COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEM BRIEF-KUDLER FINE FOODS

Kudler Fine Foods expresses on their website that they “will go to extensive lengths to assure that Kudler Fine Foods is the purveyor of choice for customers aspiring to purchase the finest epicurean delights”. This information lets our company know that we are working with a company that is ready and able to take that next step into the 21st century when it comes to technology and accomplishing any business goals. Kudler Fine Foods, as our client, has asked how computer systems might be more effectively integrated to meet their business needs and improve their accounting operations. In the following brief, our company will attempt to give suggestions on making Kudler Fine Food’s information system more successful for their business and accounting operations.
IDENTIFYING BUISNESS AND ACCOUNTING NEEDS
Kudler Fine Foods seems to have the internet site set up very well. It allows the customers to see what the company has to offer as well as give them important contact information on where the product is sold, and how to get it. One need as far as the customer’s base is concerned is maybe reaching out to more paying customers. Kudler Fine Foods are searchable through the world wide net and that also means that they can receive profits from all parts of the world. As far as addressing business needs, an internet site where products can be purchased would be greatly beneficial.
When it comes to the Kudler’s intranet, there is too much information provided on how the financial side of the business is handled as well as too much private information being easily assessable from the intranet site. There needs to be decision made on what financial information is allowed to be given and all other information needs to be created and maintained by an accounting system designated for only this information. Although it is good to allow your employees and the public to be knowledgeable of Kudler’s financial situation, there should be a line drawn on what should be publicly viewed and what should not.
STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF CURRENT COMPUTER SYSTEM
According to Foundations of Information Systems in Business, there are three primary reasons for all business to pursue information technology in order to run a successful operation. The three goals of information systems within a business are:
• Support business processes and operations.
• Support decision making by its employees and managers.
• Support strategies for competitive advantage.
A business having these three goals in mind when preparing or deciding on an information system can ensure the system being beneficial to their business. Evaluating the current computer system of Kudler Fine Foods brings forth a few strengths and weaknesses. One strength I do find when looking through the intranet area of Kudler’s site is the three goals of information systems mentioned above are met. There is enough information provided to support the business process and operations, decision making by employees and managers and support of strategies for a competitive advantage. This same information also can be a weakness to a certain extent for Kudler Fine Foods. I find that too much information is provided and although all the information provided is beneficial and needs to be addressed, maybe creating something internal and allow only certain team members to view may be more beneficial. Not all team members need access to the financial information of the company. This would the first order of business, to distinguish what areas each employee needs to have access to.
OPPORTUNITIES IN TECHNOLOGY
Kudler Fine Foods is a specialty food store located in the California area but can expand its operations worldwide if they take the opportunity to expand on the technology available to them. The internet is a form of technology that can help any company bring in much more profits than ever imagined. The internet allows any company to reach a client or customer base from all parts of the world. Kudler Fine Foods can improve their ability to maximize profits by setting up a software system that can allow them to take orders directly from the site. This software system needs to be accessible to international purchasing transactions as well.
THREATS ENCOUNTERD FROM CURRENT SYSTEM
As mentioned earlier, one concern we have with the intranet of Kudler Fine Foods is too much personal and financial information being accessible by all employees of the company. This concern is what is called Cyber security. There are hackers and even some employees who might aim at learning a company’s financial functions in order to obtain its earnings report before it is publicly released. Having this advance knowledge, can help whomever profit by acquiring or dumping stock. We feel that in this case, Kudler Fine Foods is providing this information openly and willingly at all times and it can prove to be detrimental for the company in the long run.
When it comes to employee data, this information is considered private and confidential. Although human resources has a section on the intranet, it needs to be limited to only information. All employee personal data and the companies private data needs to also be maintained within a separate system or separate section of information software only viewable by the designated departments.
In conclusion, Kudler Fine Foods is a great company with great potential. The great potential can be reached by allowing today’s technology to boost sales and profits for Kudlers’. There are many software and hardware systems available today that can help any company maximize profits if used correctly. The internet is a way to reach a magnitude of individuals interested in the products Kudler’s offer. The key factor in this equation would be to reach these customers and allow the purchasing experience to be as easy and painless as possible. There also needs to be a line drawn on what should and should not be considered public information when it comes to a company’s financials. There definitely needs to be a line drawn there and only provide what is considered public information on the site. There should be separate software designated just for a company’s financials. All of this information mentioned above is a great start to helping Kudler Fine Foods become the top virtual company in the food sector today.
