Commemorative Speech (Tribute) Manuscript
Good morning everyone.
Today I would like you to pretend you have no arms by simply secluding them securely (Alliteration) behind your back. Now take notes on a piece of paper of what I am about to present to you. It seems impossible right? Not quite. Jessica cox, who was born without arms due to a rare birth defect, accomplishes tasks like this on a daily basis. She has performed feats that most of us without so called 'physical challenges' would find daunting to emulate. She believes that by combining creativity, persistence, and fearlessness, nothing is impossible. This is how she turned what many thought was impossible into incredible accomplishments.

Jessica Cox first inspired me when she visited my elementary school in Tucson, Arizona where she shared her personal life story with my class. Young at the time, my attention span was very limited. She happened to capture my interest long enough though to teach me a life lesson that I will hold dearly in my heart forever. She taught me to stop using the phrase “I cant” and start saying, “I can.” Jessica being born without any arms was thought to be at a disadvantage and therefore expected to do less then her peers. She didn’t use her birth defect as an excuse to not being able to do something; instead she used it as motivation to work even harder. She never once said, “I cant”, and pursued her goals until she reached them. A well known quote by Andy Menthe describes Jessica’s success, as It reads: “A shot glass of desire is greater then a pitcher of talent.” This is true as anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. The only thing that stands between yourself and the goal you seek to accomplish; is yourself. For Jessica, she has a heart of stone (Metaphor), and nothing can get in the way of her desires.

...MEMORIAL MEDITATION Today is difficult; it is difficult because we have lost one of ours, a fellow Soldier, and saying goodbye is never easy. Death is not something we ever feel ready for, but especially not in the case of SPC Milo M. Shelton who died so young and unexpectedly. Some of you may ask, “How do we begin to move beyond grief, and how are we to process this tragic event?” I would like to share with you a few thoughts today, and I pray they give some hope and comfort in the midst of the suffering. First, we are a family and there is comfort in the ability to face difficulties together. SPC Shelton was not with us at Ft. Lee for long, but whether you have been a Soldier for 30 day or 30 years, you are one of us. The military brings us together in ways many don’t understand. It is like a second family, and SPC Shelton was part of that family, our family. He made the sacrificial decision to join the ranks of America’s best and we are thankful for his time and service here. We remember that service today and are thankful he chose to be one of us. SPC Shelton is remembered as a son, a friend, and a Soldier. We are honored to have been a part of his family. Secondly, there is an invaluable lesson to be learned even in the darkest of times -- Life is short and death can come suddenly. None of us knows what the next hour, the next day or the next year hold for us. John F. Kennedy once said, “We are not here to curse the darkness, but to light the candle that can guide...

...Stephen Sung 4/26/2011 Speech 100 JC Commemorative Speech Outline Joe, a Friend, an Inspiration, a Hero. Introduction Have you ever done something out of peer pressure from a friend or family member? My friend Joe has. In his case, that something was cigarettes. “According to the American Lung Association, as of 2007 20% of high school students and over forty-six million adults (18+) were current smokers” (Lung). Joe started smoking when he was 14 years old because all of his friends were doing it. He has battled with this addiction for most of his adult life. So, why is he a hero? For starters I am a current smoker and have been smoking for the better part of eight years. Most importantly, he is an inspiration because he is the only I person I know who has successfully quit smoking. Even though we've been friends for a long time, I had never thought to ask him about why he started and how he was finally able to free himself from his nicotine addiction. Body (Preview): It started the summer of 1999, the summer before our freshman year of high school. Joe began smoking cigarettes when he was fourteen years old. A) He was peer pressured into smoking his first cigarette by our mutual friends. 1) He felt that if he turned down the cigarette, he would be ostracized from that group of friends and forced to go through his high school years as a loser. 2) He figured that if had to resort to smoking to survive high school then so be it. B) Through...

...Welcome to Eventual Millionaire, I am Jamie Tardy and I am so excited to have Cole Hatter on the show. He is a serial entrepreneur, investor, runs Thrive, which is an amazing conference and you can check out his shirt, it looks awesome. Thanks so much for coming on the show today. Cole: Thanks for having me Jamie; I am looking forward to this. Jaime: I ridiculously appreciate this because we have tried to book you for 8 months now. I then had a whole bunch of Skype issues and you were like; I'm cool. So, apparently Skype is not a big deal in your world of craziness already. So, tell us what you do, how you got into serial entrepreneurship and if you could go through and name names on some of the companies that you actually started so we have a good idea. Cole: To keep it as brief as possible, I was not originally an entrepreneur, I was a firefighter. Some of your audience might already know that story, but I just wanted to help people. As I was in junior high school, evaluating what I would do with the rest of my life, I wanted to do something where I could see a tangible benefit in other people's lives. So, not that there is anything wrong with corporate America, but in that setting, working within a big corporation, I did not see how my hands would help people the way firefighting would. I pursued firefighting, got in a couple of accidents that put me in a wheelchair and I could not be a firefighter anymore, because I couldn’t even walk. I am healthy today...

