Virtual Reality or Virtual Renegade?
According to Merriam – Webster online, democracy is defined by “a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b : a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections, c. : the common people especially when constituting the source of political authority” (Merriam – Webster, 2013). In each of these definitions, the reader may see that they all include ruling by the “people”, which reveals that the catch phrase “for the people, by the people” sums up almost entirely the notion of democracy. However; what is created when this constitute no longer applies? What happens when people no longer control their own natural reactions, but instead are controlled by computers and/or technology? To throw another bone in, it is silly to believe that everyone on Earth will be controlled by technology. In order for the world to survive, there would have to be someone monitoring technology; who else but government, an entity who is already in control of society. With the recent invasions of human privacy such as tapping phone lines and censoring the Internet, I argue that virtual reality is another allure transposed by Government to keep society under their control and power.
Wiretapping and/or electronic eavesdropping involves the interception of phone calls or any other electronic transmittal, usually without consent. In growing up, we are told that in order to do with other’s belongings or possessions, we must first gain their consent; without their consent, we do not have the right to touch, to mess, or to deal with their things. In the same sense, why is it justifiable that government is allowed to wiretap without consent? If all are not allowed, why exclude one? Are we not all created equal and exercise the same rights? In our society, we are told no. Although we are a democratic society, it seems as if at times, depending on varying circumstances, government is permitted to go against the law. Additionally, although we as a people have not consented for government to censor our Internet, they still have done so. Located on Huffingtonpost.com is a chart listing all the sites government has asked Google to censor and one of the top reasons being? Defamation:

Takedown Requests In The U.S.
Interesting enough, defamation is the leading reason why Government has asked Google to censor certain sites. The problem that permits is if Government was or is not who or what these “defamers” claim them to be, then why would they feel the need to censor it? To put the light at the other end of the spectrum, if Government were as great and/or was for the people as they claim, then no amount of slander could steer the American people to view the Government in a negative light. Wiretapping and Internet censorship, although not fully determined legal, still occurs in the shadows, as we humans are caught up in the allure of technology and its new advancements. There was a time when the only mobile devices people had were beepers, however; technology has advanced in the most exponential manner that we currently have smart phones. Smart phones allow us to not only talk and text on the phone, but also various other duties that a computer would such as check emails, send documents, browse the Internet, and find locations. With the allure of smart phones comes the catch of now transmitting personal and confidential information into our phones, allowing unwanted users or hackers to view our data without our consent. In addition, there was a time when the typewriter was the only machine used for data entry, but in present day, we have laptops, desktop computers, and also netbooks. With these fancy gadgets, Web 2.0 had also been created. In our text, we read that “Web 1.0 was the ability to perform read-only but with the creation of Web 2.0, we are able to read and write” (Bowles, 2010). This notion is shown on our social networks as we post statuses of how we feel or where we are going, or what we are doing. Little do we know, that with every pro comes a con. By inputting our information on such sites as Facebook, Twitter, or Blogger, we subject ourselves to a lifetime of invasion of privacy. No matter how many letters or words we type, edit or delete on these sites, they are stamped in the World Wide Web indefinitely. Lastly, with the allure of virtual reality and being able to “plug in and experience what it’s like to be someone else” (Kurzweil, 2005), we set ourselves up for yet another trap. In watching Kurzweil’s video, “The Acceleration of Technology or How Technology will Transform Us”, we see just in this title, the personification of technology being in control and in actuality, changing us humans. The irony is that humans are the ones who have created technology. On another note, we learn while viewing that technology is not advancing linearly, but exponentially which explains how in 2013, we are able to have smartphones where just in 2000, phones were really just created. With the way technology is advancing, it is safe to conclude that soon our world will be controlled by computers instead of humans; the ones who were originally intended to roam the Earth. In watching Ray Kurzweil’s video, he also mentioned