The origin of the artifact
The Canudos war collection is a historical book written by Victor F Torres, This book explores the nature of Canudos war (1896-97), which was a major national conflict under the Brazil’s first republic. Canudos was the name of an abandoned cattle ranch in the remote state of Bahia.
The conflict that inspired the artifact
The artifact was inspired by the war of Canudos; this conflict was between the state of Brazil and the group of 30,000 settlers who had founded their own community in the state of Bahia and Canudos.( Jackson, 1990) The area had initially been quelled by numerous military expedition that all failed. After a series of unsuccessful military incursion, the area was brutally subdued by a large Brazilian army force that overran the village and almost killed all the inhabitants. (Jackson, 1990) This was classified as deadliest civil war in the history of Brazilian.
The message in the artifact about the conflict
According to this artifact, the government reason for wanting to wipe out the settlement was due to the rising influence of the Antonio Conselheiro, who was a messianic leader who had been preaching in Brazil since 1870s. (Torres, 1990) The pressure groups of bahian society spread the rumors that the region was an anti- republican community that was planning to secede and restore the monarchy. This made the Federal government to make the decision to destroy the region. ( Torres, 1990) The government responded with an ultimate force that ruthlessly killed all inhabitants, only 150 women and children survived the expedition.
An extract from the artifact
“Not a manly countenance among them, not an arm that was capable of supporting a weapon, not a single warrior.( Torres, 1990) Nothing but women, ghostlike old women, young girls old before their time, the young and old indistinguishable in their ugliness, their filth, and emaciation and children barely able to stand on their weak, bowed legs.( Torres, 1990) No end of children and the aged, few men among them, none but feeble-looking invalids, their swollen, deathlike faces the color of wax, their bodies bent double, swaying as they walked.”

Conflict Perspective

...The conflict perspective of education focuses on ways different social groups use education as a means of getting or keeping power, wealth, and prestige. The United States can very well be described as a society which places an overwhelming amount of importance on credentials, primarily on an array of educational qualifications. After World War II, degrees began being attained at a rapid pace. This included high school diplomas, bachelor’s and masters’ degrees, even doctorates. The question is why has this happened? The conflict perspective in contemporary sociology derives its inspiration from the work of Karl Marx, who saw the struggle between social classes as the “engine” of history and the main source of change. Conflict theorists assume...

Conflict Research Perspective

...Conflict Research Perspectives - Israel Israel and Palestine have been in a land war for years fighting over entitlement that neither really have. Both Palestine and Israel believe that the land that they both occupy belongs to them and will not stop until one side surrenders the rights to the land. The argument is over the Gaza Strip, Hamas, and the West Bank. Many different people with different religious beliefs once occupied Palestine who had at one time been occupied by Turkey. Over the years a large Jewish population had fled to Palestine and a group formed called the Zionist. This group believed that they had the right to the land because based on Biblical texts it was the Holy Land and only those who were descendants of the biblical Jewish faith should have rights to the land. “The Jewish claim Palestine is actually the site of the ancient land of Israel, which was, according to the Hebrew Bible promised to the Jewish by God.” (Ebscohostconnection) During World War I a letter was drafted stating that the British would support a Jewish national home. “During World War I, in 1916, it convinced Arab leaders to revolt against the Ottoman Empire (which was allied with Germany). In return, the British government would support the establishment of an independent Arab state in the region, including Palestine.” (Shah, 2006) After World War I Turkey lost control of the Palestine and the British now controlled it. The League of Nations ended up approving the letter that had...

Describe team members’ results on the Discovery Wheel and Develop your multiple intelligences exercises. What similarities and differences exist within the team? We are Team Charlie, and our team consists of Robert Row, Scott Roush, and Tag Krogseng. Robert was quite shocked at his results on The Discovery Wheel. He was deficient in communicating and taking tests. The rest of his results were within 2 or 3 points. What he found most intriguing was with his career, it is imperative to communicate. As he pondered this, he realized that he has not been communicating, but just giving direction. Listening is extremely important to the communication process. His second deficiency was taking tests. In the past he has done well on test, but not all tests. As he thought about his previous school experiences, he realized that tests did give him some trouble. Robert will need to work on the studying aspect to ensure that tests are completed with the desired result. Motivation, memory, and thinking were the three highest categories on Scott’s Discovery Wheel. With the motivation portion being the highest, it shows that Scott is ready to take on any task. While all the other traits are somewhat balanced with each other, as time goes on those traits may become stronger or weaker...

