In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, there are two characters named Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. Only one of those two characters is civilized, but in the beginning of the story they both seem to be civilized. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, civilized is marked by well-organized laws and rules about how people behave with each other. Using this definition, Rainsford can be determined the more civilized person compared to Zaroff. Rainsford is more civilized because he refuses to kill another person, he treats other people appropriately, and he uses the best of his abilities to get out of a bad situation. First of all, Rainsford is more civilized than Zaroff because he refuses to kill people

...The plot of the story begins with the main character’s arrival near the Island where he gets a bad feeling about being there. Rainsford then falls out of the ship and arrives on the shore of Ship-trap island. He then meets Zaroff, who is a hunter and reins over the entire island. Zaroff believes hunting is as innocent as playing a sport, but the one thing about him is that he hunts humans. Rainsford fights for his life for three days by mimcking the ways of a hunted animal. The story ends by Rainsford being able to kill Zaroff. The author set the setting of the story to reflect the plot. If the plot was in any other setting it wouldn’t be the same. In the story by Thomas Wolfe this isnt as true. The setting of the story is decribed as “It was about 4 o’clock in the afternoon, late October, and there was a smell of smoke, of leaves, of burning in the air.” Though this does give a little detail of the setting, it does not paint a vivid image for the reader.
