Learning English through video diary is the fascinating way to approach English vocabulary
Do people nowadays still improving English vocabulary by just reading? For me reading it was just an input. Learning should be interactive.
There are a lots of leisure activities surrounding us. People might think that watching an English movie is more effective rather than just reading books. But by just watching is not enough to improve English vocabulary. There is an widely accepted assumption that filming our daily conversations to improve English vocabulary instead of just reading.
In the process of filming, we are involves in the conversation. We can improve our listening skills and observes the gesture, tune of voice, action and etc.

Video as a listening tool “Video as a listening tool can enhance the listening experience for our students. We very rarely hear a disembodied voice in real life but as teachers we constantly ask our students to work with recorded conversations of people they never see.”-- By Mark McKinnon

...February 1, 2016 C Lit 251: Food in Comics Mid-Term Scene Analysis Mid-Term Scene Analysis The scene that I am going to analyze is the one of page 28 of Oishinbo a la carte: Japanese Cuisine, where Yuzan reacts to hearing his son and rival, Shiro, is responsible for the remarkable dish of Dashi. When initially glancing at this page and its pictures, the reader is able to make a prediction about what the scene might be about. The first thing I saw was the scowling face of Yuzan and the powerful streaks coming from behind his head. This panel is placed almost exactly in the middle of the page and takes up quite a bit of space. I think the reason for this is because it’s important to express to the reader how angry, mean and shocked Yuzan is when he finds out his son cooked the Dashi dish. The top tier consists of two panels, one rounded edge word balloon and two jagged edged word balloons. Since we are reading, not hearing, the conversation, it is a little hard to understand how things are being stated (i.e. tone, pitch, or loudness). I believe the artist makes up for this through the characteristics of word balloons. Simply based on what is said in each word balloon, I have come to the conclusion that if the word balloon has a jagged edge, then it represents a more powerful, angry or important description. If the word balloon has a smooth or rounded edge to it, then the voice is most likely softer, less important or a conversation happening in the background of the scene....

...Today’s Comic Culture in India Manan Kumar A Brief History The realm of comics has evolved relatively later in India than in the West. Around three decades ago comics were not much in vogue in India. The selection that was available was in the form of imported digests and books like Tintin (originally French private detective), Asterix and Obelix (superheroes of Gaul, erstwhile France), Archie and Commando (war stories of World War II) etc. A costly product for an average Indian, these comics were rather available to the children of the wealthy. The change came in the mid ’60s when a leading newspaper publication house of India launched Indrajal Comics. It was the first serious effort directed towards the evolution of comic culture in India. Well within the buying capacity of middle class children, Indrajal Comics made foreign comic heroes like “Phantom- the ghost who walks”, Mandrake the magician, and Flash Gordon household names in India. The immediate success of Indrajal Comics gave a further boost to the indigenous comic industry and in 1967 came the educational comics series called Amar Chitra Katha (Immortal Picture Stories) by Anant Pai, who is also considered the father of Indian comics. A welcome change, Amar Chitra Katha effected a fusion of the rich treasure of folk tales and exploits of mythical and legendary characters in comics. Each of the comics in this series was devoted to a person or event in Indian history, religion and mythology. Anant Pai conceptualised...

...Oral Roberts University SUPERIORITY AND BLURRED LINES: An observation of the themes communicated in major DC Comics storylines Joshua Gallego Philosophy of Science HONR 102 Dr. Ken Weed/Dr. Samuel Thorpe March 13, 2014 Introduction Superheroes are part of an American upbringing. Stories of persons with capabilities that far exceed that of the human race are popular and appealing to our youth and even to many adults. Entertainment in general pervades the American culture, and this specific type of entertainment dealing with superheroes is of considerable size and has been a constant for several decades. Images of Superman, Captain America and many others are immediately recognized when seen. The entertainment value of these fictitious tales has caused the companies that own them to expand into creating computer games and producing movies, which has made them even more visible. It is considered weird if a person does not even know the basic story of these costumed figures. The adventures, stories, and even lives of these fictions have become a part of the American Psyche. Throughout the course of this semester, discussion in the Philosophy of Science class has led to topics such as the paradigms and presuppositions that we approach our world from and the metaphors that we use to communicate ideas and concepts. Such discussion has led to the asking of questions concerning things that we encounter in everyday circumstances. Questions like “What are the presuppositions...

