Effective communication has always been a big issue in our school. After completing all the required readings and additional research, I came to the realization that the problem lies with the communication methods used by my administrator. Her attitude, example, and beliefs have set the tone of how the entire school community collaborates and works together. “Leaders are increasingly important as creators of culture, decision makers, and change agents. These roles require the use of communication to develop shared meanings, search and use information effectively, and create and communicate, visions to enhance an organization’s future and guide it through eras of change” Witherspoon (1996, 204). One of the communication theories utilized by the administrator and the district is mechanistic, meaning that communication is just the broadcasting of information from one group, who is the sender, to the second group who receives it (Scudder, 2008). There is no discussion or opportunity for the receiver of the information to make comments, suggestions or objections to the communication received. The expectation is that you follow directions and adhere to any deadlines given. This occurs often and is a common communication theory used by the administration, instructional supervisors, curriculum department, board of education, and the teachers’ union. For example, when changes occur to a curriculum pacing chart or a particular, scripted lesson, teachers will find a memo in their mailbox with details on the revisions that need to be made without additional discussion or support. This leads to confusion for some of the staff and they take it upon themselves to review the information and come to a consensus on how to move forward. The

With this knowledge it can be said that communication is a two way process during which information is shared between senders and recipients.
