Committed

As Grandma lay in the newly delivered hospital bed, Jessica sat to her right in the big comfy arm chair. I sat to the left of her in an old wooden kitchen chair with barely any cushion at all. “It’s funny how time changes things,” Jessica said as she rubbed Grandma’s hand. “I can remember when my mom was in the hospital, Grandma would sit there for hours holding her hand. Telling her to wake up.” By now tears where rolling down both our faces. Jessica looked up at me with the biggest brown eyes; I used to have to turn away from those eyes when I tried to correct her as a little girl. Jessica is thirteen years younger than me and I used to baby sit her and her little brother. “You know, Kristie, I can remember when you used to keep Bryan and me,” she said as I swabbed the moist sponge over Grandma’s lips again. “You used to read stories to us and point to the words with your long skinny fingers. Now looking at Grandma’s hands and comparing them to yours, you have her hands.” “I know, Jessica,” was all I could say as we started pulling back Grandma’s covers to see if her diaper needed to be changed. “Funny how, I can’t ever remember Grandma changing a diaper,” I said as I turned to look at Jessica. We both had that look of trying to remember ever seeing that image. “I do remember her always singing…Stinky, Stinky, use your pinky,” I sang out. We both started giggling, and noticed Grandma’s feet were moving. Excitedly we removed the covers off her feet. Jessica grabbed her cell phone to record them moving, and joined me on another round of Stinky, Stinky, use your pinky. We did this four or five times until her feet stopped moving. After playing back the video a couple times we finished changing Grandma and walked to the kitchen to make more coffee. “I can’t believe you remember that,” Jessica said as she poured water into the coffee pot.
“Well, being one of the oldest Grandchildren, it wasn’t hard.” I told her as I reached to get the coffee down from the top shelf. “You forget I was thirteen when you and my brother were born, and by then Beverly, the oldest grandchild, was married and adding great grandchildren to the mix.” As I put the coffee into the coffee maker, I turned to Jessica. “The baby making hasn’t stopped since.” We both started laughing. Eleven grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren, and growing. Heading back into the bedroom I heard a noise in the living room. “Jessica, I’ll be back in a minute; I’m going to check on my Mom and Jean,” I said as I headed down the hall way. My Aunt Jean, Moms’ oldest sister was asleep in the den, the closest room to Grandma’s. As I made my way to the big living room, I noticed my mom tossing and turning on the sofa, not sleeping so well. “How’s Momma? Is something wrong?” she asked, sitting straight up as I bumped my knee on the coffee table next to her. “No, Momma nothing’s wrong. Why don’t you go into the spare bedroom and stretch out in the bed?” I tried to reassure her. “That room’s too far away from her! I won’t be able to hear.” She started tearing up. “Momma, your eyes and ears are right here.” I pointed to mine. “If anything comes up, you’ll be the first to know. Now get some rest.” Once I had her settled and she was back to sleep, I tiptoed back to Grandma’s room. “This is so hard,” I said to Jessica “She’s always been the caregiver and cook. Now seeing her bruised up from her fall, fragile and pale, I just can’t believe it’s all happening so fast.” I stepped back around the end of Grandma’s bed and sat back in the hard ass wooden chair. Every other hour we were either giving her a dose of morphine or a pill for anxiety. It just didn’t seem right. A few hours later, around five thirty am, my cousin’s wife Linda came by. “Are you two ok?” she asked as she handed both of us a freshly made sausage and cheese biscuit. “I cooked these this morning, haven’t been able to sleep either,” she said as she stepped into Grandma’s room. “I couldn’t find a substitute for my third graders today and I have to make sure they all get on the bus for their over-night trip. My assistant teacher is going on the trip with them, so I can be here.” She stated pacing back and forth, full of nervous energy. She left about fifteen minutes later.
