Analysis of Health Management Systems and Electronic Health Records
Epic
Patients benefit in many ways from Epic. First, patient safety is enhanced with computerized physician-order entry. Epic has clinical decision support built in that alerts physicians during the ordering process. For example, if a patient is allergic to penicillin and the physician places an order for a drug containing penicillin, an alert will pop up to warn the physician the patient is allergic to the drug. Physician orders are legible and immediately available to the pharmacy, lab, and caregivers. Patients have fewer delays in getting medication or tests because orders are transmitted directly to all areas. There are many safety checks in the medication administration process using bar-code medication administration. All medications have a bar code on them, as do patient armbands. Before giving a medication, the nurse will scan the drug and the patient’s armband. The Epic system will check to make sure that medication is ordered for that patient, and if not, a warning pops up to say the medication is not ordered. Comprehensive discharge instructions called the “after-visit summary” are created throughout the patient’s stay from documentation from all providers. The summary contains information about follow-up appointments and specific information about home medications. A physician can access a patient’s medical record from any computer connected to the Internet to have complete information available when answering nurses’ phone calls about changes in patient condition. Medication errors and adverse drug reactions will be avoided by the drug-interaction alerts built into the Epic system. Clinical-decision support and alerts built into the Epic system will help ensure the correct medications are ordered and administered. Documentation of allergies will be

...Lesson Plan: Electronic Medical Charting NUR/588 May 19, 2014 Bianca Needham Professor Gail Wolf Identification of the educational need and rationale: The implementation of electronic documentation for medical records, medications, and nursing flow sheets has replaced the existing paper documentation and is currently the educational need with the highest priority for the Emergency Department at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center. In a continuous care operation, it is critical to document each patient’s condition and history of care, to ensure the patient receives the best available care. The medical record documents the care of the patient and can immediately be accessed, updated, and passed among the interdisciplinary team of caregivers. The Emergency Department is the initial passageway to the hospital for most patients. Electronic documentation is a patient’s health information including medications, allergies, past and present illnesses, and family history can be gathered upon their initial presentation and up-to-the minute revisions can be made by the healthcare team throughout their hospital stay. The Electronic Medical Record/Charting can be designed to hold collaborative information from all providers that are involved in the patients’ care. With each subsequent visit thereafter, the patient’s demographic, insurance, and health history database will automatically pre-fill the electronic template alleviating nurses of time restraints...

History and Development of the Digital Computer

...History and Development of the Digital Computer Prior to the advent of digital computing, human clerks who calculated in accordance with effective methods we referred to as “computers.” Human computing has evolved greatly since that time; giving the need for computing and the advancement of technology an entirely new growth opportunity. A digital computer is “a device that processes numerical information; more generally, any device that manipulates symbolic information according to specified computational processes” (Digital Computer). Each computer is programmed with a basic set of instructions that are the identifiers of what capability that system has to perform functions. Computers are devices used to carry out a myriad of logical operations, and most often consist of at least one processing element. A computer most often contains a memory bank for information storage. Though the idea of computing has been around for a long while, it wasn’t until the mid-1900’s that “computers” came alive. The dinosaurs of the mid-1900 were mammoth machines housed in large buildings and warehouses and consumed more energy for one operating system than hundreds of today’s mini machine’s do. Today’s computers are miniscule in size in comparison to that of their ancestors and have the capability of far more computing power. As technology has evolved, the computer has taken the shape of laptops, music players, gaming systems and automobiles; each of these tangible items relies on some sort...

...The computer is an electronic data processing machine. It works more or less like the human brain but brings forth results at a marvelous speed. It is the most recent contribution of technology that boosts productivity, reduces costs, and makes a gradual increase in our earnings. If we analyze our daily lives, most of our work is connected with computers, directly or indirectly. People interact with computers in fields such as education, healthcare and communication; however, healthcare is the area that has been most assisted by computer. Nearly every area of healthcare today uses computer and its related software. Computer, with its power to increase capability, accuracy, and availability of information, plays an important role in supporting and developing healthcare system. The medical field has been subjected to many difficulties. Improving the quality of healthcare was always an unanswered question (Stein 754). Computer, with its unbelievable ability to make developments, found an answer to that question. The present day fourth generation computers have started performing many fantastic and incredible functions in hospitals. It can be said that there is no medical procedure is done in which a computer cannot be used (Joseph 73). If a person is visiting a physician for an examination, having lab work or a test, or experiencing a surgery, the medical staff around him will use computers for various purposes. When people are offered with new innovations that require...

