Webster’s defines rhetoric as “the art or skill of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people”. Ethos, logos, and pathos are each used in their own way to influence an audience, but often a combination of these techniques can be the most effective approach. The article from the New York Times, “As U.S. Modernizes Nuclear Weapons, ‘Smaller’ Leaves Some Uneasy” shows this effect through several examples.
Though all are present throughout the article, the overwhelming approach is through ethos and effectively building the credibility of the article’s content. Almost every piece of information that is presented is linked either through a direct quote or a summary of the thoughts of an expert of the topic being discussed. With Nuclear Weapons Council directors, Pentagon heads, and Generals giving their opinions on nuclear weapons, one is inclined to trust what they read. When former head of Pentagon weapons testing Philip E. Coyle says, “I’m not a pacifist” (2016), but that the military is planning for an arsenal that is still far too big, then there may be a problem that needs to be examined. In terms of logos, the largest argument is economical. On one side of the debate, we are told that the refitting of old weapons is just cost-effective. New technologies and capabilities aren’t being added to the devices. They are just being refurbished with new plastic bits and wires that may wear over time. Counter-point, the new abilities to strategically and with incredible precision aim at a target hundreds of miles away and the creation of what the article calls “dial-a-yield” (this author prefers “choose-your-boom”) certainly sound like new technologies and capabilities. With the information that one class of these weapons alone would cost around $30 billion for only 1,000 units, something certainly seems wrong about

...Michael Beasinger 01-14-12 Comp 2 With these words I can Sell you anything With These Words I Can Sell You Anything is a warning piece from the 1990 book Doublespeak, by William Lutz. William is a English teacher at Rutgers University, who is often called the “George Orwell of the 90's” due to a similar feelings on totalitarianism and social injustice. In the piece lutz uses his dictionary like grasp on the meaning of words to debunk the “weasel” words that advertisers often use hype up and push a product. In the excerpt Lutz's thesis clearly states “Advertisers use weasel words to appear to be making a claim for a product in fact they are making no claim at all”. He then goes on by breaking several of these words down to their base meaning and then places them into context, for example “virtually spotless” a claim made on nearly every dish and laundry cleaning product on the market. The word virtually is used by advertisers as a almost guarantee but actually by definition means not in fact. Several of these weasel words are brought to trial and put to the sword in the same fashion. William Lutz's logos is very powerful in the argument using the words own definition and the advertisements writers lack of context to let it defeat itself. His use of pathos is strong points to warn his readers to look deeper at words such as “like magic” and “helps...”. His ethos in the argument do relay a sense of reliability in the piece, but could be called into question by a more...

Comp2 Argumentative Essay

...Argumentative Essay: Should Abortion Be Illegal? The legalization of abortion has been an issue that has been argued both publically and privately for several decades. In all social circles this subject is very sensitive because of the moral and emotional factors involved. For the religious community, it’s a matter of morality and biblical law. For the lay person or non-religious community it’s a matter of choice. In the political arena it’s a matter of economics. The one factor that stands out the most about this issue is that it is of a personal nature. The question at hand is should we legalize abortion, and should women on government assistance be able to receive an abortion as the expense of tax payers? In order to respond to this question responsibly let’s take a look back history to get a better understanding of abortion. Abortion actually dates back to Biblical times when women consumed an herbal concoction that would induce a spontaneous expulsion of a fetus. Though this practice often resulted in not ending the pregnancy or in the death of the mother and the fetus it was documented (Fox, 2012). Throughout history there have been documented incidents of abortion. In fact, in early American history, abortion was illegal and the death of the fetus was considered to be murder. Since the great legal battle of Roe verses Wade (Profile, 1973), advocates of women’s rights have continued to fight for a woman’s right to choose. This brings Fox, P. (2012). About...