Comics & Politics

...Research Paper Comics & Politics In December of 1940 almost a year before the U.S. would enter into WWII, Captain America Comic #1 was released with the cover showing the super hero punching Hitler (Aiken, 41). This is only one of several different examples of politics being present in comics. No matter the political issue comics have not been afraid to express their views on politics. There is no denying that politics are present in comics, but the real question is, do politics belong in comics? Mainstream comics sole purpose is to make money, and companies will do write about anything if they think it will sell more comics. In this instance the comic book companies are using politics to gain interest and sell their product. Without the presence of politics in comics many story lines would not have been as strong, and many characters would not have been created. Atomic Warfare and the Regan administration both were heavily displayed in comics and both had a significant effect on comic books. When President Harry Truman ordered for the bombing of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki and revealed to the world the power behind atomic warfare, soon followed an onslaught of controversy whether this technology belonged in war. The world had never seen such power and soon the world began to debate this topic. Comic books soon began to publish stories, mainly involving superhero’s, with atomic related stories. As the years progressed and the U.S. entered into the Cold War with...

Scott Mccloud Making Comics Summary

...McCloud's Text: Making Comics Scott McCloud introduces a comprehensive look in his book, Making Comics, both thoroughly and with a good dose of dry humor. He illustrates his points, with precision, through the use of text and image. It is a very effective way of absorbing key methods. A guiding and consistent message McCloud gives is the idea that the artist must connect with their readers on a human level. On page 60, McCloud explains that humans love humans and love hearing stories about other humans and expresses the slightest hint will cause them to make up a story. He says, “Even the loosest scribble will suggest a figure, an emotion or a gesture” (McCloud, 2006) He expounds that it is easy to throw out a few lines and the reader will...

The Medium of Comics and Their Message

...Understanding Comics, The Invisible Art introduces three concepts in understanding the medium and construct of comics. These three concepts are the icon, closure, and panel-to-panel transitions. These concepts, introduced by McCloud are illustrated in the Japanese anime Yotsuba, created by Kiyohiko Azuma. Yotsuba follows the precocious adventures of a seriously strange kid named Yotsuba, who moves to the city with her father and manages to get herself into familiarly hilarious situations. The frames I chose deals with Yotsuba being introduced to a playground swing by a fellow student. Anime presents, through a progression of panels, how this comic illustrates the communication of information, ideas and experiences through various mediums (words, symbols, illustrations, etc). Upon analyzing this comic strip, it illustrates ways in which the medium’s message will change due to styling, point of view, framing, and closure. The artist’s use of medium reinforced the idea that the message of any piece of art, specifically comics, is not communicated solely through words, but through illustrations. One element of Azuma’s comics that illustrate how the mediums message is communicated through illustrations is the use of the Icon. Azuma’s drawing style is simple and therefore moves itself from any possible complexity within the characters, because a style that possesses realistic images can become more objective and can remove the image from the viewer. Within the medium of comics viewer identification...

Comic Book Pros and Cons

...The benefits and risks of comics in education by Corey Blake | January 30, 2013 This doesn’t come as a surprise to a lot of us, but a recent study confirms what’s been theorized for years: Comics are a stronger learning tool than text books. It’s gratifying to see for the already-converted, but it should also be a strong signal to publishers and educators that the recent exploration of comics in schools is the right way to go. After all, the brain processes images 60,000 times faster than it processes text. Image-based storytelling is a powerful educational tool. Comics are probably more able to combine story and information simultaneously, more effectively and seamlessly, than almost any other medium. Just look at how easily we superhero fans memorize our favorite character’s power levels, sound effects, costumes and history. I could chronologically sort Cyclops’ outfits over the past 50 years faster than I could list the first 10 presidents of the United States. Why? Because there is a colorful narrative in comics form tied to Cyclops that captured my imagination when I was young. Meanwhile, there was a dry narrative tied to the U.S. presidents, probably more like a litany of facts occasionally brought to life by a good teacher. That doesn’t mean a history comic needs to give George Washington a ruby-quartz visor and Spandex, of course (although that would be pretty awesome!). U.S. history is actually pretty crazy and interesting on its own, but the engagement level will...

