Computer Mediated Communication
(CMC)
As humans, we communicate both socially and professionally in our everyday lives. We have taken advantage of the latest technology in order to better assist us in our communication transactions. Whether socially or professionally, we make use of the computer mediated communications to enable to stay in contact with family, friends, coworkers, and business associates around the globe.
Computer Mediated Communications, or CMC, is defined as any communicative transaction or process that allows a user or users to send messages through the use of two or more networked computers in the form of computer-mediated formats such as e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, video conferencing, or list servers. The best known form of computer mediated communications is the internet as this form of communication allows access to all forms of communicative tools. Email has the lowest form of social presence as it mainly involves text. Video conferencing is the highest form of social presence because it involves more of a live interaction among the participants which can include facial expressions and audio options.
In the past, we have always relied on other forms of communication which were a bit slower and not as personable or instantaneous as we are familiar with in today’s technology. We use to rely on face to face encounters, which we still acknowledged as the best means of meeting both socially and professionally. We also relied on letter writing, telegrams, and the telephone system. While times have changes and our forms of communication have improved dramatically, we still have some issues to overcome with our new technological upgrades.
Some believe that the CMC have made communications less personable in regards to the context cues, conversation recordability, rate of exchange, level of formality, and the anonymity of the user. Trust must be present in our new communication endeavors; however, there are some advantages that individuals have noted such as the elimination of anxiety during a business meeting or the absence of trying to make an impression on fellow business associates. Computer mediated communications have allowed us to become more comfortable with ourselves and our services and presentations.
Of the different types of CMC listed above, video conferencing is the most highly sought after because of the ability to have a live interaction with other professionals. Using video conferencing allows one to watch the facial expressions and body language of other participants as well as to provide audio options. Presentations and/or group meetings prefer this method because it is highly effective and makes the size of the group irrelevant at any given location. The cost for this type of mediation is rather minute when you weigh it against the cost of travel times to meetings or trying to rush to get to a business deadline. This can increase productivity as well.
To get started using video conferencing, researching a good provider that will install high speed internet and lines to ensure efficient, fast, and hassle-free communication is a good place to start. These providers usually range from $200 to $1,000 depending on the services that you need. A dependable computer system usually ranges from $500 to $1,000 depending on the brand and the specifications that your company desires. A web-cam can run around $100 depending on the size and capability that you will need and lastly, a tabletop or wireless microphone system which will provide the audio for your conference will range from $150 to $300. This is everything that would be needed for a video conference to be successful and allow any business to conduct a meeting without incurring a lot of travel costs.
Video conferencing would be the choice that I would select to conduct a proper business meeting of any size. With the proper equipment, this would be the most reliable, efficient, and informed type of computer mediated communication that would be presented in real time.

Choosing Communication Medium

...Choosing a communication Medium There are two types of communication mediums needed for any successful business; Physical Media and Mechanical Media. Physical media channels where the person who is talking can be seen and heard by the audience. The whole point here is to be able to not only hear the messages, but also to see the body language and feel like they are in the room. This does not need to be two way channels. In certain situations the receiver expect physical communication. This is the case especially when dealing with high concern messages. If a message is perceived as important they expect to hear it live from their manager. On the other hand, mechanical media is more of the daily form of communication. With mechanical media written or electronic channels are the primary sources. These channels can be used as archives for messages or for giving the big picture and a deeper knowledge. But they can also be very fast. Typically though, because it is written, it is always interpret by the reader based on his or her mental condition. In other words, it is not best to put humor or irony in these communication mediums because it can be percieved the wrong way. Since the company is spread through several continents around the world a great new medium is Global 365. Microsoft Office 365 operates as a cloud-based replacement for Microsoft's desktop tools, packaging Office, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online and Microsoft Lync into a cloud service. Office 365 is...

Choosing a Communication Medium

...GE347 Writing Assignment – Week 1 Choosing a Communication Medium There are multiple communication mediums that allow the cooperation between individuals who are not physically in the same office or classroom. Choosing the correct medium depends on the needs of the group/company but it also depends, greatly, in its budget. To achieve our goal we would need a product that would allow us to easily share documents with the rest of the group as well as something that allows interaction between the members of the team so that all can share their opinions and provide feedback in all the different topics that will be discussed. Our first option would be the use of phone conferences, using this medium will allow easy interaction between members of the team since they’re all already familiar and comfortable with the use a phone. Documents could be shared via email, which is also something familiar to the members of the group. An alternate option would be the use of web conferencing. Most people work better and feel more comfortable talking to some one if they can actually see their faces. Using this method will also require the use of email to share documents. The great disadvantage with this option is the high amount of bandwidth an application like these uses and the limited bandwidth available for each team member. This could potentially cause many technical difficulties, increase frustration, decrease productivity and therefore hurt our time line. A third solution would...

