and maintain relationships with others and meet our personal needs. Language style matching diminished as each relationship soared. Bruce Bower, Nov. 2010, pg. 1. Most people are still learning how to communication that way it is so many problems with communication with love ones they think they really know that person but people change everyday and that’s wear the misunderstanding come in most people I believe that we do communication better with some one that we don’t know. It was some rueful in the article but also I disagree with some things that was said. According to Savitsky that’s what am saying in the begun of my paper some couple get so comfort with each other they lose sight on what is really important in there relationship and that is keeping communication open at all times it’s good for the sole. I think men plays a big part in communication with there other half they will talk to their friends about what is going on or how they feel but will not tell it to there other half men don’t talk about what is going on with them they really not going to talk about a doctor appointment and the bills they live that......

I do believe that language style matching is a thorough way to predict the quality of interpersonal relationships in some cases. The LSM test examines the verbal connection between two people which also signify how much attention each person is paying to one another when they are conversing. As stated in the article language style matching is a form of using function words and words in other categories that relates to one another in some form or fashion. One thing I found very interesting about the article was that two people who truly hate one another will often exhibit a high amount of language-style matching,” stated by Pennebaker. He also states that “Two people locked in a bitter fight tend to talk, or yell, in similar ways.” Just based on real life experiences I would have to say this is very much true in many situations I have been faced with. There have been numerous times I have met someone and it seemed as if we were just on the same page. ...the characteristics of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. Culture has become essential in our world, which is made up of many diverse societies. Learning a new culture is important because it allows us to understand the others around us. It also gives us a shared interest to communicate about. “When individuals are born into a particular society, they begin a process of enculturation, when they learn and adopt the norms, traditions, and beliefs of their dominant culture” (Bevan & Sole, 2014). I came from a small town in Bassdrop, Texas. My family had a small farm, where my sisters and I learned how to ride horses. When I moved to the inner city I was fourteen, and stuck out like a black eye. I had a thick accent compared to everyone at my new school. Luckily I made friends through shared interest. Learning their culture helped me to adapt to my new life in the city. My family found a new church, and my mom even learned how to make egg rolls. In my culture we speak differently than someone from the north. We use different words. In the south we say “water fountain”, up north they refer to it as a “bubbler”. Learning other cultures will help us to understand those around us. Talking with my family I can use slang words or phrases. In a new environment that wouldn’t be proper. In order to communicate effectively we need to be able to keep an open mind about others and their way of life. ......

...learners who need different teaching style. So teachers have to vary their techniques used inside their classes in order to achieve better understanding among their students. One of recommended solutions is using audio visual aids as a helping technique in classrooms. Many teachers adopt this style and they find it a fruitful technique that it not only develops language skills, but also contributes in giving students background for many cultures as well (Stoller, 1995).
