Critically examine the ‘HP Way’ in the organisation’s communication process.
Communication is the process between two or more parties in which information is transferred and understood. Effective communication occurs when the sender’s message is fully understood by the receiver while efficient communication occurs at minimum cost in terms of resources expended. Effective communication is critical for imperative leadership as it allows the senior management to exchange and share information with the employees and vice versa. HP uses a variety of communication techniques between the company and its employers to ensure all employers have the chance for their opinions to be heard. The company takes an informal approach to communication and was one of the first companies in the USA to implement an open door policy whereby junior employees were allowed direct access to senior managers in order to talk about any problems, whether they were personal or job-related. The HP culture of openness was also carried through to more casual meetings such as coffee breaks and ‘beer busts’ where managers and employees could discuss work issues together in a casual context. This relaxed atmosphere has many benefits as it encourages face-to-face communication, which is the most effective form. Only 7% of a message is received through the words that are being said while 93% is through the tone of voice, facial expression, body position and gestures. Through face-to-face communication the employees can convey their message in a clearer way, which results in a high performance workplace. Although this informal communication approach may be beneficial in some aspects it may also result in employs getting too personal with one another.
