Being a mother is an extremely difficult task, as it involves a lot of strenuous work and unconditional love. The task of being a good mother, is often a job that can never be fully mastered as mothers will stumble and make mistakes along the way. In both " tears idle tears" and The rocking horse" the readers acknowledge the many problems Mrs Dickinson and Hester face as they raise their children. Many of the mistakes originate from their selfish attitudes and destructive personality. Hester, a superficial, loveless and cold woman, who selfishness leads to her son's demise or Mrs. Dickenson, a cold and cruel women who's heartless attitude destroys her relationship with her son. Dickingson proves to be a very destructive mother, her devoton to her child frederick is unquestionable but the tactics she uses to counteract his outburst of cries is defiantely cruel. She responds to his crying with " [frederick],You really haven't go to be such a baby." these cruel words suggests her lack of compassion and consideration for the child. Her impatience never allows her a chance to properly understand Frederick without her haste assumptions that he must be ignored and punished. SHe cruelly abandons him in the park leaving him to " look at the ducks till [he] stops that noise" and " don't catch up till [he] has."
