The main attribute of the movie that is criticized is that its story is inaccurate. This is true, there are a few scenes presented by the movie that are just incorrect compared to the book's story. For example, the first half of the movie showed Hester and Mr. Dimmesdale developing a deep intimate relationship. The couple could not hold back their temptation to love for seven years. For seven years was how long they must wait to safely marry and display their affection in public. Hester eventually gave birth to a baby and she was put under arrest for not speaking the father's name and for adultery. In the book, Hester is first in prison for unknown reasons and is later put to the scaffold with her baby and garment which also all have unknown reasoning at that point in …show more content…
In the movie Dimmesdale was trusted to give religious aid to Hester and to baptize her baby while she was under arrest for her crime. Reversely, Roger Chillingworth arrived to give medical aid to Hester in the book and told her of his plan to seek revenge against whoever impregnated her. The movie also didn't present any emphasis to Pearl's character at all; she is just there as Hester's child, unlike the book. Roger's story in the movie is much more predictable than his mysterious persona in the book. At some point in the movie Roger kills a man who left Hester's house, who he expected to be her lover but turn out to not be the man he was seeking. He then proceeded to scalped the man's head to make the murderer appear as a native. Due to his disguise of being an intelligent doctor, he convinced the governors of the colony to eradicate the possible witches which were to be the cause of sin in the colony. The sin which the governors thought to be Hester and the recent murder by the natives. Roger later convinces the colony that Pearl is a witch. The movie displays Roger as a villain of destruction rather than a husband trying to seek
