Compare And Contrast Essay: Softball Vs. Baseball

“Too high, too high, you almost hit her eye, and if you do, we’re coming after you. With bats, and balls, and evil Chucky Dolls.” Upon entering a softball complex, the first thing one will hear is the screaming and catcalling of softball cheers and chants. While one would never hear this sort of thing from a baseball field, many people say that softball and baseball are the same sport. This is completely inaccurate, since softball and baseball are alike in many ways, they are also completely different.
The very first thing that the untrained eye will point out about the difference of softball and baseball is the size and coloring of the balls. The baseball is 9 inches in circumference and white in color. The softball, on the other hand, is 12 inches in circumference and has a yellow leather encasing the ball. Though the softball is bigger and weighs more, the baseball is a more dense object because of its structure. Inside the baseball is a small cork sphere, and wrapped around the sphere is thin rubber and wool intertwined …show more content…
For example, baseball has the option of using a wooden bat, while softball does not. A baseball bat can be up to 42 inches long, but a softball bat can only be 34 inches long. There are many difference between the helmets used to guard your head while batting. A baseball batting helmet has no ear protector on the side facing the catcher, while a softball helmet does. Likewise a baseball helmet has no face mask, while in softball if one does not have a mask on their helmet, they are not allowed to hit. Also, softball players use a piece of equipment not used in baseball, the face mask. Since softball has a closer infield and bigger surface area of the ball, they wear a protective facemask while playing infield. The facemask is optional and can be worn by all positions, it is mostly worn by corner infielders, first base, third base, and the

...a story. The story concerned a small group of undervalued professional baseball players and executives, many of whom had been rejected as unfit for the big leagues, who had turned themselves into one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. But the idea for the book came well before I had good reason to write it—before I had a story to fall in love with. It began, really, with an innocent question: how did one of the poorest teams in baseball, the Oakland Athletics, win so many games? For more than a decade the people who run professional baseball have argued that the game was ceasing to be an athletic competition and becoming a financial one. The gap between rich and poor in baseball was far greater than in any other professional sport, and widening rapidly. At the opening of the 2002 season, the richest team, the New York Yankees, had a payroll of $126 million while the two poorest teams, the Oakland A's and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, had payrolls of less than a third of that, about $40 million. A decade before, the highest payroll team, the New York Mets, had spent about $44 million on baseball players and the lowest payroll team, the Cleveland Indians, a bit more than $8 million. The raw disparities meant that only the rich teams could afford the best players. A poor team could afford only the maimed and the inept, and was almost certain to fail. Or so argued the people who ran baseball. And I was inclined to...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...

...Comprehension in Translation If we ask people who know English whether they understand the following sentence “This car is very powerful” they all say they do. Their comprehension is based on two elements. One is their knowledge of the words and grammar of the English language. But this is not enough. In different contexts and in different situations the word “powerful” may mean different things: “ a powerful car “ in the advertisement is not the same as “ a powerful method” for solving a problem , or “a powerful man” in felling trees, though the three “powerfuls” do not have smth in common. Similarly, the word “car” can mean not only an automobile , but also according to Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language it means “ a streetcar; an elevator cage; a part of the balloon which carries people and equipment” . “Understanding” the above sentence means that those hearing or reading it can imagine automobile, probably big, that can run very fast. This is where the second element of comprehension comes in: besides knowledge of the language comprehension implies knowledge of the outside world, called extralinguistic knowledge or encyclopedic knowledge or background knowledge. Comprehension varies from non-comprehension to full comprehension. Total non-comprehension of verbal statements is extremely rare, since the situation and/or content almost always say smth about its meaning. The problem of full comprehension is rather more difficult to deal...
