In recent years America has been haunted by reality of horrendous school shootings such as what occurred at Virginia Tech in 2007. With this ugly reality some people are advocating for permission of concealed weapons on campus. Firearms can be used as a good form of defense against a formidable threat but would the carrying of concealed weapons on campus really make the campus safer? What if the law stated that only permitted faculty were allowed to carry weapons on campus? Some feel it’s strictly a matter of self-defense while others feel that there is no scenario where concealed weapons on campus could do anything more than create a more dangerous situation. Last year, to the dismay of some, Colorado Court of Appeals ruled that the University of Colorado’s gun ban violated the Concealed Carry Act of 2003. We as a whole must take into consideration the effects this has on students and faculty safety. In order to assure that the community within a campus feels safe we must have regulations on gun control. The data we are starting to put together involves Secondary data that we have begun to conduct. Secondary Data can be defined as “information that has previously been gathered by someone other than the researcher and/or for some other purpose than the research project at hand”. Our group has already conducted studies and began our own primary data, but having said that, Secondary data is key in proving that Redbox kiosks will be very popular to Kent’s student body. Internal secondary data by Redbox shows that they prefer to only put these kiosks on campuses with at least 15,000 students, says Liana Solis, who has personally attempted the movement of Kiosks on the campus. Obviously Kent State would be perfect for this with an estimated body of 28,000, which nearly doubles the prerequisite of students. Gathering Secondary data for the Redbox kiosks would have several advantages. After we send out our personally made survey, we will continue to use the resources already created and base what we do off that.
