Advertising

...INTRODUCTION Advertising or advertizing in business is a form of marketing communication used to encourage, persuade, or manipulate an audience (viewers, readers or listeners; sometimes a specific group) to take or continue to take some action. Most commonly, the desired result is to drive consumer behaviour with respect to a commercial offering, although political and ideological advertising is also common. This type of work belongs to a category called affective labour. DEFINITION OF ADVERTISING ‘Advertising can be defined as any paid form of non personal presentation and promotion of ideas, goods or services through mass media such as newspapers, magazines, television or radio by an identified sponsor’¹. (Philip Kotler, et al., Principles of Marketing, 2002).That means that advertising is the device used by the companies to communicate with them consumers. Advertising is playing an important part in both, the companies life and the consumer also.: for companies because through advertising they promote or market them products, so they are able to sell large stocks of goods that they produce and create demand for new products and offers, and for consumers because enable them to choose between different types of products on the market. In Latin, ad vertere means "to turn toward".] The purpose of advertising may also be to reassure employees or shareholders that a company is viable or successful. Re-Thinking the Relevance of Philosophy of Education for Educational Policy Making

...Re-thinking the relevance of philosophy of education for educational policy making Morwenna Griffiths MORAY HOUSE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH Abstract The overall question, ‘What kind of ‘philosophy of education’ is relevant to educational policy makers?’ is addressed by focussing on the following four themes: What meanings are attached to the term philosophy (of education) by philosophers themselves? What meanings are attached to the term philosophy (of education) by policy makers? What difference does place and time make to these meanings? How do these different meanings affect the possibility of philosophy (of education) influencing policy? The question is addressed using both philosophical methods and also some empirical evidence from conversations and conversational interviews with some philosophers of education and other educational researchers. The argument begins with an investigation of different ways of understanding philosophy and philosophy of education in relation to education and educational policy. It then examines first the current policy context and secondly some evidence about the practices of policy makers in relation to ideas and to research. It goes on to present some of the findings from the conversational evidence. The paper is drawn together in the penultimate section where I make some suggestions about possible fruitful relationships between philosophy and policy making. Finally, in the concluding section, I point out some further...

Performance Appraisal

...INTRODUCTION Performance management can be defined as a strategic and integrated approach to delivering sustained success to organizations by improving the performance of the human capital and by developing the capabilities of teams and individuals within that organization (Armstrong and Baron, 2000). The process of performance management therefore focuses not only with ‘WHAT’ is produced but, also ‘HOW’ it is produced. It seeks to ensure that what has been produced is in line with the organization’s needs and these products have been produced in line with the organization’s way of doing things. Performance management can be achieved through many different ways. These include performance appraisal system and coaching. Performance appraisal system can be described as a fairly old system of measuring employees’ performance that has been in use in many organizations. However, Performance appraisal has not brought in the amount of positive results that was expected of it. Armstrong and Mulis (1994:86) quoted one manager describing performance appraisal as “a dishonest annual ritual”. The question that arises then is: “If Managers (the custodians of the system) do not have confidence in their own system, what more employees (who happen to be victims of the system)?” The meaning of the word “appraisal” is “to fix a price or value for something”. This is used in finance in terms such as project appraisal or financial appraisal where a value is attached to a project. Similarly performance...

...THE RULES OF THE GAME: NOUVELLE EDITION FRANCAISE/THE KOBAL COLLECTION DEEP FOCUS CANON FODDER As the sun finally sets on the century of cinema, by what criteria do we determine its masterworks? BY PAU L SC H RA D E R Top guns (and dogs): the #1 The Rules of the Game September-October 2006 FILM COMMENT 33 Sunrise PREFACE THE BOOK I DIDN’T WRITE I n march 2003 i was having dinner in london with Faber and Faber’s editor of film books, Walter Donohue, and several others when the conversation turned to the current state of film criticism and lack of knowledge of film history in general. I remarked on a former assistant who, when told to look up Montgomery Clift, returned some minutes later asking, “Where is that?” I replied that I thought it was in the Hollywood Hills, and he returned to his search engine. Yes, we agreed, there are too many films, too much history, for today’s student to master. “Someone should write a film version of Harold Bloom’s The Western Canon,” a writer from The Independent suggested, and “the person who should write it,” he said, looking at me, “is you.” I looked to Walter, who replied, “If you write it, I’ll publish it.” And the die was cast. Faber offered a contract, and I set to work. Following the Bloom model I decided it should be an elitist canon, not populist, raising the bar so high that only a handful of films would pass over. I proceeded to compile a list of essential films, attempting, as best I could, to...

Walter Benjamin

...Walter Benjamin (1936) The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction ________________________________________ Source: UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television; Transcribed: by Andy Blunden 1998; proofed and corrected Feb. 2005. ________________________________________ “Our fine arts were developed, their types and uses were established, in times very different from the present, by men whose power of action upon things was insignificant in comparison with ours. But the amazing growth of our techniques, the adaptability and precision they have attained, the ideas and habits they are creating, make it a certainty that profound changes are impending in the ancient craft of the Beautiful. In all the arts there is a physical component which can no longer be considered or treated as it used to be, which cannot remain unaffected by our modern knowledge and power. For the last twenty years neither matter nor space nor time has been what it was from time immemorial. We must expect great innovations to transform the entire technique of the arts, thereby affecting artistic invention itself and perhaps even bringing about an amazing \change in our very notion of art.” Paul Valéry, Pièces sur L’Art, 1931 Le Conquete de l’ubiquite Preface When Marx undertook his critique of the capitalistic mode of production, this mode was in its infancy. Marx directed his efforts in such a way as to give them prognostic value. He went back to the basic conditions underlying capitalistic...
