...First & Last Name First & Last Name English 101/Section # Date Essay #2 The Committer vs. the Non-Committer        There are many types of men in the world, and each type displays a variety of distinguishable characteristics. Women should become aware of these characteristics before considering a prospective mate. The smallest of personal details, from where and how they met (including the first date), the way he walks and talks, the clothes he wears, the career choice he's made, the vacation spots he frequents, or the automobile he drives can offer valuable, meaningful, insightful clues to whether or not a man will ever settle down with anyone. There are two main types of men in the world: the committer and the non-committer. The committer is serious about finding the right woman. He asks friends and relatives for introductions. He is usually open to blind dates and avoids the bar scene when looking for a quality woman. On the first date, he is polite and will not bring up the subject of money at the restaurant. He takes her to places where they can talk one-on-one. The non-committer is just looking for a woman. There is no room in his life for the woman. He, on the other hand, loves the bar scene. He usually finds a million excuses why he can't find the right woman and uses such excuses to explain why he is still unattached. On a date, he orders trendy food such as sushi to impress his date, and he monopolizes the conversation. He may even take her to places where...

Moore (Ret) and Joseph L. Galloway. These two books focus on the Vietnam War and more importantly the 1st Cavalry Divisions time in the Vietnam war. Both books are autobiographies written from a soldier’s point of view and both offer a unique look at life for different types of soldiers during the Vietnam War during the same period of time (1965) and even during the same Battles (Ia Drang Valley). Chickenhawk, by Mason, is written from the point of view of a huey “slick” pilot in the army’s first use of air assault or airmobile techniques. The book begins with Mason starting his career in the army and his transition through flight school and eventually making his way to the Vietnam War. The majority of the book focuses on his time in Vietnam and the daily life of an Army Huey pilot in the 1st Cav as well as his transfer to the “Blue Stars”, which occurs at the end of his tour. ...Compare and Contrast Essay The life of the horse in the story “Am I Blue”, and the life of a slave are very different, but the same in many ways. They are the same because the horse was owned by someone just like the slave was. The horse was also defenseless just as well as a slave was. Both the slave and the horse were both very unhappy. They were both sad, and upset, and hurt. They both wanted to be free but couldn’t be. Both horses and slaves were whipped and told what to do. Also when the the mother horse was taken away from the male horse it’s the same as when a baby is taken away from a woman slave. Both the horse and a slave do not have much freedom, and over worked and taken advantage of. They are different because a horse is an animal and a slave is human. A slave can do more for themselves rather than a horse. Horses can endure more pain then the pain of slavery. Horses are a lot stronger than a slave. Slaves on the other hand never gave up. When a slave falls they get ‘right back up and keep going. A horse if it breaks its leg it’s done for. Its owner will most likely just shoot it and continue on. A slave has to be taken care a little bit more than a horse would. Horses can go a long while without eating. Slaves can only go a couple days. There are many different reasons why these two are the same and why they are different. These were only a...

...Dallas Floyd Jordan English 1302.4062 30 March 2012 Essay There are extreme self-esteem issues around the world. From boys to men, girls to women, everyone is affected by their, or someone else’s, comments towards how they look that day. When looking at “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy and “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde, one must decide whether they take criticism from others, or if they critique themselves to the point of no return. In “Barbie Doll” the girl takes shots from her peers about her “…great big nose and fat legs” up to the point where she cuts her nose and legs off and dies (1. 6). But in “Hanging Fire” the girl puts so much pressure on herself to conform to the sociological norm that she begins to think suicidal thoughts, wondering if she “will live long enough/to grow up” (3. 32-33). The mental aspect of self-esteem can have two categories, bringing others down and one bringing themselves down. When younger, one’s mindset is caring about what others think about to fit in with the “cool group.” But leading up to the teenage years, one starts to care less of what others say and judge themselves, which leads to one feeling uncomfortable in their skin. The criticism from peers and critical thoughts of oneself could lead to suicidal thoughts or worse, death. If one separates self-esteem into...

...Bruna DaSilva ENG 071, Basic Writing Fall 2012 Compare and Contrast Essay Professor Arthur Harris People are always looking for their vacation time. There are many places to chose. The places people choose to take a vacation are the beaches and the mountains in my opinion. Both places can offer fun activities. The beach has activities the mountain cannot give, and the mountain has activities the beach do not. The mountain and the beach are very different. Climate is very important to enjoy any vacation. If someone does not like cold weather, she might have a hard time in the mountains. The cold climate in mountains is the first thing to enjoy it, and the climate also determines the type of activity it offers. Snow boarding, mountain climbing, mountain biking, hiking, and skiing are some activities that people can enjoy when they go to the mountains. There are many places that have mountains where people can go and have a great time. Canada is a country that has many mountains where people can go and have fun. Warm climate is one of the most important thing that the beach has. Sun and fun are two things that can describe the beach. The sea and the warm climate determine activities at the beach. People can swim, play volleyball, play soccer, etc. At many beaches, there are discos and restaurants where people can dance or party at night. Mexico has many beautiful beaches to visit. Acapulco and Cancun are two of the most famous beaches in the world. It doesn’t matter...