Senior Psychology Experiment Essay

...Psychology Experiment Essay It is inevitable to stop people from creating their own perspectives, but is it possible to change those perspectives or not? The issue that we deiced to study tries to answer the question: Do you believe only what you want to believe? My group and I realized that during this time, especially with the presidential debates, it was important to find an answer to this question. We wanted to prove whether people react to new information in a biased manner, when it conflicts with their previous beliefs. In other words, are all people programmed to be narrow minded? To look further into this topic, we developed an experiment that will try to prove that people are prejudice towards new information. We believe that if people read something that contradicts their original beliefs on a topic, then they will defend their position regardless of the factual information presented because people develop personal biases towards what they want to believe in. In order to prove that people believe only what they want to believe, we have devised a survey which forces people to react in their biased manner. We decided that in order to receive strong reactions from people we needed to choose a controversial topic. During the course of our experiment we will interview 60 people. Of the 60 people 30 of them will be given the article that states marijuana is not a gate way drug. The other 30 people will be given the article that states marijuana is a gate way drug. Of...

2.05 Assessment

...Hello Mr. President, I would just like to clarify that I understand the limits of our rights for safety purposes. Our individual rights are not absolute because there must be a balance of our rights with the public good to prevent chaos. Without these limits are society could do whatever they please and I am pretty sure that won’t turn out good since it would conflict with other peoples rights too. The people should be able to stop the government when we feel like the government is leading us to tyranny but the government should also take the time to find our actions reasonable. For example, if someone calls a false alarm of a fire in a public crowded building then yes they should be arrested even having the right of the 1st amendment because people can get hurt in the evacuation. If a person is speaking their opinion, even though you have a different perspective you should still respect and understand where their coming from. If government officials forced people to evacuate from their homes then they would be violating the peoples 4th amendment rights. People should be able to choose if it is necessary to evacuate the area their in. For example, if people feel it is unreasonable to evacuate because it does not affect their area then they should have the right to stay if they please. If the person is warned to evacuate but chooses to stay then by all means that is their choice and the government must respect how they choose to handle the situation since they are aware of...

Lecture Response

...discussion in which we defined war to be the violent declaration of conflict between two actors (state/non-state) made me think perhaps for the first time about the odd concept of what I consider to be acts of war or terrorism. Professor Cavarero’s lecture brought to my attention yet again the issue of what political philosophy and colloquial usage has come to define war/terrorism. It is undoubtedly true that over the past 100 years or so, the global violence scene has changed tremendously. Professor Cavarero has identified this decisive change as one moving away from the traditional definition of war (one that provokes images of allies/enemies, state vs. state sanctioned actions, etc.) and moving toward the less conventional description (provoking images of unitary violence toward innocent peoples in mass and at random). This first transformation or shift is one that is more commonly discussed and perhaps more easily understood. However, also involved in Professor Cavarero’s lecture was the shift that is required (and has not yet been achieved) in the observer’s perspective from being one entirely oriented around what she terms the “warriors point of view” to one that is more concerned with the point of view of those people struck in mass and at random who are helpless and vulnerable. She argues that the circumstances of these people and not those of the traditional wartime protagonist should orientate our perspective and terms this new orientation “horrorism.” The one explanation...

Separate Kingdoms

...Valerie Laken’s “Separate Kingdoms” is written using many visual strategies and different points of view in order to paint a better mental picture to her readers. She writes this short story in a way that is unique and in a form that is uncommon. Laken structures her story in a way that allows her to write it from two different perspectives, giving the reader a clearer understanding and a more in-depth look at the feelings of each of the characters. The two perspectives are in two different columns. Another unique strategy she uses in the story is combining the two perspectives. Each column is a different perspective, one being from the point of view of Colt and the other being his son, Jack. Another stylistic difference is that Laken keeps the sentence going across both columns in order to create the sense that both characters are experiencing an event in the same period of time. By using these different techniques, Laken is able to write a compelling story and really catch the attention of her readers. The main strategies of her book are used to not only catch the attention of the reader but to help the reader understand, in a deeper sense, what is going on, how the characters are feeling and how they relate to one another. One of these main strategies that is repeated throughout the story is that every action has a reaction. Colt never truly admits that he was the one that disabled the safety locks on the machine, but nonetheless, Colt still used the machine knowing that...

Reflected Best Self

...I am known for slow, contemplative communication in an era of knee-jerk reactions. Even amid the anxious urgency of modern communications, I have always reveled in the art of mutual agreement arrived at through reasoned discourse and through systematically developed thought processes. I am able to present a measured response in the face of everyday stressors as well as adversities that evoke strong emotional responses in others. I am successful at arriving at innovative solutions. This I achieve mainly by parsing and reframing problems and presenting challenges from a new perspective to those unable to view complexities the same way I do. I am able to analyze situations from the standpoints of risk, resources, and scale and see things from another person's point of view. My ability to frame and reframe also helps me tide over conflicts as I am able to recognize the backgrounds, the world views, and the capabilities that compel the behaviors and habits of the people I interact with. I am very open to new ideas, information, and experience. I am able to consider concepts that I am unfamiliar with regardless of where this leads me, be it the joy of discovering a new valid line of thought or the satisfaction of recognizing a worthless one. I appreciate the things that are fundamentally beautiful in this world; at the same time, I absorb and metabolize ideas that are not entirely pleasant. However, I have found the fine balance between unbridled skepticism and unquestioning openness...