Around six-thirty am, it was time to give Grandma another dose of morphine. As I was preparing the syringe, Jessica popped her head into the kitchen. “Kristie, I think you need to come here.” I could feel the nervousness in her voice. With the syringe still in my hand and all kinds of thoughts running through my mind, I followed her back into the bedroom. “Her pulse rate has dropped to forty-forty beats per minute, and her breathing has slowed down from one breath every four to six seconds to one every eight to ten seconds.” Jessica was nervously pacing between the dresser and doorway. “Calm down. Eric told us this would happen. That’s why he had us monitoring it every thirty minutes.” I was falling apart on the inside, “Not on my watch” was all I could think. I continued to fill the syringe with the morphine. I reassured Jessica that it was ok and gave Grandma the medicine. Afterward I stepped outside for a much needed cigarette and to call my brother. He answered on the second ring. “Hey, what’s wrong?” “Nothing major, Jessica is a little panicky. She checked Grandma’s pulse and breathing and it’s starting to drop just as you said it would.” I tried to sound not so worried and reassuring so he wouldn’t feel the need to rush right over. In his sleepy voice he said, “There’s nothing you can do. My alarm goes off in three minutes. I’ve got to get Emeri and Alyssa on the bus. Then I’ve got to take Ainsley to my mother in-law’s house and then I’ll be out there.” His voice was calming to me. Although he’s thirteen years younger than I am, I still look to him for comfort. Eric has been an EMT with Chatham County for ten years and his wife April is a registered nurse with Duke Hospital. The two of them, and their knowledge helped me relax for the time being. As I turned to walk back into the house I heard a crashing noise. I jerked open the big aluminum screen door and found my Aunt Jean standing in the middle of the kitchen floor, tears rolling down her cheeks, her eyes red and puffy from lack of sleep. “What’s wrong?” I asked as I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her. “Jessica said that Mom’s heart rate and breathing were dropping.” This was all I could make out through the uncontrollable sobs. “I’ve already lost my dad, brother, daughter and grandchild. I don’t won’t too lose her so soon.” I wrapped my arms tighter around her trying to take the pain from her. “It did drop, but I just got off the phone with Eric and he’s on his way.” I kept rubbing her back to comfort her. “We can go check it again, if it makes you feel better.”
“Yes, that would be nice.” Giggling through her sobs, she blurted out “Who’s gonna clean up this mess?” I started laughing myself, as Jessica walked through the kitchen door.
“Who made this mess in my floor?” she said in her best Grandma voice. “I can’t sleep for five minutes without someone making a mess! Sweep, dust, and mop are the only exercise I get anymore.”
By this time sleep deprivation had kicked in on all of us, and we all started laughing hysterically when the front door opened. I looked up and Jean’s oldest son Dale was coming through the door way all six foot of him looking at us like we had lost our minds or something.
“I take it every things ok,” He said with a slight grin.
Trying to control my laughing and wiping tears off my cheeks I replied “No”.
“No! What do you mean no? What the hell’s wrong with the three of you, standing there like you’ve all lost your damn minds laughing hysterically?” He yelled as he pushed past us and took off to Grandma’s room.
Jessica, Jean, and I started giggling again and cleaning up the spilled coffee. “He’s gonna have us committed,” Jessica said as she reached for the mop.
A few minutes later and with a clean floor, Dale came back into the kitchen with a puzzled look on his face. “Why did you tell me everything wasn’t ok? I just checked her pulse and it’s around 84 beats per minute and she’s taking a breath every four to five seconds.” I could feel the confusion in his voice and see it on his face. The three of us turned to each other and breathed a sigh of relief.
“We need sleep!” We sounded like a church choir we were so in unison together. After I explained to Dale what had gone on in the last hour, he decided to join us at the table for some freshly brewed coffee.
“I’m calling Dorethea on ya’ll,” he said as he took a sip of his coffee.
“Dorethea who?” my aunt asked.
“Dorethea Dix!” he exclaimed as he scrambled out of his chair to dodge the hand that was coming for him. It took my aunt a minute to catch the joke and she was trying to smack him on the arm.
“I don’t think Dorethea Dix Mental Hospital has enough beds for this family,” Jessica replied “Besides they closed down several years ago.”