...Issa Haddad Jason Sebacher ENGL102 27 November 2012 Compare/Contrast Essay In Dylan Thomas', “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”, he entreats his father to not succumb quietly to death. He uses the metaphor, "the dying of the light" (3) to illustrate that he feels death to be a destructive power seeking to put out the "light" which is the human life force. That he feels this destruction should not be passively accepted is first shown when he states, "old age should burn and rave at the close of day" (2). He employs the metaphor, "close of day" (2) to show he feels death is an end to human consciousness as he knows it. He also uses "old age" (2) to personify the person/people who should fight death, and "burn and rave" (2) to indicate the fight. He uses examples of different types of men resisting death to add to his argument that life should not be given up lightly. "Wise men" (4) do not "go gentle" because "their words had forked no lightning" (5). Another metaphor, meaning that the words they speak receive no notice, therefor there is still more recognition to achieve before death's finality. "Good men" (7), realizing (with the metaphor/personification) that their "frail deeds might have danced in a green bay" (8), also fight against dying. The use of "green bay" (8) as a metaphor for the inevitable "sea" of mortality shows that they realize their actions in life may not yet be enough to secure them an illustrious place in human history and remembrance. "Wild men"...

...Chelsi Howell John Mattern English 11 October 24, 2013 Compare and Contrast Essay Reading the two letters, there was many similarities and differences. The two letters are a like in many ways as to being different in many ways. The first letter was about Rev. Samson Occum and the second letter was about John Adams. The letter to reverend Samson Occum explained the freedom of slavery. It talked about respecting the African Americans because everyone should be treated equal. In the letter it stated that giving the justification of rights was like implanting a principle in gods’ life. God giving second chances to show that he cares about people no matte what because he understands how people make mistakes. The letter to John Adams was about love and religion just like the first letter. Each letter involved a strict religion. Even though the first letter talked about freedom and the second letter talked about power and liberty, it all comes from god and what they think god would like because god doesn’t like ugly. There were many different things about each letter. The letter to John Adams was saying how the woman had more right then the men. It’s hard to explain what was going on in the letter because it went straight to the point. Didn’t really break it down to the point where I could understand what happened. Basically it stated how the presidents didn’t care about the woman. The women were forced to take care of their kids, even though it’s their job already. Abigail...

...Ryan Staggemeier Kristy Tenbus ENGL 1020 September 17, 2011 Compare and Contrast Essay The professional golfers association contains many talented players throughout the world; two of the most known players are Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Growing up as a child I always was watching the golf channel with my father and the players he always told me to look out for on the top of the leaderboard were Tiger and Phil. Truth be told my father was right almost every tournament I saw at least one of those two players in the top ten. They both have green jackets from the masters and can both claim the title of the U.S open champion at one point. Although both PGA players Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are outstanding golfers with similarities and differences I believe that over all Phil Mickelson is a better player than Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods turned pro in the year of 1996 and has shocked the world ever since either with the breaking news of his devastating actions or about how he birdied the 18th hole to go into another 18 hole playoff with Rocco Mediate in the U.S open. Over the past few years Tiger has slipped and has made mistakes which resulted in him losing respect of his fans and of his golfing equals. Tiger the man isn’t really someone you really want to look up to but Tiger the golfer shows many ways to be respectful and how to treat people on the golf course. I myself have taken the way Tiger Woods plays into perspective with my own game. He taught me to play with...

...Sister Flowers vs. Fish Cheeks Lakisha M. Couch English 121: Composition I January, 10 2014 Instructor: Brad Trolly The story of Sister Flowers by Maya Angelou and Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan gives us two different examples of how two young ladies manage to overcome embarrassment and cultural differences. Although both have labeled their situation as “embarrassing”, it is clear that both situations are coming from two different aspects. The story Sisters Flowers depicts educational differences, whereas Fish Cheeks describes a young lady facing the embarrassment of pride and cultural differences. According to our text book, the idea of descriptive writing is the kind of writing that describes person, place or thing in such a way that is forms a picture in the readers head. In order for one to capture such an event one would have to pay close attention to each detail by using their five senses. As I read the story of Sister Flowers, I felt as though this story definitely follows the guidelines of a good descriptive story. For example: Sisters Flower by Maya Angelou discloses a revelation of an important mentor in the life of Marguerite. The character, Sister Flowers, is painted as an individual who was kind, respectful, educated, and inspirational. She was an aristocratic and highly cultivated person who had the ability to reach out and bring forth a positive impact on the lives of those that resided in her community. Marguerite was a young girl who was trapped in her...