Commemorative Speech

...The boy I am giving this speech on is not simply a friend. He's not even just a boy- he is a boy amongst men. He is a ninja amongst regular people. He is a ginger amongst...everyone else. He is... the ginga ninja. Caleb has impacted me by leading the front ensemble through work, fun, and breaking stuff. Caleb knew how to make lazy kids such as myself actually work. When I came to MOC as a freshman, I was a terrible percussionist. I couldn’t play timpani, piano, or mallet instruments, so I was placed on auxiliary, which basically meant I just played the cymbals. The front ensemble as a whole was awful, and we knew it. The pit was kind of a joke section to the rest of the band. We messed around a lot and didn’t get much done. The next year, Caleb took over as section leader. He helped push everyone in the pit to become better, which helped inspire me to work harder and learn to play mallet instruments. The all-male pit, nicknamed the FEGS, or Front Ensemble Guys, by Mr. Mangold, soared above and beyond what we thought we could achieve, mostly thanks to Caleb’s leadership....

Commemorative Speech

...I'm glad to get a chance to talk to you. Thank you so much for contacting me. What is it that inspired you to become an actress? Well, it's interesting because I'm from a really small town--in rural Manitoba. I've never really known anyone personally as an actor. The most famous people we met were hockey players. When my friends and I were in school, there was this traveling road show that would come to McCreary--the town I grew up in--and we would literally line up to see this live theater. And I remember seeing the audience and being totally transfixed in this world and loving it so much. But it wasn't until my English teacher , Darlene Grimstead, in high school moved to our town, and she created a drama club. And I joined it, and from the very first play we did, it was like I was hooked after that. She changed the path of my life for sure. So from there, what kind of training did you have to pursue this dream? Well, at that point, it was still something that was just kind of a hobby. I'm from a pretty practical family. My dad is a farmer, and he worked for the railway. And my mom was a secretary at the school we went to from kindergarten through grade twelve. There was just one school. So I went to the university originally to go into law. And I found out I didn't love all the reading and all the time spent in the library. So I changed my course, and I got into business. It was in my first year at the university, I'm pretty sure, I was scouted for modeling. So I started...

Commemorative Speech Exercise

...SP2000-Week 4-Effective Commemorative Speech Exercise The late President Ronald Reagan began his commemorative speech expressing deep sincerity and empathy his reason for the speech. It was a sad occasion, and I remember that day very clearly as I watched the astronauts take off, and then, what started out to be a moment of great excitement quickly turned into a heartbreaking occasion. I could not believe what I had just witnessed. I was speechless and numb. President Reagan’s face said it all. As he spoke, you could see the pain he was experiencing from this great tragedy. His speech was similar to that of a eulogy as he recounted the names of the astronauts one by one as if he knew them like family. President Reagan praised them for their great sacrifice for this country’s quest to explore outer space. Stephen Lucas (2012) stated, “Eulogies, Fourth of July speeches, and dedications are...

Commemorative Speech on Water

...COMMEMORATIVE SPEECH I decided to take this moment and celebrate you. I wanted to let you know that you are one of the most important things in my life. Actually, I am not exaggerating when I say that I owe my life to you. You keep me alive and for that, I will be forever thankful. I can’t quite remember the first time we met. It was a long time ago. My mother introduced us and it wasn’t love at first sight, for sure. I didn’t really know you, so that first encounter wasn’t very pleasant. You were cold and I didn’t know how to handle you, so I cried. A lot. But I got used to you and we started doing things together. You are always around when I need and always do your best when I need a refreshment in life. And even when I’m sick of you and go for new experiences, you don’t seem to hold a grudge and when I go back to you it’s like we never parted ways. You are transparent, strong and never quit. Whenever there’s something in your way, you find your own way to go around it and get to where you want and for that I admire you. You bring life to the ones around you and it is such an amazing feeling to see what you can do with that gift. And even when someone needs you to, you take them to where they wanna go without question. My favorite moment with you is when you suddenly appear, unannounced, like you fell from the sky with your graciousness. All of a sudden you put a smile on my face and I feel like dancing. I can’t remember having one single day without you and I hope that...