that “someday in the near future, computers will become so small, they will disappear, embedding themselves in our clothing and in our environment, moving to our retinas, and providing full immersion virtual reality” (Kurzweil, 2006). Computers themselves will transport themselves, which means ignoring our natural emotions, doing as they sense, and creating virtual worlds for humans without consent. To further explain “virtual reality”, the purpose of the virtual reality or virtual entertainment system is “to sense, manipulate, and transform the state of the human operator” (Durlach, 1995). If democracy is a statute put in place to ensure that laws are made “for the people, by the people”, how will this ordinance be embraced if humans are being “manipulated” by devices that they have no control of? Furthermore, how will the ordinance be embraced by humans who are being controlled by devices that are capable of malfunctioning or are not fully configuring the exact composition of the “real world”? In reading the article “10 Scientific Problems in Virtual Reality” by Zhao Qinping, he noted several issues that should be considered when producing virtual reality. He states, “Modeling real world objects requires knowing the physical forces shaping the world and the perception shaping human behavior” (Qinping, 2011). The question is how is virtual reality able to capture these crucial elements? In reading Qinping’s article further, he mentioned that “Virtual Reality is characterized by notable technology and engineering problems, as well as by problems involving computability and the physical behavior of real-world objects” (Qinping, 2011). The matter at hand is that humans will not only be controlled, but controlled by artificial creations of what is actual reality. As to not be biased, there are many pros to adopting virtual reality into our everyday lives. “Scientists have established a robot made out of molecules with the capability of going inside the human body and performing diagnostic functions. In addition, a nano-engineered device has been developed where it cures type 1 diabetes. The greatest aspect of all is if we were to replace the human blood cells with that of the robotic ones, we would be able to do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath or be able to sit at the bottom of a pool for four hours” (Kurzweil, 2006). Based upon these characteristics, it would seem as if life as a human under these circumstances would be ideal. Frankly, with the addition of these nano- engineered devices which also yield us the capability of being in virtual reality, they subtract what it is to be a human and turn us more so into robots. It was not meant for us to perform an Olympic sprint in such a manner or hold our breaths for that long, less we would be born that way. Alteration of the human form has always been a controversial matter as we are told to love ourselves for who we are, yet we are pounded by exercise commercials, or allures of cosmetic surgery, topped with hair growth, male enhancement pills, and many other advertisements advising us to change ourselves. Virtual reality and the development of nano bots is just like these advertisements. In conclusion, due to the recent incidents of wiretapping and attempts to censor the Internet, virtual reality and the emergence of other technological advances are implied to be government proposed tactics to control humans. These days humans are much more knowledgeable, they are not afraid to speak their opinion nor fight for what they believe in. Acts like these are considered as threats to government like entities whose duties pertain keeping out chaos in society. Acts such as tapping phone lines, censoring the Internet, and the recent discovery of virtual reality are results of a bait and hook motive. Smart phones emerge with the allure of being able to use the Internet while texting and paying bills on a mobile device, whilst we forget that all our personal and confidential information we input into our phones are being transmitted into an array of electronic systems. Social networks are developed where humans are able to freely express ourselves, sharing our thoughts and opinions on pretty much anything we deem, yet we must share information discreetly as to not incriminate ourselves to government, our employers, our families, and sometimes even our friends. Lastly, we are told that with virtual reality, we will be able to alter our perceptions and feel what it is like to be someone else, not realizing that we are giving control to a technological device to transpose our natural and innate human emotions into emotions and feelings that a computer “senses” from us. This is not a paper to bash government or any of the like, but is a paper to be mindful of our surroundings and the changes that our taking place here in our very own environment. The word Renegade connotes many negative definitions, however; the one deemed most necessary for the context is “to break with established customs” (Merriam-Webster Online, 2003). Based on this definition in addition to our well advancement in technology, it is safe to say that this emergence of virtual reality is instead a virtual renegade.