Choosing a Communication Medium

...Choosing a Communication Medium Group Dynamics Choosing a communication medium for the scenario provided I would select The following. * Email * Web sites * Intranet * Video Conferencing Email is a great source to receive information and data needed for all the training required. Information from the IT department and from the vendor can be emailed to each individual of the group. All information pertaining to the competition’s product can also be sent via email. Web sites also contain valuable information such as the competitor’s product site, information on developmental strategies and more. You could also view information on the successful sales methods through your own intranet or by viewing the “Best Of The Best Marketing Awards” information. Both methods above are the best way to gather the pertinent information needed for your training sessions. Although, the information and data needed for this training exercise should be gathered by the lead trainer. Then sent out to each individual assigned by each company as the designated trainee. The best method for this would be via email or web posting for downloading. As for which computer mediated communication method I would recommend for the training I would have to say video conferencing. Scheduling and planning when would depend on time zones, but it is possible. With this scenario it involves visual information, such as the new software application and information that was gathered via email along...

Choosing a Communication Medium

...Choosing a Communication Medium Introduction: Many companies are using computer mediated communication for training and updating their employees. They must choose the most effective and efficient manner of communication. Effective and efficient may be defined as achieving the communication goal while considering budget and time restraints. Consider the following scenario: Your company has 21 offices around the world. None of the members will ever meet face-to-face because of geographical dispersion and scheduling conflicts. They have formed a team of one representative from each office to determine the method of marketing and new product training and to develop the training content. Due to the cost of travel and the large number of individuals that need to be trained, the training will never take place face-to-face. This training consists of: • Information about a new software application that will make your company more competitive. This information is available from the vendor and your IT department. • Information about the company’s most recent products. This information will come from the marketing department at headquarters. • Information about the competition’s products. This information is available from three different marketing groups located in New York, Tokyo, and London. • Successful sales methods that have been used by the different locations. This information is available from seven different locations that recently were given the “Best Of The...

...Ryan A Williams Lesson 4 Activity 1 New Building New building network setup, tools, medium, etc. List of Tools: * Crimpers * RJ-45 ends/ Connectors * Cable Toner * Toner Probe * Continuity Tester * Fish Tape * Patch Cords List of E equipment: * Cat 5e & 6 * Racks * Conduit Design and Configuration We will begin in the telecommunications room, ensuring we have enough space to set up all our required equipment need for network setup. From there we will map out all other room required to be configured into the network. The cabling of choice is Cat5e. It’s inexpensive, easy to maintain, test, run, and supports the required data transmission rates. Fiber would be great but it is much more costly and susceptible to 90 degree bends. Continuity tester will tell us if the cable to be bun is in good working condition before we actual setup the network. Easier to prevent problems before they have the opportunity to occur. Crimpers are essential to terminate runs at their desired locations with RJ-45 connectors, thru out the building. Whether they be at a work station, hub or server. Configuring connectors vs. wall jacks saves time and cost, and work just as well with the proper crimper. Patch cords will be used to connect ports to servers/ switches in the telecommunications room to ensure connect ability. Cable toners will help us identify cable runs from end to end. This will help us in preventing connectivity issues thru out the...

Philosophy

...Philosophy Paper 2 In today’s society, journalists allow the public to become spectators to the hardship felt by other countries. Through the use of media and global communications, coverage on wars and disaster has become a part of the average families home. Susan Sontag uses the quote, “if it bleeds, it leads”, to describe who the tabloids feature conflict and violence to incite a response from the public. These responses usually include compassion, indignation, or approval, as each misery is place in front of the ever-watchful eyes of the public. The public is increasingly suspicious of things that seem too good to be true. Thus, photographs that are less perfect and perhaps could have been taken by a mere passerby are more effective. One point that Sontag makes in the second section of her book Regarding the Pain of Others is that “a photograph has only one language.” The media also has many different ways of transmitting a message. There are perceived differences between how different kinds of mediums affect people. Marshall McLuhan coined the phrase “The medium is the message” (Book, 1967), meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived. A written account of a situation that is provided through written journalism has a complexity of thought and has the ability to be pitched to a larger or smaller readership. There can be miscommunication between the author’s...

The range in my perfectionistic style is medium. I might tend to see my ability to accomplish tasks as a measure of my self-worth. While people may see me as a diligent worker, my over-concern with being perfect can cause me to be abrupt and somewhat unresponsive to others feelings. The survey shows that my competitive style is in the high range. İt is a consideration to be in the high range of this style. Because I tend to be the winner rather then perform well. Also I like to get attention, and getting attention means being in the center which can disturb the relationship with others. My power-oriented style is in the high range. Synthesis Essay

...When being ask a question in today’s society, the automatic answer or reaction in order find a solution would be through the use of technology. We as the people have grown dependent on the world of the Internet, the accessibility of our phones and uses of clocks. A thought that we find hard to comprehend is that just about thirty years ago some of these tools did not exist. How has technology affected our minds and the way we think or even process information? Can we say we have turned our brains into a living computer, or are so dependent on outside answers that we have stopped thinking for ourselves? Now and days we have entered a state of obliviousness on how little knowledge and wisdom we truly have. It is very interesting to think about on how technology especially the television could affect our attention span and the information that is being given to us. In Postman’s “Amusing Ourselves to Death” he states a precise point “the average length of a shot on network television is only 3.5 seconds, so that the eye never rests, always has something to see” (86). This statement alone shows and proves on how peoples attention span is constantly shifting and changing focus to see what else is there is to see or what is next to come. As the Internet becoming more useful to people, written stories or narratives are becoming more extinct. In the article “The Transition to Digital Journalism” the author Paul Grabowicz’s stated, “Younger people in particular are said...