...happiness. If we take a step back, stop and think about everything in life, it all requires some sort of commitment. A first-year pupil takes acceptance into a school or college with a commitment of graduating. We interview for a job with a commitment that, if hired, we will work hard and go above and beyond our duty description. Families run on commitment; parents are committed to their children, children are committed to their parents, wives are committed to their husbands, and husbands are committed to their wives. Everyone that enlists into the military commits to an automatic eight year term. When I joined the Army in 1993 I gave a commitment, on paper, to give that same eight years of my life to being the best Soldier I could be. Despite, on paper, eight years was the maximum anyone could give; I committed mentally, the next twenty years, no matter what hardships I endured along the way. To me, that was a genuine commitment and I wouldn’t be content until I accomplished that goal in my life. On my wedding day, I committed, to my wife, to love and to cherish her and she committed to honor and respect me. However, marriage is a day to day commitment; we have to commit through the happiness and through the suffering. Commitment doesn’t end when we get tired or frustrated, it sees through to the end. Enron Committed Suicide

...Enron Committed Suicide Name Leadership/LDR 531 April 11, 2011 Instructor Enron was considered the major player in energy and considered as one of the most successful companies until it collapsed in 2001. Failure of this company did not only affect the employees and stakeholders, but also it had a negative impact on the United States economy. Public scrutiny of Enron’s failure, through legal battles, revealed how the toxic organization leadership and culture were two of the major reasons the world’s top energy company collapsed. In this paper, the subject to be examined is how Enron’s organizational structure, culture, and the major contributors contributed to its failure. Enron’s Failure “Originally a gas pipeline company, it metamorphosed into the world's largest trader in gas, electricity, water, and all sorts of post-modern commodities such as bandwidth” (Gutman, 2002, p. 1). It appeared that Enron was one of the most successful companies in the United States. Share prices were doing well in the stock market, and the share value consistently grew, making them very attractive. The company’s growth was perceived as genuine until the company suddenly collapsed, leading to a disclosure of a scandal that involved the top leadership of the company. The scandal that led to the failure of Enron did not happen overnight. The failure was rooted in the company’s unethical leadership (Weidlich & Calkins, 2006). Enron’s fast rise to the largest energy management...

A Committed Spouse Is a Great Source of Energy!

...As a man, commitment is my sure intent to stay in a relationship with my wife while faithfulness is the practice of doing so. Having said that, let's admit that a committed spouse is not necessarily a faithful spouse. We men, in particular, succumb to the idea that I can have my Nalu but Mercy too. Nalu is the stable spouse with whom I raise my kids, attend church and grow gray hair with. Mercy represents the workplace "friendship" or sexual fling; she's the spice to my stable marriage. In my mind I am committed to both, but in practice am faithful to neither. But commitment is worth a lot more than my initial pessimistic view. Commitment can be equated to training for a race. Training doesn't guarantee winning, but it brings a host of benefits. The more deeply people are committed to their spouse and marriage, the more likely they are to: sacrifice for the sake of their marriage, feel satisfied with their relationship, feel less trapped in their marriage, enjoy longer-lasting marriages, not scan the horizon for alternative partners, etc. A committed partner is a great source of energy! Couples who are committed tend to share their thoughts more deeply. They go beyond discussing the Man Utd current slump in form, that's a discussion one can have with anyone. They describe what they are thinking, feeling, dreaming, and scheming. Couples who believe that their spouses should be able to mind-read, believe me, struggle relationally. It's frustrating having to guess what your friend...

Should Sex Offenders Be Committed By Sexual Predators?