Computer Literacy and Numeracy

...Computer Literacy and Numeracy Module Photoshop Exercise Image 1: [pic] This graphic (Image 1) displays how the citizens of Urbania are attempting to pass their garbage problems onto other smaller municipalities. Specifically, this image shows a citizen of Urbania sweeping his garbage “under the rug” of the rural towns in a very care free manner. The citizen himself is extremely large compared to the rural areas; this symbolizes the helplessness of the smaller rural towns to stop the big city. This graphic was created using a combination of several borrowed images and free-hand computer drawn pictures. I borrowed the image of the man from a website on the internet. He was originally black and white, using both arms to sweep and facing the opposite direction (See Image 2). Image 2: [pic] Using Paint Shop Pro I erased the litter and one of his arms. I then selected and copied his remaining arm, pasted it and rotated it into the upward position. I then coloured the image and horizontally mirrored it. Next I hand drew the hills of Ruralia, the trees and the houses. I further created the cities sign and rotated the text “RURALIA” to match the angle of the sign. I then found a picture of the Dallas, Texas skyline (Image 3), which was chosen for its lack of defining features, and opened it in Photoshop. Image 3: [pic] I used the crop tool to select the portion of the image I wanted to use and then used the artistic filter “Cutout” on the image...

...Computer Literacy Windows 8 vs. Windows 7 In this paper I will be comparing and contrasting Windows 8 and Windows 7. Windows 8 is latest Microsoft operating system that has been installed on all the new Windows computers since the year 2012. The main differences between Windows 8 and Windows 7 are: When you log in to Windows 8, the first screen you see is the new ‘Start Screen’, also known as ‘Metro’. It still has the familiar ‘Desktop’ as well but we’ll come to that in a minute. Instead of Icons, the new Start screen has ‘Tiles’. You click these to open your ‘Apps’ (short for Applications). If you can’t find a particular tile, do a right mouse click in the space at the bottom of the screen and click All Apps .In Windows 8 we can use apps and programs. Apps open full screen in Metro; programs open on the Desktop just as they did in Windows 7. Additional apps can be downloaded from the Windows Store. Windows 8 comes with an anti virus program called ‘Defender’. Apps don’t have to be closed by clicking a X in the corner – instead, just press the Windows key on your keyboard to return to the Start Screen.  Optionally, an app can be closed by dragging it down from the top of the screen with your mouse, with the left button held down – or with your finger if you are using a touchscreen. Windows 8 doesn’t have a Start Menu. Instead, it has a ‘Charms Bar’ (see right) which is where you go to shut down and use other tools such as ‘Search’. Whereas in Windows 7 you might have used...

It has nurtured some of the most ancient civilizations of this continent. The young country came into existence after a blood-spattered liberation war in 1971. But the pace of growth and development has been impeded by many factors. Bangladesh, as a Least Developing Country (LDC), faces a reputation challenge which is popularly known as its image problem. Bangladesh has gained the image of a country with too many people, too much poverty, too little resources, too frequent disasters and too little ability to change for better. Recently poor law and order, bad investment climate and Islamic terrorism have killed its image more. The Necklace vs. the Story of an Hour

...INTRODUCTION Computer Literacy Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use a computer and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to programming and problem solving. Computer literacy can also refer to the comfort someone has with using the computer and other applications that are associated with the computer. Arthur Luehrmann was one of the first to popularize the term computer literacy, when in 1972, he realized the important role that it would play in the educational environment ( Moursund, 2003). Computers are everywhere, our home, work, and schools. When I think about it my nieces know how to use them better than I do. With everyone having access to a computer these days, you can’t help but wonder if everyone is playing nice. Cyber Bullying is a serious issue in today‘s school and business I think this problem can be solved if people are educated on Netiquette, when cyber bulling happens it is important to document and report the behavior so it can be addressed. Something else we need to think about is making sure our online students are not ‘’flaming each other in a way that can cause damage. Flaming, this is a term that describes an increasingly intense and vicious debates. One way to handle this problem is for instructors to monitor classroom discussion board, and if it appears that a discussion is headed in that direction, simply stop it. Socially we love the computer to chat...

The Change in Literacy

...Jake Andryshak Jerry Tartaglia English 101 November 12, 2013 The Decline in Literacy The decline of literacy has been something that has changed over time. Words used in the past may not show up in today’s vocabulary. Historical events will impact the writings and the verbal words during that time. Literacy will change according to time eras and with what is going on during that time. Through history the way people spoke to one another and the way they wrote has changed. During the civil war era, people wrote differently. They used a different assortment of words. People back then had a diverse vocabulary that people today do not use. The language and literacy has been molded as each decade past. Events in history have impacted the way people speak and write to one another. During the 50s America was coming off of the Great Depression. Times were pretty great, it seemed like there was an abundance of money. People were living the American Dream. This was the era of the movie “Grease”, with John Travolta. People had their clicks like they do today but each click resembled a gang. People had different words that meant the same thing, for example the word ‘chick’ was used in place of girl. The word ‘bread’ is not the eatable cooked wheat, it actually meant money in the 1950s. In the 1960s, during the decade of the hippies, the meanings of some words changed. When someone said ‘that’s boss’, it meant something that was the best of or something that was great. During the...

...ADULT LITERACY EDUCATION IN NIGERIA AND THE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1. The need for adult literacy education in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized. In the context of global economy and competitive markets, adult literacy is a key factor contributing to economic development. In all countries of the world, adults constitute a larger proportion of the work force. Therefore, human resource development through adult literacy education has become a key component within the overall strategy for economic restructuring both in the developed and developing countries. The future of global economy and democratic polity in the twenty-first century is likely to depend on skilled, educated, and enlightened adult citizens. It was the World Conference on Education for All, held in Jomtien, (Thailand) in 1990 that highlighted the critical importance of addressing the learning needs of adults. In the context of globalization, basic learning skills and competencies are necessary not only for children, but also for adults, who are valuable human resources of every society. The new technological developments in information and Communication technologies (ICTs), such as satellite radio and television broadcasting, long distance telephony, computers and telecommunications have dramatically expanded our options for engaging in learning and teaching at the individual, community and societal levels. The hallmark of ICTs is their distributive power and...