...The task of this assignment was to do some research, gather information and process the information to better understand a product. In this week we decided to look at our local pizza spots and see how good the deals really are. I chose two locations that I eat at on a regular basis and I was very surprised at what I discovered. In order to set a baseline for this project I chose to stick to the Small, Medium and Large Pizza deals. These prices are all based on a one topping peperoni pizza. In both cases though the prices were different, the extra toppings were both $.75 apiece. Since this was a constant variable for both locations, I decided it wasn’t that necessary to include. The two locations I decided to use were “I Love NY Pizza” and “2 Guys Pizza.” Both of these places have excellent pizza and it’s more of a convenience when I am deciding where I eat. With this new information though, I might be sticking to one location for now on though. Here are the results of my research: With this Data I am able to see that the Medium pizzas are comparable between the two places. The biggest difference in price would be in the small and large pizzas. When you factor in not only price, but also what you are getting for that price, I would have to say 2 Guys Pizza takes the win. They offer a great price of only $.01 a sq. in and the pizza itself is 300 sq. in larger than I love NY Pizza. When you look at this project as a whole there are a lot of variables that weren’t taken into...

...which it belongs. The ‘mirror’ gives an illusion of sublime weather under the conditions of tempest, which captures the viewers’ mind all the time—the vast realms and luminous coalescences of the grassland and dark clouds. The panoramic landscape at sunset has been manipulated, producing a paint-like effect across a vista of clouds at dusk, with extreme fears and depression sweeping over the horizon. This is the viewer’s first impression regarding the artwork’s composition in terms of evoking a breath-taking natural spectacle so intense it seems to pulse with life-force. In these intense stunning conditions, Fitzgerald seeks a sublime expression of the landscape by standout artwork techniques through composition, line, space, colour, medium and texture. The artwork represents the scene of tempest based on the composition, a focal point of clouds at dusk that balances the vista of the horizon. The line of interaction between reality and photography creates a harmonious landscape and the geographic horizon lines evoke the place where clouds meet the land’s edge. Consequently, hovering...

...personal thinking style was humanistic and encouraging at 85%. This style has manifested in my life as a compassionate person who sees the best in people and yet still encourages them to be better. I strive to be a valuable member of a team and it is highly important for those who work with me to understand that their differences and point of view is important and accepted. The backup thinking I exhibit is approval ranked in the 57th percentile. This fell in the medium range. Although it is in the medium range, I am closest to the high range. There was no surprise when my approval status was that I seek approval from others and may be resentful when I do not get the approval I work so hard for. Approval, in my mind, does not equal like or dislike. I feel that I have worked hard to be a productive citizen through my veteran and educational background. So, if basic approval does not exist, I will resent those feelings rather it is from friends, family, or coworkers. My achievement score was in the medium range while being closer...

...12 Ways I’ve Used #YOLO To Justify My Poor Life Decisions AUG. 2, 2012 By JANUARY NELSON 1. I told a boy that I had a crush on him five minutes after I saw him making out with some girl at a house party. After confessing my true feelings, I lunged at him so we could have a make out session of our own. Surprisingly, it worked. The power of YOLO, you guys! 2. One night recently I went to an ex-boyfriend’s birthday party and waited around until everyone left so I could seduce him. My plan backfired, however, because by the time everyone left, I was so wasted that I ended up just passing out on the couch. The next morning, my ex was like “…” and I was like “…” and we both were like “YOLO.” 3. Anytime I eat after 4 a.m., it’s predicated upon the excuse of “YOLO.” There should be a sandwich at the deli just named “YOLO.” “I’ll take the YOLO to go and, no, I prefer not to talk about it.” 4. Last month, I stayed up till 6 a.m. with a beautiful boy I just met. He was so gorgeous but so, so dumb. I don’t ordinarily do things like that. I don’t just go home with beautiful boys and stay up till 6 a.m. I am a lady, dammit! But, I swear it was the YOLO taking over me. Okay, and maybe like a little bit of the MDMA I ingested earlier in the evening, if you want to be honest, WHICH I DON’T. That night, as he was bringing me to climax, I wanted to scream “YOLO YOLO YOOOOOOO-LOOOOOOOOO!” but I didn’t. Missed opportunity, for sure. 5. Ordering delivery three times in one day. #YOLO...