...Sexual predators are people who have committed sex crime. In the United States, there are more than 400,000 registered sexual predators. There are many ways in which sexual offenders could be punished for their actions. For one, Law makers should pass on a law stating that sex offenders have to notify others by writing it on their social media accounts, that they have committed a sex crime. Secondly, sexual predators should be chemically casturated to help prevent urges. Lastly, if you are aware of a sexual predator in your community you should not be afraid to inform others because they might not be aware. Their statements should indicate the crime committed, if this is their first offense, if not how many, and the court’s decision upon the crime. Offenders must also state their physical characteristics and residential address. Indicating their...

Why Did Lydia Committed Suicide Essay

...I think that Lydia committed suicide subconsciously on purpose. Throughout the book we are told that she can't swim and that she doesn't like being in the water. This leads us to ask the question, why does she go out on the boat? She did it specifically for three reasons. 1) Lydia was so tired of all of the pressure that her mom and dad were putting on her to make friends and to be the smartest person ever. 2) The only reason that Lydia had survived all of these years was because Nath was their to support her, now that he's gone, she has nobody anymore. 3) Jack was the one person that Lydia connected to. Once she figured out that he was gay, and liked he brother of all people, after she tried to sex with him he rejected her. Metaphorically...

What Are The Sins Of Adultery Still Committed In The Scarlet Letter

...The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is related to American society in 2016 in which “sins” of adultery are still committed, and the idea of individuality are still present but the idea of a church or religion surrounding a society is not still present. Adultery is committed on a daily basis in American society, as it wasn’t too common in the nineteenth century. The Scarlet Letter's’ main theme in the story is about sin and how it was frowned upon in the Puritan society. Although, Puritan belief is set as they think that everyone is a sinner as they were born that way. The Puritans maintained strict watch over themselves and their townspeople, and sins were punishable by death. Hester Prynne had committed adultery with Dimmesdale which...

Managing Scarce Resources, Mistakes Committed in History

...Abstract In this essay I will discuss the role of scarcity in our economy and how it affects the market, also the economic and political systems created to solve the problem of scarcity. I will also discuss the role of scarcity on the choices made on an economy and how it affects the choice of the different types of economic systems. I will discuss the difference of capitalism and corporatism, the perfect competition against imperfect competition and how those economic systems are related to scarcity. I will also examine the role of scarcity on the rationing of products and food and how it influences people decisions on what they do with their money. To conclude I will examine the best solutions possible for the problem of scarcity and the mistakes made by governments when handling the problem of scarcity and their use of economic theories by know economics. Overall I am going to prove scarcity’s hole in every action we take related, or not, to economics. Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem of having seemingly unlimited human wants and needs in a world of limited resources. It states that society has insufficient productive resources to fulfill all human wants and needs. Alternatively, scarcity implies that not all of society's goals can be pursued at the same time; trade-offs are made of one good against others. It is a problem because the more one men wants the less the others can have because of the limited resources on the world. Scarcity...

Are More Female Murders Committed at the Hands of an Intimate Partner?

...Are More Female Murders Committed at the Hands of an Intimate Partner? Background Domestic violence is a very serious and prevalent issue in the United States. According to an article on Booksrags.com (2005), Domestic Violence, “Each year in the United States, an estimated two-to-four million women experience serious abuse from a male partner and thousands are killed…28% of all annual violence to women is by an intimate and 70% of intimate murder victims are women.” Although over the past 30 years intimate murders have decreased females are still at a higher risk of being murdered than males. According to Ronald B. Flowers (2000), “studies have found that 7 in 10 murdered women are killed by a husband, boyfriend, or ex-intimate partner.” This suggests that women are more likely to be murdered by someone they know than by an unknown perpetrator. The purpose of this project is to determine the effect total female intimate murders (F_MURDERS) has on total female murders (T_MURDERS) while holding constant the type of relationship the female victim had with the perpetrator (RELATIONSHIP), the race of the female victim (RACE), the location type (L_TYPE) and whether the perpetrator had easy access to a gun (ACCESS_GUN). The model (less constant and coefficients) is: F_MURDERS = T_MURDERS + RELATIONSHIP + RACE + L_TYPE+ACCESS_GUN The independent variable F_MURDERS is defined as total female murders caused by an intimate partner. The dependent variable T_MURDERS is defined...

