If a student has straight A’s in class, it is suggested that they are responsible. In some cases the student may just procrastinate, but they would never admit to it and there is more to that person than what is in their academic record. Désirée’s Baby by Kate Chopin and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson provide evidence for the explicit and implicit viewpoints of looking beneath the surface of a person, a culture, or a society.
The question explicitly states it is important to look at what happens beneath the surface of a person. This point can be supported by Chopin’s story in Desiree’s Baby Armand’s love was described “Monsieur Valmondé grew practical and wanted things well considered that is, the girls obscure origin. In Désirée’s Baby the character is known to be strict but later he would be more relaxed with his slaves. “Marriage, and later the birth of his son had softened Armand Aubigny’s imperious and exacting nature greatly.”(Chopin 2). Armand was in a positive mood believing that his child is white but he would later be more negative towards his slaves. This would happen after his own child was getting darker. Armand was the person that said to his dad that he did not care about his wife’s origin, but is now getting disturbed by his child getting darker. He then concludes that his wife is not white and his wife would leave because of him using his rage on her like he does with his slaves. Armand’s personality at the end of the story was more strict and controlling than before having a child and the character has prejudice against people with slave origin even though when he got married he said it did not matter. The Lottery shows that there is meaning behind the black box which is part of their culture “Used to be a saying about ‘lottery in June, corn be heavy soon” (Jackson 4). The villagers have a culture where the black box is used to stone someone so that there will be a successful harvest that year. The people in the village also have a more traditional mindset than the villages around them that no longer do the lottery shows that they still believe in the