My Grandfather – a Commemorative Speech

...My Grandfather – A Commemorative Speech Some people leave this earth without their names being immortalized in history books, but that does not mean that they are forgotten. They are remembered by their friends and family. And some special people are remembered by people they hardly knew. My grandfather was one of those people. My grandfather was a special man. What made him special? Why will he be remembered by not only friends and family but also by small acquaintances? It was because he was a very selfless and compassionate man. He put everyone before himself in every situation. This was a man who worked three jobs at a time to support his wife and six children. He struggled most of his life to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. But he did so with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He didn’t just speak of compassion. Often he would let his children’s friends stay with them when their parents couldn’t keep them in their own home for various reasons. And though he wasn’t a rich man, he provided them with a roof over their head and food on the table, the same as he would do his own family. These children will remember the man who took them in when they had nowhere else to go. And he did not just speak of courage. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Often he would treat me to stories of when he saved fellow shipmates from being thrown overboard in the middle of a typhoon. And when he pulled into the port of Nagasaki and saw the...

Overcoming an Obstacle

...Overcoming Obstacle One of the most challenging obstacles I have had to overcome was learning a second language. To be successful I established two specific few goals to help guide me in the right direction. First, and I feel the most important goal, was to speak the language at all times. The second goal I made was to read the language whenever possible. Speaking the language was the most important goal to me because the act of speaking words helped ingrain those words and their definitions into memory. I always carried a dictionary/translator with me so I could look up words I did not know. In the beginning, not having a proper core knowledge of the language made this goal extremely difficult. As time progressed, however, I realized that it was becoming easier and easier to not only speak, but I required less time to think of what I was trying to say. Reading the language was another important goal to help me learn a second language. Reading the language was very helpful for increasing my vocabulary. I would always read out loud while working on this goal, which in turn also helped me achieve the first goal, as well. As I did with speaking the language, I kept a dictionary close by as to look up the words I did not know. Again as time went on, I noticed that the frequency of having to look up words began to decrease. Having to learn a second language is a difficult task to accomplish. The setting of goals was crucial to the success of my accomplishment...

Speech

...Journal #1 My speech wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it could have been better if I put more time into getting more information from my partner. The body paragraphs needed to give more information and go into more detail. Although it wasn’t that bad of a speech giving the thought that we met up for about thirty minutes. Back in high school when someone was giving a speech, we, the audience always tried to make them laugh, or simply just didn’t pay attention to the speaker and did something else. Now the audience was paying attention and being respectful which calmed me down when giving my speech. As the speaker I needed to be more enthusiastic while giving my speech, because how is the audience going to be interested if I don’t even seem interested. I noticed very few people glancing at their phones or just with a blank look in their face; this made me relax a little more for some reason. Even though I could have had more information and gone more into detail, my speech did flow from the thesis statement to my conclusion paragraph. I was getting more nervous as the names kept getting closer to mine, once my partner Aldo, brought me up when he gave his speech, which calmed my nervousness down a bit because it wasn’t that bad being in front of the class and having everyone’s eyes looking at you. Once my turn came to speak, I took deep breaths as I made my way to the front of the classroom, and once there I paused, and took one last deep breath, and then...

Learning a Foreign Language

...As the globalization process accelerating, it is critical to learn a foreign language. Therefore, we can communicate with foreigners with few language barriers. At the sometime, how to learning is a frequent topic of discussion languages. Some argue that understanding the country as well as the cultures and lifestyles of the people who speak it is benefit to learn a language. Personally, I agree with this opinion. A language is not only including vocabulary and grammar; also the cultures and lifestyle are mutually exclusive. In the first place, without understanding the cultures, we might use the language in some wrong cases. For example, it is wired when you staring talking with climate in English speaking countries, however it is a normal beginning in China. In the second place, lifestyle is a key factor to learning a language, especially in writing essays. In western area, essays always begin the writer’s views. In contrast, in our country, we prefer to render our opinions at the end of the essays. In the third place, learning about the country has the inherent advantage of learning language. More specifically, some special words restrict to some countries. If you never been there, you would not understand such words accurately. Admittedly, there would be some drawbacks if you learn a language in this way. To begin with, it is time-consuming. Generally, understanding a language’s background cost more time than only learning grammar and vocabulary. In addition, it is also...