Japanese vs American Comics

...Japanese Comics and American Comics A form of entertainment for many people has been watching T.V, drawing, playing videogames, and reading. In particular reading novels and biographies has applied to most, but a growing fad has been comics. From Marvel to DC as the big names in America, to Shojo to CLAMP in Japan, comics has grown to a worldwide fascination, as conventions and costume competitions broke out for the new comics emerging and for the old classics the fan base grew. There are many common and contrasting things that both types of these comics have. Being a comic artist myself I find it fascinating when the style of art depicts the type of comic it is, my particular favorite comics are from Japan and in the category of Shoujo. This means that the have larger eyes then other types of Japanese comics, the story revolves around a love story instead of a round of the main story that could be fantasy or a school setting the look of these types of comics have soft lines and many emotional senses in Japanese comics known as FullMoon o Sagashite, and Time Stranger Kyoko. Bold out line, dark black shading, and aggressive emotional faces, shown in Batman and Spiderman comics. American comics have a very one toned color scheme, meaning the back ground could be a variation of blues and reds depending on the time of day in the scene. Also these bold lines show the intensity of the scene. While with Japanese comics otherwise known as Manga, has sparked an interest in American...

Case Study: Online Comic Book Retailing

...Case Study: Online Comic Book Retailing Case Study: Online Comic Book Retailing Much like a lot of retail businesses the sale of comic books and related items has both grown and moved from the brick and mortar shops to online. In some cases this is to expand their customer base. In others it is a way to reach customers without the overhead of a physical shop, which carries various levels over overhead. My case study will look at three businesses, Mile High Comics, (milehighcomics.com) Midtown Comics, (midtowncomics.com) and My Comic Shop .com (mycomicshop.com). These three shops have different backgrounds and different levels of web presence. I’ll consider each to these things in the case study of online comic book retailing. I chose online comic book retailing as its something that I have familiarity with. Once upon a time I was a manager at a brick and mortar shop in St. Louis, Missouri. The Comic shop that I worked at was a family owned business and had been around for 20 years. The time away near the end of the 90’s and we were beginning to see a decline in sales Like many comic book retailers. You see in the early 90’s the comic book industry saw a boost in sales. Young readers were picking up comics for the first time. Many were getting into comics for the first time many were returning. A big reason for this is was that the large publishers, DC Comics and Marvel, were making efforts to bring new readers in different ways. One of these ways was to begin making collectable...

...Ronin—Frank Miller’s Graphic Novel 1. A ronin was a masterless samurai during the feudal period (1185-1868) of Japan. 2. There is a strong influence of the manga style, both in the artwork and narrative style. The manga style is characterised by Japanese comics. ‘Manga’ translated means “irresponsible pictures”. They are considered professional comics in Japan, has roots in 17th century Japan. The painting style of ‘manga’ is less concerned with the minute details and more with entertaining and meaningful connotations. For Frank Miller, the influence of ‘manga’ was predominant through the use of strong emphasis on visuals and character interaction over more plot-oriented pacing that was commonly seen in American comics. Miller incorporated the style into his noir style of graphics in a fusion of manga, noir and the pop culture spectrum—what is called OEL (Original English Language) manga today. The use of exaggerated facial expressions, emphasis on emotional (rather than plot-like) storytelling, and continued development of the characters over the course of the story blur the boundaries between the Japanese comic industry and the English comic industry in format, content, style, storytelling, and origin. 3. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic New York City populated by mutants and impoverished squatters. 4. Tragic and Comic

...The Tragic and the Comic It has been said that tragedy is life viewed close at hand, while comedy is life viewed at a distance. It has also been said that life is comedy to the person who thinks and tragedy to the one who feels. The chief source of the comic is the incongruous, the unexpected. We expect one thing but find another. The Parable of the Blind by William Carlos Williams (based on a painting of the same name by Pieter Brueghel the Elder) This horrible but superb painting the parable of the blind without a red in the composition shows a group of beggars leading each other diagonally downward across the canvas from one side to stumble finally into a bog where the picture and the composition ends back of which no seeing man is represented the unshaven features of the destitute with their few pitiful possessions a basin to wash in a peasant cottage is seen and a church spire the faces are raised as toward the light there is no detail extraneous to the composition one follows the others stick in hand triumphant to disaster Fundamental Types of Comedy and Tragedy Comedy of Situation – “Low Comedy” – slapstick comedy and farce Tragedy of Situation – “Low Tragedy” – the essence of melodrama; events that are exciting Comedy of Character – “High Comedy” Tragedy of Character – “High Tragedy” In low comedy and low tragedy the characters are not individuals but types.