...John Ertel Unit 1 Assignment 1 Sherri T. Roberts EN1420 - Composition II 9/25/2012 Unit 1 Assignment 1 1. What did you think when you encountered the word argument as you began to read this chapter? What do you think now? A. When I first encountered the word “argument” in this chapter, I immediately thought of the shouting matches that I would so often engage in with my father. However, upon further reading, I have discovered that in reality, argument means any subject upon which there is the possibility of having more than one view or standpoint. 2. Provide three examples of your own to illustrate the statement “Argument is everywhere.” One of your examples should be a visual argument. A. Argument is everywhere. This statement is evidenced by the fact that people everywhere are arguing. Whether is be about Romney's inane babble, or the fact that Obama hasn't fixed the Universe yet, people continue to argue their side of any disagreement. Another good example is bow ties. Some people think that bow ties are not cool. These people would be wrong because bow ties are in fact, very cool. 3. Describe traditional and consensual argument. Give two examples of each. A. Traditional argument is based around winning. It is where two parties are engaged in an argument, not with the goal of convincing the other party that they are right, but instead trying to prove that the other party is wrong. An example of consensual argument is where a group considers all sides of...

That being for african american people to just go back to Africa because they would be better off there. He felt as if they would be at peace only if they were on there homeland. This goes to show that the people in the nightmare article was scared and feared the white man. It seem like they were scared to stand up and fight they try to take the easy way out and leave. The people in the Black Mixtape were different. They weren't afraid to stand up to the white man for what they believed in. They believed that everyone should be treated equal. They wanted to end all segregation and be treated as the white man and they were ready to go to any such extent to get there message across. The Black Panthers was a group of african americans who were among the people on the mixtape who went into the California Assembly with loaded rifles. The engineering characteristics (ECs) affecting the product performances are designed to match the customer attributes (CAs). However, from the viewpoint of the QFD team, product design processes are performed in imprecise environments, and more than one factor must be taken into account in determining the target levels of ECs, especially the limited resources and increased market competition. This paper presents an imprecise goal programming (GP) approach to...

...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION A NSWERS TO Q UESTIONS 1.1 Computer architecture refers to those attributes of a system visible to a programmer or, put another way, those attributes that have a direct impact on the logical execution of a program. Computer organization refers to the operational units and their interconnections that realize the architectural specifications. Examples of architectural attributes include the instruction set, the number of bits used to represent various data types (e.g., numbers, characters), I/O mechanisms, and techniques for addressing memory. Organizational attributes include those hardware details transparent to the programmer, such as control signals; interfaces between the computer and peripherals; and the memory technology used. 1.2 Computer structure refers to the way in which the components of a computer are interrelated. Computer function refers to the operation of each individual component as part of the structure. 1.3 Data processing; data storage; data movement; and control. 1.4 Central processing unit (CPU): Controls the operation of the computer and performs its data processing functions; often simply referred to as processor. Main memory: Stores data. I/O: Moves data between the computer and its external environment. System interconnection: Some mechanism that provides for communication among CPU, main memory, and I/O. Factors Affecting Consumers Resistance to Innovation

...JÖ N K Ö P I N G I N T E R N A T I O N A L BU SI N E SS SC H O O L JÖ N KÖ P IN G U N IVERSITY F actors A ffecting C onsumer R esistance t o Innovation -A study of Smartphones- Master Thesis within Business Administration Author: Kamran Khan Kim Hyunwoo Tutor: Desalegn Abraha Jönköping May 2009 Abstract Background: In mobile phone industry, Smartphones are gaining popularity as an effective communication tool, providing users with “Smart” functionalities of both cell phone and Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). Experts in mobile industry expect that smartphones are going to be dominant in mobile phone market. However, Smartphone industry is facing a different reality, with its declining sales and less market share, forcing research companies (Gartner, Canalys, etc.) to change their expectations. This situation leads us to another important and often ignored perspective of innovation challenges, i.e. consumers' resistance; as consumers' adoption and purchase decision makes a significant difference in the success of innovative products. Problem: Innovation has been called as a key factor for companies to survive and grow in the long run, especially in the dynamic & complex markets and uncertain economic circumstances. Despite the successful outcome of innovations, inhibition or delay in the diffusion of innovation may translate this success into market failure, where resistance has been called as one of the main reasons for inhibiting or...