...and make sure the client knows what to take. By having a more up to date electronic medical record and charting system we can improve the client care within the home. Often the information that is needed, is back in the office or another nurse is caring for the client than normally would. In this paper, it is of importance that we resolve this problem. By having a more efficient electronic record, we can better care for our client’s when we are in the home. This will be helpful for our own clients and when helping out other nursing staff. CQI Research Paper Overview Improving quality healthcare services requires strengthening various elements of the services we provide for our clients. One of these is how we store and receive information about our clients (AlNotee, 2003). By using health informatics, we can do just that. Health informatics gives us the knowledge and the skills that we need to collect, manage and share information in the healthcare system as well as promote our clients health (AlNotee, 2003). We can use the continuous quality improvement (CQI) model to help us get what we need to improve client care. Introduction In the CQI process, we need to plan, do, study and act on whatever it is we are trying to improve (Statit, 2007). In this case, we are trying to improve our charting system. We need to involve less use of paper and more online charting. This will allow us to have all the pertinent information right at our fingertips each time we...

(Received 26 January 1983; received for publication l June 1984) Al~traet--The main characteristics of the most-used solution procedures for the facility layout problem are summarized. The characteristics include input required, limitations, type of output obtained, and some other general characteristics. Quantitative and computer-based models will sometimes produce odd layout shapes. For this reason, optimization models and computer programs designed to plan facility layouts, based on optimizing certain objectives, can be useful only for determining some guidelines for the planners. While these models can be used for planning alternative layouts, considerations of qualitative and personnel factors should be given during the layout finalization phase. INTRODUCTION One of the tasks in layout planning is assigning relative locations to a set of facilities. The best layout plan is often the one that results in the highest overall effectiveness of transactions between the facilities. Cost considerations can be a major factor in choosing a given alternative layout plan for implementation. The problem of facility layout...

Disaster Plan

...| Disaster plan | | | | 6/6/2010 | | Abstract This is a disaster plan that I created for the IST Department of XYZ Computers company in order to prevent any future problems that may arise such as the situation they had over the weekend when a major water pipe broke and flooded the first floor, causing extensive damage to the servers. Included in the disaster plan I will address a few issues that will aid the company in protecting against such things as any natural disasters that may occur as well as any other occurrences that may deem necessary for such a disaster plan. I will detail my recommendations for using a RAID system for data protection in order to have a well placed back up plan with the most up to date information possible. In short I plan to properly detail a disaster plan the best possible way that I can in order to have a good disaster recovery plan in place rather than having to spend the time and money on extra recovery efforts. Hopefully having such a plan in place will keep from losing important data to unforeseen issues, such as natural disasters due to the geographical location among other issues that may arise at the most in opportune time possible. When creating a disaster plan the first thing to keep in mind is to do a complete risk assessment of the entire existing computer systems. In order to accomplish this task all the risks and probabilities will need to be noted such as any delays to system uptime and how close at hand these...

A user will be taking a huge risk to use the bleeding technology which would be more expensive than the leading technology. Bleeding edge technology could be very costly and it could turn into something that could be the beginning of a serious problem. The reason why bleeding edge technology could cause many problems is because it is new and might be quite risky because of the instability. Bleeding edge technology has not been thoroughly tested and has not proven itself to be reliable. As an example of bleeding technology would be an early development of a new computer product that is being develop for the very first time. Computer as a Catalyst for Change

...1 Teachers’ Views of Computers as Catalysts for Changes in Their Teaching Practice Sara L. Dexter and Ronald E. Anderson University of Minnesota Henry Jay Becker University of California, Irvine This paper was published in the Journal of Research on Computing in Education. The citation for it is: Dexter, S., Anderson, R. E., & Becker, H. J. (1999). Teachers’ views of computers as catalysts for changes in their teaching practice. Journal of Research on Computing in Education, 31 (3), 221239. Abstract: In this study we examined the use of computers by teachers in their instructional practices and their perception of the impact of computers on changes they have made to their classroom practice. These data draw from 47 teachers from 20 K-12 schools across 3 states who each completed a questionnaire, participated in 3 semi-structured interviews, and allowed 3 observations of their classroom. The teachers who had adopted more progressive teaching practices over time felt computers helped them change but they did not acknowledge computers as the catalyst for change. Instead, they cited catalysts that included: reflection upon experience, classes taken, and the context or culture of the school. We conclude that in order for teachers to implement the use of educational technology in a constructivist manner, they must have opportunities to construct pedagogical knowledge in a supportive climate.
