What is human nature for Confucius? What evidence does he give to show that his views about human nature are correct?

Confucius is known for stressing that human nature is intrinsically good. He stresses that humans being are born with the ability for differentiating between wrong and right and wrong. A person may not be aware from infancy which acts are tolerable and which acts are not, but all offspring feel shame, and once the children learn which deeds are bad or good, they have a normal tendency to consent of the former and criticize of the latter (Van and Bryan 27).

At times Confucius has been nicknamed the Socrates of the east because there are countless comparisons in their lessons. Both stressed the value of education and the function which it plays in the shaping the character of an individual. This shaping of personality may be viewed as the development of good feature upon the environment of human nature (Legge, James and Trans 47). This description essay will discuss the evidence that Confucius gives to ascertain that human nature are correct.

Confucius said that by personality, near together; by perform far apart. Human beings are born with comparatively the same faculties and needs. Apparently there are exemptions at either tremendous and of the continuum, but in common human beings are all very comparable at birth. Based upon the actions of human beings, the feedback that humans receive in reaction and change in their behavior in response to the feedback, they each begin to undertake a different pathway. This deed feedback change process shapes the experiences of humans, creating their unique personal lives (Van and Bryan 11). In the illustration above, Confucius reveals that what humans have in common by personality is their potential for development and their individual degrees of development are what distinguish human beings.
Confucius denied (although one disciple in any case appears to have had the conflicting impression) that he had any extraordinary stock of information; still less could he confess that such skills as he possessed was inspired or innate. What he considered as extraordinary in himself was his desire to learn and his indefatigable patience in persisting upon the ethical principles that had guided the superhuman rulers of the past. His mission, in the great schools, was not so much to pass on knowledge as to instill moral principles, form personality, hand down unchanged and integral a great practice of the past (Nivison and David 31)

In this illustration it is revealed that by character Confucius was just like any other human being; the only feature that distinguish him was his great desire for education. Even if he only dealt with nature in the one occasion, by groping more of the Analects human beings can explore deeper into the possibilities that nature offers them (Van and Bryan 22).

Confucius said that a noble man does not grieve that other individuals do not identify his merits. His only concern is for fear that he should fail to identify theirs. A noble man does not do something for the sake of extol, but for the reason that his education and experience has showed and guided him on the path to take. A noble man does, nonetheless, look to congratulate others for their excellent works so as to be an active part of the response procedure mentioned above. This reinforcement and recognition of virtue is a technique by which an individual can help to bring about these characters (Legge, James and Trans 21). Confucius said he who by reviving the old can obtain knowledge of the new is qualified to be a tutor. This illustration can be viewed as an explanation of Confucius’ relationship with learning. By cautiously assessment of the old ways via the recorded experience and thoughts of our ancestors, insight can be obtained that can be applied into our present situations. In his quest of education Confucius acquired much about ancient times and was proficient in using this information to demonstrate his points when teaching (Legge, James and Trans 81).

Confucius said shall i educate you what skill is? When an individual is aware a thing, to recognize that he or she is aware of it, and when he does not know a thing, to identify that he does not recognize it that is knowledge. This illustration illustrates Confucius’ skepticism and empiricism. The teachings of Confucius were not based on faith, but completely upon evidence. In instances where he had no evidence he desisted from speaking and teaching on the subject or coming up with any conclusion. He also indicated that information that is acquired and not used is useless. Lessons obtained must be applied so as to actualize their true worth (Legge, James and Trans 90).

Confucius tells people to hear a lot, but maintains calm as regards uncertain points and should be careful in talking of the rest; and by doing this they will rarely get into trouble. See a lot, but overlook what is unsafe to see, and be careful in acting upon the rest; by doing this you will rarely want to reverse your deeds. He or she who rarely gets into problem regarding what he or she has said and rarely does something that he or she afterwards desires he or she had not done, will be certain to get his reward. In this illustration Confucius clarifies the way that all incidents may be education. By seeing and hearing much, much will be gained. The warning cited here is the consideration upon these incidents and their right application. The prize here is the practice of a noble life instead of a material prize (Legge, James and Trans 49).

Confucius said that he has never seen an individual who truly was concerned about goodness, or one who actually detested wickedness. A person who truly concerned about goodness would by no means let any other contemplation come first. A person who detested wickedness would always be doing good that evil would in no way have an opportunity to get at him or her. Has any person ever succeeded to do good even for a day? I believe not. Yet i have never seen any person try to do well as he or she did not have the strength to do so. This may have ever taken place but i have never witnessed it (Nivison and David 59)

In the illustration above Confucius emphasizes that human nature is correct. A human being has the capability for both wickedness and goodness, but maybe not the capability for faultlessness of the form of righteousness. Confucius indicates this is not because of innate need of strength and appears to point to a lack of devotion. If a human being was truly devoted to pursue goodness there could be no opportunity to engage in wickedness (Nivison and David 44).

Confucius believed that education encourages ethical behavior. By a person learning the experience of others he discovers how comparable he is to other people. Appropriate application of this information leads human beings to treat others as they would like themselves to be treated (Nivison and David 41)

Confucius said a human being takes as much problem to find out what is correct as lesser human being take to find out what will pay. A man pursues knowledge as an end and a means while the common person sees knowledge simply as a means towards security and wealth (Nivison and David 77).

The above illustration would be meaningless and pointless if human nature was not correct and if these illustrations were not leaning toward goodness. For Confucius the uppermost political supreme was the customary theocracy which requisite that the most righteous be the leader because good feature was understood to be similar to human nature.