India

...India was amazing. People were always willing to help us any way that they could. Whether it was the hotel employees, the bus crew, restaurant staff, bystanders on the street, or even those living in absolute poverty, the people of India were always smiling at us and wanting to know where we were from. Most people would think that they were always looking for a rupee or two, but that was not the case. They were genuinely glad that we were in their country and wanted to make sure that we had the best experience possible. It was inspiring and amazing and I think we could all learn of a lot from them. India was an eye-opening experience and it absolutely gave me an appreciation for how fortunate I am and it really put life into perspective. It made me realize what’s important and what I really value in life. There were times when I found myself frustrated, dirty, exhausted and ready to throw in the towel, but then I would turn a corner and spot something spectacular or come across a child with a smile on their face and I would remember how fortunate I was to experience such a unique place. India is a beautiful place filled with incredible people whose pride in their country is unwavering, and rightfully...

Changing Perspectives

...CHANGING PERSPECTIVES PSY/220 KATRENA TAYLOR 7/24/11 WRITTEN BY GARY ELLIOTT The scenario that is in the text is something that we see all too often out in society. We as people think that we should have control over what is going on around us at all times. The way we view something is what we have seen in the past, or have experienced ourselves. I have been guilty of this very thing; everyone has a different perspective on the same situations. People that have religion see things different than people that don’t. Most people just see the situation from their perspective on the outside and they don’t take the time to ask questions or try to see the other side. After reading the following scenario, I would say that the first analogy of the situation fits well. You see that sort of situation all the time, whether you are at the grocery store or at Wal-Mart. I actually witnessed a situation like this once at a store called Game stops. These kids were so bad that they were running around knocking over the displays, the mother was patiently waiting in line to purchase the games that she bought. One of the guys that worked there had to stop the kids from destroying the store, while the mother paid no mind to what was going on. Where I live there are a lot of homeless people constantly walking around and asking for anything mainly money. These are the same people that are telling you that their car broke down and the just need a little gas to get home. Most of these homeless...

Service

...The five characteristics for human service professionals are: Self-awareness, Ability to communicate, Empathy, Responsibility/commitment, and Flexibility. Self-awareness is the deep understanding of one's own self, this includes comprehending self-knowledge about beliefs, attitudes, values, stereotypes, biases, cultural and gender differences, and behaviors. Self-awareness is beneficial in diminishing preconceptions and opinions, allowing one to modify or change their "self" toward a client's perspective. Empathy is the ability to see or feel what the client has experienced. Similar to self-awareness, empathy furthers the progression of understanding oneself and enables a provider to put their feet into the client's shoes. Providers who have experienced as well as relate to the client's situation have an easier time expressing empathy. Responsibility/Commitment are ideal promises to a client. The provider shall support the client in whichever possible way is needed through responsibility and will offer the highest quality of service through commitment. A provider displays a strong presence of professionalism and acts to the best of their abilities. They will adhere to a code of ethic or conduct and will remain honest with their client throughout their service. Flexibility provides versatility to a provider’s service. They may need to change, abandon, or revise plans if the program suddenly becomes difficult or unusual. Flexibility allows a provider to learn new alternatives...

Inbev’s Buyout

...The article, This Bud May Be for the Belgians, discusses InBev’s buyout of Budweiser. Discuss the value of the brand from a consumer perspective. Some of you may not be beer drinkers, or drink any alcohol, but you are still a part of a culture where beer drinking is an identifiable lifestyle component, so you should be able to provide some perspective. Some things to consider are Budweiser’s targeted blue-collar market segment, its country of origin, and our nationalistic “pride of ownership.” Switch perspectives a bit, and consider how international consumers might value the quintessential American beer. Do you think that coming from the US enhances the value to overseas customers? Why or why not?  (Blenkinsop & Geller, 2014) In replying to other classmates, discuss the consumer perspective, thinking about your own exposure to Budweiser’s products and promotions. Include your thoughts on the value of any of the AB brands. Even though I am not a beer drinking but during socializing events majority of my friends and the people I have observed prefer international beer (i.e. Russian, German etc). During the initial stages of the InBev buyout of Budweiser the response was not that great Hence, the AB InBev buyout adopted to understand and address factors hindering Budweiser’s growth in the US as well as build or introduce the brand in other markets helped them achieve strong in-market performance globally. In addition, the brand is now successfully developing a universal...
