Comparing Alexie's The Joy Of Reading And Writing

Learning to read and write is something everybody learns at young age in school. Literacy is something that takes effort and thought to develop a decent understanding of skills and materials. The process of learning how to read and write is shown by three authors shows different experiences they faced while going through the process of literacy. Alexie’s “The Joy of Reading and Writing”, Douglass “Learning to Read and Write” and Malcolm X’s “Learning to Read” have very different learning experience in learning to read and write. All the authors described the oppression certain they have when they learned something new. In Alexie case, it is different. Alexie is an Indian, and Indians are expected to step aside from education. Alexie was just there fill up seat, but he decided not to follow those steps to follow his goals. Alexie first started to learn read and write from his father. His father loved reading books, he read whatever he can find to read. This caught Alexie attention and he figured out that it is not easy for him to learn read and write. “A smart Indian is a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike.” (Pg.) Next, Alexie had to fight for his education because all the teachers were non-Indians and so that’s why Indians have to act dumb in front of them. Alexie decided to fight through all these rules and survive to teach himself how to read and write. Soon, he started reading whatever he found during his lunch, recess breaks, and all other free time he had. This shows how dedicated he was to learn read and write. His dedication also shows us that all the pressures around him didn’t stop him from learning to read and write to achieve his goals. Now, he helps Indians the benefits of reading and