To What Extent Is the Conservative Party Still Committed to Its Traditional Principles?

...TO WHAT EXTENT IS THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY STILL COMMITTED TO ITS TRADITIONAL PRINCIPLES? Since 1979 the conservative party has undergone significant changes from the traditional conservative party which focused on ideas about human nature, order and pragmatism, first with new right conservatism under Thatcher then with the current conservative party. The current conservative party however, can be seen to still be committed to its traditional conservative principles such as Euro-scepticism and that they remain largely traditionalist. However there are many ways in which the conservative party has changed such as taxation, education and the welfare state. One way the conservative party has changed is through taxation. Traditionally, the conservative party was known as believing in low tax however the current conservative party, seems to have changed certain parts of their policies about this perhaps shifting to a more central position on taxation proposing a new tax scheme where people earning under ten thousand pounds a year pay no tax and there would be bigger and more severe crack downs on top earners in offshore bank accounts. This signifies a deviation from traditional conservative principles, perhaps due to the modernisation of the party since Cameron became leader. One way the party has stayed committed to its conservative principles is through continued euro-scepticism. Traditionally the party has been very euro-sceptic initially not wanting to join the EU and later...

"The Only Factor That a Judge Should Consider When Sentencing Is the Nature of the Crime Committed”. Discuss the Validity of This Statement.

...nature of the crime committed”. Discuss the validity of this statement. The Criminal Law (Sentencing Act) 1988 determines that during the process of sentencing an offender, the nature of any indictable offence must be taken into account by a judge, along with a range of aggravating and mitigating factors. Essentially the judge must order a sentence that is fair considering the gravity of the offence and the particular circumstances of the offender; this is known as the "principle of proportionality". Comprised of objective and subjective factors, aggravation and mitigation factors often encompass key aspects of a judge's ruling - as evident in most sentencing remarks; they play a pivotal role in ensuring that each guilty individual is sentenced appropriately. As outlined in section 29A of the South Australian Criminal Law (Sentencing Act) of 1988, the court may “indicate an appropriate range of penalties for a particular offence or offences of a particular class” and “indicate how particular aggravating or mitigating factors (or aggravating or mitigating factors of a particular kind) should be reflected in sentence.” True justice, in terms of sentencing, can only be achieved if consideration is given to the offender's criminal history, personal circumstances, and post-crime actions: the nature of the offender as well as the nature of the crime must be considered by the judge. As made apparent by most sentencing remarks, alongside the nature of the crime committed, the criminal...

Assess the View That the Process of Globalisation Has Led to Changes in Both the Amount of Crime and the Types of Crime Committed

...Globalisation refers to the increasing interconnectedness of societies, the shrinking of the world in a social, cultural and economic sense. Globalisation has many causes including spread of ICT, the global mass media, cheap flight and easy movements of businesses. Many crimes now happen on a global scale due to globalisation such as cyber-crime and drug and people trafficking. Castells (1998) argues because of globalisation there is a globalised criminal economy worth £1 trillion. This is from different crimes such as arms dealing, human trafficking, green crime, sex tourism, smuggling illegal immigrants and trafficking in body parts as well as others. The global criminal economy has both a demand and supply side, the third world countries fulfill the demand in the west. For example with drugs and prostitutes, in the third world drug producing country of Columbia, the poor people rely on producing drugs to supply to the west to keep them and their families alive this then links to the globalisation process. Their main drug production is cocaine as it is simple to produce, they get high prices for it and it sells better than other drugs. This means that not only countries in the west that consume the drugs have to be looked at its also the third world countries that produce these drugs that need to be looked at also. Taylor (1997) argues globalisation has led to changes in the pattern and extent of crime. By giving free rein to market forces globalisation has created...