...globally-competitive and productive citizens. To achieve this, one of the best ways to build a strong foundation of technological literacy is to implement the use of digital media in schools to assist the teaching-and-learning process. Technology in classroom serves as a great partner of teachers to deliver a complete package of standard teaching. Learning process equipped with various visual media incorporated in lessons are much likely to awaken the learners’ interests to get involved than that of dominated by traditional way of teaching in which the center of information source are the teachers themselves. Gone were the days where Filipino children read passages from the back of used calendars. Teachers are also challenged at the same time that since one of the goals is to produce learners who will be able to respond to the current demands of the market, they must be very careful in using technology in teaching and bring out the best of it and ensure that this technique will heighten the learners’ skills and abilities. Moreover, technology in classroom is as much helpful to learners. With this, the first graders in school become oriented at their young age of different forms in technology which include computers and visual media. As K-12 learners, it will also be a requirement for them since the workforce nowadays demands for an individual to be literate in computers and other technological tools for them to pass the standards of employers. By introducing more technology in schools...

Anyways, I was cool as a cucumber, because this time I had decided that it would not be the Season Three of some failed daily soap. I had made all fool-proof arrangements to pass this time. My dedication, patience, perseverance and persistence would definitely see me through my exams this time around. Day in and day out, I had sacrificed all my useless activities that kept me unduly busy; computer games, movies, parties, discos.. everything! I gave up everything as soon as the exam time table was announced. All my energy and efforts were now aimed at one single objective: getting the question paper somehow!! Patience is always rewarded, so are genuine efforts and dedication. I was lucky enough to discover a gem of a person in one of my class-mates, whom I revered as my senior, coz he had failed thrice in the same exam. He would have made one hell of a statesman beating even Dr. Kissinger I must say. Sihite’s Family Literacy Practices

...the sustainable literacy mastery of one generation to the next generation. Literacy is really needed to speed up the development or the progress of a country especially in this era of globalization in which technology advance and rapid economic development requires everyone to be competent and to have good skills. Everyone should be literate and be able to read or write at least. In line of this, Hussain (2005) said: “Access to quality literacy learning opportunities and the development of literate environments are essential components of strategies for poverty reduction, equality, economic development and environmental protection, and for achieving democracy. Literacy is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite to the empowerment of the individual and development of society”. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an instrument of empowerment to improve one’s health, one’s income, and one’s relationship with the world. Literacy education is one of important aspects which should be applied in order to foster an interest and latent talent in order to get that empowerment of the individual and development of society. Through informal or formal education at school, students especially can know how to read and write well. When they know how to read, they are expected to possess good knowledge by reading books or many other medias such as internet. Literacy is not obtained...

...Why is Visual Literacy Important? Traci Sizemore CGD 218 Visual Literacy in Business Stephen Simmons September 3, 2012 Why is Visual Literacy so Important? The ability to understand visual literacy you must be able to see your world, but is it the ability to just see things around you the clear definition of visual literacy? Of course not, it is much more than just being able to see. We will review the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) definition versus the information provided in a video “TedTalk” by Brian Kennedy, director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, how visual literacy is a universal language and finally how it impacts communication and global understanding. The International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) definition of what visual literacy is A group of vision-related competencies a human being can develop by seeing, and at the same time, having and integrating other sensory experiences. [These competencies] enable a visually literate person to discriminate and interpret the visible actions, objects, and symbols that he [or she] encounters . . . to communicate with others . . . and comprehend and enjoy visual communication. (International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA, n.d.) (Ryan, 2012). This definition is stating that one should see the object but be able to critically think about the object. By critically thinking about the object we can view the object; understand and interpret it. When we...

...schools need to experiment with different literacy programs that will improve reading skills and fluency. Using technology-based literacy (E-Books) can increase student’s reading skills and fluency because technology is interactive, includes visual and audio effects, which can help students, stay focused while reading. My research topic is based on literacy in the classroom and how well children interpret reading with technology. The classroom consist thirty-three children of different race and background. Teachers will have classrooms set up with smart boards and iPads so each child will get individual learning. The location of the school is located in Bronx New York. The National Reading Report has been showing a high percentage of below basic reading scores on the fourth grade-reading test in New York City Public Schools. The City can try implementing new literacy programs to help increase student-reading scores. Upgrading literacy technology is one way schools can attempt to increase the literacy scores of the student population. Electronic books are one type of literacy technology that schools use to improve technological literacy in the classroom. These books have a variety of video animation, sound and voice effects, which hold student’s attention. One major problem in for the schools is that technology is expensive and most teachers do not have adequate technology training, which means many schools are not using computers in their classrooms.
