From my interpretation from the information, I would say that Tiberius Gracchus had more to offer the common man than Julius Caesar. Julius Caesar was a spokesman for the populares (the aristocratic leaders). He spoke for the people who were higher class, not for those in the common people. Whereas Tiberius fought for the common people, that is why I picked Tiberius. Tiberius was a soldier who fought during the third Punic War and the Numantine War. There at the Numantine War he negotiated a treaty that allowed the men to leave with their arms. The soldiers had to leave their wife, children, and land to enter in to the military and many would come back home to either deteriorated land or had to claim bankruptcy. He was elected as the tribune of the people in 133 B.C.E. This position was a powerful position, and the purpose was to protect the plebeians from the patricians. Ironically, Tiberius is from a patrician family. However, he had a respect for those that were plebeians and wanted to help them as much as he could. Tiberius went back to a law that was more than two centuries old, it was unenforced but it intended to limit the amount of common and conquered land that patricians could own. Tiberius decided he was going to enforce this law. (Article) Tiberius went to the council of plebs, where he asked for a land reform bill. This would allow the government to reclaim public land from the large land owners to give it to landless people. (p. 112) Tiberius bypassed the Senate since they are large land owners and they would decline the bill, and took it to the Popular Assembly, where it was popular. (Article and p. 112) He also went to the extremes of preventing the bill from being vetoed. Therefore, the law had to be passed and the senate couldn’t do anything about it. The day of the vote at the Forum the senators beat him with clubs and spears until he was on the floor dead.
